Man survives bear attack with knife

It says 5" knife... wonder if it was a Buck 119, or a KaBar USMC... really I guess it could be anything.

And to think, this was a black bear.. like the smallest kind of bear there is in North America. Glad it wasnt a Brown bear, or a Grizzly..

Nice, I too want to know what the knife was.

It was no pip-squeak bear, 525 lbs. That's getting into grizzly size.

If I ever go hunting in bear country, I'm leaving my favorite 3" drop point at home & taking my Puma Bowie!

The article said the bear had been shot about 4 hours earlier. That probably pissed the bear off and put him into a rage-like state.

No doubt that dude is one tough mother. It's always good to see these POSITIVE knife-related stories out there.

It's weird because I was just watching a show called Human Prey on Netflix last night. The episode was on bear attacks.

I know a member on here was attacked by a bear in alaska and managed to kill it with his kukri... Maybe he will pop on

Yes, 525 pounds is huge for a black bear. The bear was wounded and obviously pissed. I would never archery hunt for bear without a pistol. I am a pretty good shot with a bow, but anything can happen especially when the animal is that big. I am glad the man had his knife and survived.

Wow, you mean the bear didn't take the knife from him and use it against him? Wow, he also managed NOT to cut himself in the process! Goes against the wisdom here don't it? Lucky guy indeed, wish him the best. What a story for the grand kids.

Agreed. I carry my Casull.

Who says Rambo knives are worthless? ;)

Good one! :D The knife also had a serrated back - probably caused a little extra damage when pulling it out of the bear.

Max black bear that a hunter took in PA is 900 lbs !!!.
I've been about 15' from a 400 lb bear and that's a lot of bear .That one was hanging around and we figured 400 lb but most people over estimate their weight. BUT they are extremely powerful and to go bear to cold steel is an enormous job !

This illustrates a great point about cutlery and our crazy obsession with high end everything. That knife is some cheap aircrew survival style knife, with what looks like a stacked leather handle and unknown steel. If I had to guess it is a basic carbon like 1095 or a 420 series. And GASP, IT KILLED A BEAR!!!! it just proves that the user is more important than the tool.

I absolutely agree with your sentiment Riz,

Although I think it's worth noting, sometimes we forget how "light-skinned game" humans and other mammals are. Of course the bear has a much thicker hide than your average human, but if you're effective with it, most mammals can be dispatched with a cheap knife.

If I had to use a knife to defend myself, it wouldn't bother me if it was a cheapie.

The knife looks pretty narrow in that still frame, much narrower than I expected.

I'm surprised he didn't lose grip of his knife from the sawteeth getting hung up.

I agree...'cept it looks like it has an orange handle in the pic. Must have been someone's exclusive.

If this was an upper end knife owned by a blade aficionado he would have given full mention and credit during the piece. It's probably something he picked up at the Cabella's last fall. I'd like to know what it is too.
