If I cut a pc of 0-1 or 1084 about .5" thick.... drilled, countersunk for machine screws, fastened to a pc of softer steel for bulk and weight....what Rockwell hardness should I heat treat the face plate? Overall size would be about 5"x5"x5" with about an inch of the heat treated steel hanging over for hardie, etc. Thanks. Any better ideas for a steady as I don't think any are available for sale and I've been looking on ebay for two yrs!

Hello John

I made a cutlers steady a couple years ago and I used D-2 for the top
I heat treated to 54RC and it seems to work well at that hardness.

If I can help with photos of mine or anything else let me know

Thanks Charles..I would enjoy seeing your steady. Maybe mine is a poor design and the more input the better the end product. Thanks fo the 54 info.

Red x's for me. I pasted the foto addy from the (right click) "Properties" into the browser and it goes back to a BF screen that says "Invalid Attachment", if that helps you at all.

Well I posted the pics through photobucket did it work????

I uploaded the pics too BladeForums but they have left the building.

I see 'em all, now, Charles. Nicely fabricated anvil!

Nice semi-skinner, BTW. ;)

Dave, this little anvil is an old design used by cutlers making and repairing pocket knives.
I use it mostly for peening pins

I also have a sorta naive question. Anyone make these and sell them?

I don't have access to a milling machine or I'd make my own.

I'd like to buy one of these.

VERY NICE job with that cutlers steady. Thanks for posting those images.

THis is the one that Tony Bose uses.

anyone have instructions on how to make one? im pretty sure i can heat treat it with my forge now that ive learned how to fine tune it thanks to darren ellis and his brain. that anvil would be perfect for when i start putting handles on my knives.
