Mandatory pictures of items in sales threads?

Who doesn't like pretty pictures!!

I think they should be mandatory and they should be of the actual knife. Oh and descent pics, not blurry cell phone pics!

I think I've gotta side with the 'buyer beware' concept here, as many others have. There are plenty of (well-thought out) rules on the site; adding another doesn't guarantee a higher percentage of satisfied buyers. I think it is probably good for your sale to include pictures; if you don't, potential buyers are likely to ask for them, which does beg the question--if you have them, why didn't you post them initially? That being said, trying to chase down idiots and scammers by instituting more restrictive regulations rarely succeeds...besides, I like this place just the way it is :)

I think pics should be mandatory and MUST be posted at the time the thread is posted. None of this...... "pics to follow" stuff.

Nope. I don't post pics. I won't use a hosting site and I have no intention of doing so. Maybe I would post pics if it were as easy as eBay but that's probably not cost effective for the site.

errrrrrrrrr, uhhhhhhhhhhhh, - as a Gold Member, can't you use the attachment option for posting pictures - even in the For Sale Forums? Easy - Peasy and no need to use a hosting site.

Yes, as gold and above you can use BF site.. not hard...

And the people that claim they don't know how to upload photos is a cop out. You can use a computer, figure out how to get online and join a forum, YOU CAN UPLOAD A STUPID PICTURE. meh.

Absolutely! Buying something sight unseen is not a good thing.

I want multiple views and a good description, but I'd like to get what I pay for, maybe thats too much to ask for?

Not to call you out Dwayne, but as a custom craftsman, isn't most of your business sight unseen, and based on your reputation instead? Would you like to have to post pictures of each sheath you sell before you are allowed to sell it? Or is a gentleman's agreement sufficient?

Actually quite the opposite. I'm mot going to speak for Dwayne, but all makers get recognition based on hat the customers see, in pictures. Now, please keep things on the topic at hand. Thanks.

You can't save people from themselves. People with no common sense will just find more ways to make bad decisions and new things to complain about.

Imposing mandates will accomplish nothing except irritating people that do just fine already and don't feel like being told what to do, even if it is exactly what they were already going to do anyway.

How many.....

...GB&U threads have been started over condition, switched parts, mis-described sale items? AND some who have posted these threads don't supply pics until a dozen pages are on the server.
Buyer-"I received a knife with the tip broken off! I got ripped off but I don't have pics to show, trust me on this, that seller sucks. I did try and fix it myself, I'll get pics up soon" (6 more GB&U pages on the server),
Seller-"The tip wasn't broken off when I shipped it"
Neither have pics of condition when shipped or of the received condition. No pics in original sale thread. Mod's left to clean up mess.

....fakes are listed that the seller might not even know is a fake?

..... stolen knives have been spotted by forum members and reported?

....... times has one knife been sold to multiple members and in some cases across multiple forums? And after a GB&U thread, all who were burned provide the same emailed pictures? Pics upon post could have saved a lot of members hard earned $ from scams.

No problem at all, but I do try to take a picture of every notable sheath I make. But the main difference in what I do is by custom order, not a product sale. If I went to a production format where I make first then sell, then yes! I would most assuredly have to take pictures of what I am selling, otherwise how would the customer know what he is getting?

When I do custom carving I do try to show a design first for approval, they have to live with it. If I just did what I wanted then sent it to them I dont think I'd be around for much longer.

When I sell sheaths that are left over, or abandoned for non payment I take a picture of it so the buyer knows what he is looking at, otherwise how do they know if it will fill their needs? Lets say for example I am selling a pouch sheath............. uhm yea, whatsit look like, whatsit fit, how deep does it fit the knife, what color is it exactly, etc etc etc. Without pictures you got nothing.

When I sell knives, I take pictures, often lots of them trying to show condition and type. I've never sold a knife without showing it to the buyer first. I've NEVER bought a knife without seeing a picture first. This goes especially well when one is selling a hand made knife, a simple description just wont do. Doesn't matter if its a 50 dollar knife or a 2,000 dollar custom piece of art.

I hope this clears it up a little, I'm sleepy right now so if I missed anything please feel free to ask away! I've been selling, trading, and a professional sheath maker here since 2001, and doing leather and knife trading in general since the early 90's. :)

EDIT: heh heh heh 10,666th post, I picked a doozie! :p

It appears most want it so I say No :D Less potential buyers which means more potential deals for me muwahahahaha. Now all I gotta do is find some uncommon sense.

Really though, if anything should be mandatory it should be no paypal gift or added fees on the buyer for sales as its against the paypal rules we all agree to abide. We should also make reporting all sales and purchases mandatory at years end to the IRS since its a law. Just kidding, laws and rules are lame. WE NEED MANDATORY PICS!!!! :p

Let's say pictures are required, and I want to sell my BM 940. Would these pictures satisfy you?
They will be the only ones in the listing. Question for the group.

Ok. I was wrong. Never posted a pic or did a attachment in my life. Never needed to, I've always had office support. But I just did it in a sales thread and it was extremely easy using a smartphone and accessing the photo option. I still couldn't do it with a computer though.

So, if it makes life easier for the mods, which it should, then at least a pic should be provided. And I wholeheartedly agree with the no PayPal fee add on, or reguireing gift. Just price it with all fees factored in. Thanks for helping out a technotard...

Who is trying to save anyone? It's a discussion about an aspect of the forums, discussion is what we do here. Enforcing rules keeps things running smoothly. Not everyone displays such a rebellious or unprincipled attitude as you are describing. In life as you may or may not know, we are always playing by someone else's rules. I'd like to give people more credit than to assume they are that childish.
