Mammoth Ivory

Yes, the only one I've seen in person was a white one that had turned cream. One just like that sold for $1500 USD. I didn't like the cream it faded into. Then I tried to find a bark to get, and after I saw that blue one, none have ever given me the draw I needed to throw down the money.

It's a grail to me. That's why I saved the pic.

I imagine that one's a grail to a lot of us here. I'd snap it up in a heartbeat if I could. Blue and green is especially desirable in the mammoth, along with red. I have one that's got both blue and green, although it's just a 21. That one won't be homeless for a while to come.

I agree with Justin, I had two large annuals with cream scales and Damascus sent to me by CRKs to look over for purchase. I passed because of the yellow/tan colors.

Renaissance wax works very well. Also try to keep fingerprints and other oils off the ivory. It should stay white for years. Keep in mind too ancient elephant ivory is different from 100,000 year old mammoth. Exposure to the element over time helps retain the color. Or so I've heard.

Thank you for sharing that tip.

At one point I was obsessed with getting at least one pure white example.

Then one night while laying in bed, it occurred to me. The titanium, iron and all the other elements that went into the knife are billions of years old, way older than the mammoth, and it was going to turn cream so just give it up.

Maybe I'm odd.

Just what my wife wants to hear, $1000+ in a knife sitting in a drawer that I won't let anyone touch or let light hit. I only bring it out once a year to ogle and wax it in the dim lighting of a candle.

Hahahaha.

Maybe I can tell her it's part of a self-directed precious metals 401k??!

Lol. Don't be afraid to use these friends. That's what they're for.

Right now it's probably a better investment than a 401k!!!

Many years ago my wife looked at a pure white mammoth ivory knife i had and asked it it was plastic which i had to admit it did look like.................it was nothing but bark after that...............
