Maker challenge?

Same - I can't do the weekend get-together. Too many things going on this year already.

I wouldn't mind doing a get together when the knives are done, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Has a timeframe been determined? I'm still waiting for my steel order.

I do not think an actual time frame has been been, but I did suggest early spring. I was thinking end of March or first of April.
Does anybody have any ideas about where we could organize the get together.
I am still waiting on materials to arrive so I personally do not want to rush it.

April Fool's Day!!

March 30-31 is a weekend, is that close enough? :)

Does anybody have any ideas about where we could organize the get together.

I vote Knoxville, but of course I'm biased. There are certainly plenty of cool parks and stuff in eastern KY and TN that could be suitable... some of them are a little iffy about knives though, if you believe the posted signs. Private property might be better in that regard... unfortunately, my yard is a bit small for that sort of thing and there's basically zero parking :(

In any case I've picked out a heat-treated blade that fits the utility/slicer design criteria already mentioned, so if that's where we're headed I'm definitely in. All I need to do is clean it up, slap a handle on it and throw together a sheath... y'know, the easy parts :D

EDIT: would it make any sense to meet up at an existing gun show and party in the parking lot? There are always a few scheduled in this neck of the woods. I have no idea if we would need permission from the promoters or anything, just thinking out loud.

Have any parameters been posted yet?
If so, please update the first post - or start a new thread.

More than welcome in my opinion Rick. I would really like to handle one of your knives at our get together, your handle wrapping really intrigues me.

What do the entrants think about organizing the get together at a state park where we could camp with the family (I plan to bring my wife and my two oldest that are 3 and 2) and play with knives.
I have been camping several times in the Mammoth Cave area and have not had an issue with people nosing around.
We may need to make reservations if we have a sizeable group.

Any word on impartial testers yet?

So, in an effort to coagulate all this input:

Knife style: 4-6" bladed outdoor "utility"
Completion date: March 30, 2013
Submission: Bring knife in person, or send knife to a person who will bring to the judging location.
Judging: Hands-on practical use as performed by judges(yet to be determined) at a get-together somewhere in the USA...???
Awards: "King(or Queen) of the outdoor utility knife" status - at least until the next competition....????

Is that pretty close?

Peter, That is the way I understand it so far.
You and Rick going to carpool down here?

What about the slicing aspect discussed earlier? Is that going to be in the final specs? I have two knives sitting on the bench right now that would work for this. One is saber ground 3/16" thick the other is FFG 3/32" thick. You see why I want to know :D

If it counts, my vote is for focusing on the slicer aspect, over heavier, less acute knives. Simply because that narrows the parameters and put everyone on an even field. As an extreme example, it's just plain silly to test a 1/4" "sharpened prybar" against a 1/16" super-thin fillet knife.

I kNOW THIS ISNT THE EASIEST THING TO DO,RUN AN EVENT LIKE THIS,BUT IM CONFUSED AS HECK,I HAVE KNIVES ON THE BENCH,WHAT EXACTLY KINDA KNIFE ARE WE MAKING?WHAT CHORES WILL IT BE PERFORMING?CAN YOU ADD THIS AND THE MAKERS LIST TO THE 1ST PAGE UNDER YOUR FIRST POST CHRIS.PLEASE?

Hey guys! It wasnt my intention to run it, I just wanted to throw it out there to see if there was any interest. I by no means set the rules here. The biggest issue that I see is we dont have any testers. The meet and greet is a good idea but how many people can actually commit to it? These are just my suggestions but I think we should find the testers, hammer out specs and testing areas with their input and set a date. We can still have a get together but I dont know if it will work for the challenge.

so.... We need some testers!

Well, the interest is definitely there. Chris, do you want to start another post here in W&SS asking for testers? A post in the custom and handmade knives forum might help too. Once we get a few testers lined up we can figure out the little details.

What about posting this in the Outdoor Gear Section as well.

As for the knife I am really fighting with myself as to what steel and overall design I want to use.
I am a big fan of the "slicer" aspect. Thin steel and thin edge, with the focus on cutting efficiency.

I like the idea of the contest having a bit of focus on cutting efficiency. The only problem I see is that this could become a cutting competition where those who are setup to use supersteels, etc. have an advantage over the guy with 1095 and a forge. Finding a balance in the tests will be tricky.

We will have to wait until we get some testers to finalize this but I would like to see cleaning game, cutting rope and cloth, things like that in the tests.

Just my .02
