fo REAL!
a sawzall would be nice.... christmas maybe

i can hardly wait to fire it up... still gotta finish the burner

Pimpinsquee said not to use galvanized pipe... but i was plannin on sand blasting it... will that work?

thanks

I'd stay away from it alltogether-zinc is pretty bad stuff-it settles in your liver:thumbdn: -I don't know about you,but I've got better things to kill my liver with:rolleyes: :D :D

Galvanized pipe is coated inside and out. I've sand blasted and sanded the stuff--ground the inside with abrasive wheels, when there's no other way around welding. It still reacts. It doesn't seem to be a problem until the temps get pretty high like when welding or right at the end of a burner might. I'd ditch that pipe section for a piece of black pipe. What is that... $2 or $3?

Don't risk it, man... black iron pipe can be had for next to no money at all, and we won't be worrying about you DYING because of zinc poisoning -- and yes, it's a very real fear.

Sweet work, btw bro! Very adept handling of a 4" angle grinder.

haha...
this will be my 4th trip to the hardware store for these pipes..
ahh welll...
thanks for the imput... i like my life... i am rather attatched to it

I remember I had to go to 3 different hardware stores before I could find all the pipe I needed.

It looks great by the way.

Looking good. That's some swift looking cutting... You'll hate someone the first time you watch them make cuts like those with a plasma cutter in about 5 minutes ;)

Burning off galvanized pipe can definitely kill you. Good advice to stay away from it.

Let's see this thing up and running! :D

is that a vert forge? How much did this cost over all?

i guess it is a vert forge.
as to cost..
old oxygen tank: free (got it at the dump)
Cutting wheel: $2
Kaowool: $10 (i got 25' for $50)
burner tube: $5
ITC 100 coating $20

thats what $37? not bad

the burner i jsut got from Darren Ellis.. so i have to finsih putting that together before i can fire it up. i SERIOUSLY need a drill press!
i also need to put the ITC on it. but as soon as i do i will post pics

thanks!

i was thinking...

i clay quench my knives... and this new forge isnt gonna heat treat anything.
can i put a burner at one end of the other portion of the tank i have so the flame comes down the lenght of the tube for heat treating blades?

it was just a thought... but it would allow for a more even heat i would think.

something like this:

with the blade getting a more even heat laterally what think ye?
thanks
~Chris

Hi Chris, If you have materials to clay quench, you might consider putting a layer of something like satanite under your itc-100. It'll probably be more durable for you. Your heat treat forge looks like a regular horizontal forge. I'd go with one of the side mounted swirl burner placements. I think it would be tough to evenly heat a blade before the tip got a little over cooked, and it might feel a little warmer the usual with a burner pointed right out the front.
Best of luck, Craig

Chris, your doing a good job on your forge. As far as the burner placement on your horizontal forge, I'd suggest capping off the threaded end, and bringing the burner through the wall perpendicular, like your vertical forge.
Keep on with the photos!

okay...
so it sounds like i so the swirly thing just n a linger forge. do i still put the burner at the far end? or closer to the middle or what?
thanks

i'll try to avoid the flame thrower thing =) *grins*

Chris, You seem to have things in good shape. I just upgraded my Drill Press. If you want my old one I will give it to you. I will be back and forth to the Peninsula several times over the next few weeks. Send me a PM and I'll drop it off. Stacy

okay i finished it!
i put on a coat of refractory cement (which i later regretted doing.. but whats done is done)
then i got the 1 1/2" black steel pipe welded in
then i coated it with ITC 100
then i hooked it up with my brand new Venturi burner from Darren Ellis
in the pics it is running about about 5-10 psi i moved it around
