Making a forge press, or buying one?

Thank you both. Sorry didn't get right back- was out of town. Ken, I'm US- So Cal. I need to run some numbers i guess. I picked up a power unit- Vertical mount Baldor Super E around 17k rpm with a Settima pump. 5hp. I don't mind if its a little slower as long as i can get the oomph.

Stacy, thanks so much. I need to pick up the Batson's book i guess although i was thinking about 3/8 wall instead... or half inch... and I'm a ... kinda good-welder :)

novice at most things and so value your thoughts! Thanks.

So Calif - little to far away to drop by and look at my stuff {g} Can you tell us a bit more about the power unit you've got? 5hp should be plenty for the press you're looking at, but I know nothing about a Settima pump. 17,000 RPM? That's interesting. I'd love to be educated about that setup - do you have a link to it? Or, perhaps just tell us about it?

Oh man, i'd love to take a look at what others have. I've done most of this by myself...stumbling along. maybe i can send a pic. Picked up a couple of them from a warehouse. Used by the US postal service I think. Got em both for 500 and so will sell one to pay for the other? The wife will like that. IMG_5861.PNGIMG_5862.PNG
It's also 3Ph but i have built a rotary phase converter for my other tools so it'll fit in just fine.

I'm mounting it on set of 2x6 .25 wall tubing with casters and will get some 4x4 .378 wall for the two side of the H frame. picked up a "25 ton" cylinder (used to a log splitter) that 4.78 OD so i think at least 4.5 bore.

Anyway, give the mounting set up, smaller footprint and can plumb straight out of the block there on the top to the valve.

Does all that sound good to you or am I missing something?

again, so appreciate the advice here. Oh, and i'll hire out the welding for the frame. All i have is a Lincoln 140...

oh and i just put temp casters on that so i could get it out of the way before i set it up...

I like the idea of casters to roll the unit around. $250 each? You sure got heck of a deal on that power unit,. Could you get a good image of the motor tag giving HP, RPM, voltage, etc? That motor doesn't look like a 17K rpm motor, but can't tell by looking. Looks more like a 3ph motor - I expect it can be wired for 220vac just fine.

I measured my 4" cylinder and it's 4.5" OD, which is what the specs show. I would think a high pressure cylinder of 3,000 psi would have more than an 1/8" wall, but I'm no expert by any means. Even with a 4" bore, 2900psi would give 18 ton which isn't bad

thanks. good to know. I found the cylinder for 30$ so if I was wrong, not an expensive mistake. Just neeed to make sure the rod is clean...

Here's a pic of the motor plateIMG_5863 2.PNGIMG_5864.PNG

$250 - you REALLY got a deal on that setup. That tag helped my confusion on the 17K rpm. I suspect that power unit will work nicely.

5HP at 1750RPM should crank a good size pump. You got a great deal. Where are you at?

yeah I was happy. Also happy to sell the other, nearly identical one so as to pay for my steel on this build.

They were almost giving it away and I just told the guy that ain’t right. He was nice.

I’m in southern cali. Bout 80 m east of LA.

going to do 3/8 on the material for frame but wondering if I beam or square tubing is better?

I-beam or Sq tube, or angle iron all will work just fine. Which depends on the design you want for the frame. I can send you a couple of dwgs on frame if you wish. send me an email to sailingtoo at the gmail dot com place and I'l be happy to send you some ideas.
