Managing expectations of edge retention

Yeah, there’s no way non-machine sharpening is going to detemper a blade.
The problem is not over tempering an entire blade, but rather the micron thick apex, and the microns behind that apex. My policy is whether I am using the grinder or hand sharpening, there is water (or oil in the case of oilstones) involved.

Better to use some kind of lube to preserve the plates and reduce clogging, but temperature is not a reason.
 
I mean the landes thing did say specifically they got those heats by just doing it by hand.

I feel like anyone that has used a coarse oilstone, with a lot of pressure, can tell you. Doing grinding by hand can heat up a blade. I know ive felt a blade get warm doing heavy grinding on one.
 
I know how hot it gets just using a hacksaw.

I use a Wicked Edge, so I'll have to think of a good way to keep it cool. I feel like it's a step worth taking just to be on the safe side.
