Man survives bear attack with knife

No I'm not threatned by stupidity.

If you're idea of a great hunt is to go at a bear with a knife, don't be surpised when the after party is at the VIP lounge in the ER. It'll probably be the last time that guy disrespects local wildlife and other hunters not being prepared to ethically take a resource.

How about killing with teeth?

Who ever claimed it was a "Great Hunt"? Its an amazing story of Surviving a Bear attack, with only a knife. Which is why it is of even more interest on a Knife forum. With Human vs Bear attacks and encounters on the rise, its not just "Stupidity" that finds people staring down a Bear without a firearm, its the fact that Bears natural habitat is constantly shrinking.

Making statements like "Serves him right" he got what he deserves Is disgusting to me...Go play with your Toy Guns.

That's why I posted the guy who killed one with a rock, he wasn't even hunting.

I agree though that with more people out in the woods, bear attacks are unfortunately going to be more common. I grew up around black bears, so perhaps my understanding is a little biased. I don't carry a sidearm everyday I'm in bear country to be fair, but I'm very familiar with their behavior and how to deal with them. I always have a knife though I wouldn't want to think of it as anything but a last resort. If I've gotten myself in that position, I done F-ked up. If I'm going hunting for bear, we load for bear. Anything else in my eye's is playing with your life.

Sure, but most hunting accident's are user error, and yes, the guy finished it off with a knife, but this isn't an uncommon thing. A user on here had a pretty crazy story recently: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1217819-So-that-happened-*Warning-for-those-who-are-squeamish*?highlight=bear+attack+knife

While I've never been the biggest fan of bait and wait bear campers, I respect everyone's right to have a good time in the outdoors. I personally like smaller trips rather than the large group (although I'm sure it's more fun in other parts of the country), I feel like it's less stress and less logisitics to have to go through just to get out. I'm glad the guy who tango'd with it was able to survive for his family's sake. I just feel the firefighter and people who helped keep that guy alive are the real bad asses is all. It is a wild story, I'll give it that. I wonder who got the tag in the end?!

Sport hunters suck and peoples behavior towards killing or using animals for sport, entertainment, medical research, fur etc makes me sick . If you need something challenging in your life, do something where no animal will be harmed. Take on big wave surfing, hiking, saving animals etc. Stop killing animals who pose no threat to you or the planet.

Do you mean trophy hunters? Like the guys who kill just to stuff it and throw the meat away?

Yup, you're from San fransisco alright:rolleyes:

NorCal has some great hunting and fishing opportunities. Not all of us are tree huggers.

Fair enough. I know what you mean, I pass through there every time we drive up to see the Canadian relatives. There are some awesome foresty areas once you get north of the cities.

I'm in SoCal, btw. So I probably shouldn't be dissing anyone:p LAs just as bad

Medical research is a pretty valid reason dude... but for the most part I guess I agree with you. My uncle loves to fish although he hasn't in years, but he doesn't kill/eat the fish, and I've never really understood why. I don't think he's a bad guy for just fishing, obviously, it's more likely he's just never considered that he's leaving a fish with a big damn hole in its mouth.

All that said, in recent years I've come to the conclusion that hunting, itself, isn't usually all that challenging... at least where deer or other "lesser" animals are concerned. They have some speed and heightened senses and I have guns, scopes, equipment, etc that likely far outweighs the deer's natural ability. Nothing to brag about, when all is said and done. But nothing to be ashamed of, either. For me, climbing a mountain would be a challenge (and close to impossible, if I am honest.)

I respect your thoughts on this truly, but here's the problem.

Being from here I can say that the local hunting/fishing culture around here is one of the most respectful I've ever encountered in terms of harvesting wildlife as a resource. Yea there are a lot of rich trophy hunters who want a few "choice" cuts and the proof to say they brought down something exotic in their lives, but thankfully that's a minority. I will say that one of the biggest dangers we face up here is illegal marijuana cultivation on both public, private, and tribal lands. These guys are not just poachers, they leave car batteries in creeks, rat poision on the forrest floor, and a multitude of other extremely ecogoclogical disastrous camps. Not to mention cartel camps are usually armed and shoot at what they deem as "trespassers".

I suggest some thoughts on the meat not being wasted and instead being sent to foodbanks via hunters and game control dept http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/12/09/368757401/venison-chili-complements-of-national-park-service-deer-thinning

It may be one of the best alternatives we have to the industrialized agriculture we have here in CA which largely caused our drought in the first place.

I enjoy all those other things you stated, but it'd be hard for me to say that the surfboard making process is anything but destructive to the environment. If you knew, you might not want to support it as much.

Hiking's great too, but the same disruption to wildlife and native plants has become almost hallmark in our failure to carry the legacy of Muir into the future.

Saving animals is your personal perogative, I've saved quite a few injured animals in my time at least long enough to get to rehab center, but I've also put more animals to death than I can count. As a hunter, fisher and a chef. People need to eat, and government subsidized soy and corn isn't going to be in my diet.

I used to date a neuroscientist, whom used a mouse model to study naturally occuring developmental defects. Those scientists care for those animals like nothing I've ever seen, their funding and success in academia depends on it. You can disagree all you want, but without those studies over the last few thousand years, we wouldn't be here.

I think countless generations of hominds might disagree with your thoughts on fur and the successes it provided to our survival.

Not all from CA belive the same thing, I think most of the comments I hear about CA are generally from people who haven't met many locals on through trips. We like knives, guns, bourbon just like the rest of you...we just have better weather ;)

Only Californians would think that if you dump water into a arid environment for 100 years would you have something different when the water runs out. :D
