Making a rock hand hold (socket) for a Bow Drill?

I like using a shot glass myself...

A shot glass works great, but if you use one, you should heavily duct tape the outside of the glass. They have been know to break when used as a top bearing so the duct tape can protect you from a nasty cut.

Thanks for that Doc.

I learned a couple of lessons today:

1) You cannot machine Teflon to be a top bearing - it melts! ;)
2) Aluminum DOES work - VERY well. I machines a two in bar (knurled and set two notches in the top and bottom - one 3/16 ball end - one 5/8th ball end. It does transfer some heat up to the hand if you do two or three fires in a row - but no big deal.

The 3/16 held up great to a few fires I cranked out.
