Making a Traditional Bow

Yes please! I recently got into trad bows and I'd love to have a go at making my own.

Hi Chris, that would be so cool to see how you do that. thanks alot. Looking forward to seeing the way it is done.

Well, good deal. I’m glad you all are interested, because I started videoing already, before the big game today. Now I’m too full of Rotel & Chips, that I can’t do anymore, but I think my wife’s going to post the starting of it tomorrow night. I’m not real bright on the computer, so she has to do it. As far as the horse bow, I’ve always wanted to make one, and now that you’ve asked, I may just do it… I haven’t seen a bow I can’t make yet. I’m not a real TV personality, so don’t laugh. I can be kind of goofy in front of the camera, but you’ll still learn basic bow making 101. Talk at you later. Chris (Archer)

Thanks Chris. I'm not sure what you use for bow string but I'd appreciate it if you threw in some pointers on that too. Materials, knots, etc.

I know nothing about bow making. I've always wanted a recurve but limited funds has made getting a good one tough. I feel like I'm missing out on some good stuff.

I'm in! Totally interested and it is very appropriate for this forum.:thumbup:

With all the bow pics on here and finding the old bow again that i forgot about ... I get more intrested in learning about them.. Would love to see a video about bows and as Rupestris said how to make a string as well.

I actually have a question, that I haven't found a definate answer to, about bows. When I have shot a bow I shoot with my left hand holding and right hand drawing the bowstring. I have noticed a lot of bows with the arrow rest on the left side of the bow and guys shooting the way I do using them. I know on compound bows the rest is on the same side as the hand you draw with, so I was wondering is it not supposed to be on the same side as your drawing hand for a recurve or self bow, etc?

BTW: I would also like to see a tutorial on making a bow.

As long as you back it with snake skin or bamboo I am in. Sinew backed are not as pretty!!

Im in as well... working on a local whitewood bushbow now to get the skills back up before starting the osage.... only to finish w a take down yew english long bow....

I'm in! The timing on this couldn't be any better for me(Thanks for the heads-up, Doug:thumbup:). I just ordered some supplies and have been practicing following growth rings on scraps. :D I have SO MANY questions, but I'll wait until this gets going before I start babbling.

<to late>

Oh yes this will be super! I have just started shooting a low weight recurve and would like to build one with a heaver draw weight.

I just want to bump this up and say thanks Chris, this is gonna be one seriously popular thread here!!! This is a skill that can save a life in its roughest form and is art in its highest form..I buy traditional archer magazine whenever I see it on the stands...I can never get enough of seeing different bows, and I love the letters and pictures of first timers bows! I own a compound and a recurve..and I get almost zero excitement out of the compound..something so satisfying about instinct shooting and hitting the target versus peepsights where I basically know that I am gonna hit everytime...

+1, I would be interested in everything from making to shooting. I shoot a compound bow occasionally but would be a dream to make/shoot a traditional one.

That would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!

I just got into traditional archery, so I look forward to the tutorial.

The arrow rests on the left side of the bow for a right handed shooter (right hand draws) and on the right side of the bow for left handed shooters (left hand draws).

As far as I know it is that way for compound shooters as well. I've never seen a right handed shooter shoot an arrow off of the right side of the bow.

Don't quote me on this, but I think it has something to do with the way the string rolls off your fingers. But it definately allows for a better sight picture. Since most compound shooters use a release I can see how a few might shoot on the "wrong" side of the bow, but it seams it would be hard to get a decent sight picture.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in...
