Manix 2 lwt., Native 5 lwt., Endura 4 ffg.

I must admit that the Stretch is also a great suggestion, too. I would just bite the bullet, but my siblings and I try to keep gifts in the $50 range - I always break that, but I'm trying not to double it. :D

$64.95 isn't far out of your $50 range, and a lot closer than the Manix.

Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, where you at approximately in MI? I'm in northern Oakland county, just up the road from the Palace...

So do I. In Oakland Twp., lol. :D Are you in LO or Oxford?

Thanks guys. I think he'd be happy with each of them, honestly. I have some time to figure it out yet. :D

Ha yeah actually between Oxford and Ortonville.

You know of any good places around that carry a decent selection of blades? I always stroll through Bass Pro, but their selection is pretty poor and prices on the high side.

Nope, I was going to ask you the same, haha. The only knife shop I've ever seen in Mi is in downtown Marshall. I can't even remember the name of that one, and it isn't exactly convenient. But yeah, Bass Pro at GLC - same. :D

Knifeworks has the black g-10 Manix 2 plain edge in stock again at $80 if you're still looking to get one. I'm going to send a PM in case he misses this.

First off, I do not own an Endura (it just doesn't do anything for me), but I do have both a BD1 Manix LW and a Native 5 LW S35VN.

I personally would not gift an unlined FRCP or FRN knife to someone who job arguably requires a HD knife. The Manix LW and Native 5 LW both are incredibly capable and ready for the majority of tasks most users will subject them to/expect of them. I certainly wouldn't call them weak but, I wouldn't call them HD either. I just feel they are both more suited for EDC type tasks than the work conditions you described.

The Manix 2 might be a little shorter than the Endura, but it's still by no means a small knife. In fact, to me it has all the 'visual mass', if not more, than the Endura.

My Manix LW lock is far from fun to play. It's sticky and pretty stiff. The Axis lock makes it (the CBB lock) look pretty crude IMO. Could just be my example.

I wouldn't worry a bit about the pinned construction of the Manix LW, mine is just as perfect as it was when I bought it and I don't see it I see loosening up over time. If anything, I see the failure point/scenario of the Manix LW, for example, being close to the pivot under a torsional load. More to do with materials than construction method.

So of the 3 you mentioned, I'd say the Endura is the most HD and ready for the work outlined. The Native 5 is better for everything else, particularly for easing the minds of the 'He's got a knife!!! Ahhhh!!!!' -people.

Ha, thanks for the in-depth response. I did in fact order him the regular-ass Manix G10. That should be more than enough to handle whatever he can throw at it. I have to keep reminding myself that I already got him a RAT II, which is fairly people-friendly. He also has a Skyline that I bought him. He should be good to go for a while now.

Thanks again everybody.

I ordered myself a red/satin Zancudo while I was at it. Triggered free shipping making the Esee $20 shipped. Yay.

Got your PM - ordered it. Thanks!

Glad I could help. I'm looking at getting another Manix 2 or Para Military 2 and saw they were in stock again. Both my Manix 2 lock were a little stiffer at first but they got better fast and have become very easy and smooth. I have stronger hands and can open and close both of mine without touching the blade even from NIB. Others have said it was too hard, it's different for everyone. From the sound of it he has a blue collar job just like me, he'll probably be fine. Since his Birthday isn't for awhile you could "break it in" for him by "vigorously" testing out the lock;), you might even like it!

I had a Cruwear Manix on pre-order for a couple of months, but it was discontinued so I cancelled the order last week. I'll probably just give it to him early though, since he's getting into his busy 'spring season.'

When I read that you ordered a G10 Manix for him, it made me smile. Nice.
It also made me wonder if I've treated my siblings poorly because I can't see them ever buying me one knife, let alone three. :)

My first "decent" folder was a gift from one of my two dear departed brothers. It was a SOG Twitch II, before that it was walmart junkers that cost $10-$20. When my brother was killed his Twitch XL was given to me by the state trooper that came to my door to tell me he was gone, he worried someone would snatch it. I actually bought them ammo, gun parts, and all manner of other things. I always went over the $50-$75 limit, I'll never regret that. Your brother will be very appreciative vanslem6. Seeing their face light up when they open the box, well that to me was worth more than any gift.

I think most people who say that lock is stiff (which honestly they are, even with "break-in") are comparing it to a Benchmade Axis lock, which is difficult to compare to because those are smooth as butter and can be engaged effortlessly with 1 fingernail if needed. I've got 2 Manix 2's, one being a quite old one with the 154cm saber ground blade, and while it can be opened and closed 1 handed, it still takes more effort and concentration than an Axis lock.
The ball bearing on my Dodo is very easy though, but it lacks grip texture for one finger operation.

Oh and sad story about your bro, my condolences.

The Cruwear is my favorite Manix 2. Keep an eye out on the exchange.

What warehouse your bro work in?

+1. Sorry to hear.

I'd love a Cruwear still, but I can't justify it right now. Maybe eventually, or maybe I'll find something else. It's certainly not a need. :p

He works for my parents, so it's a little building next to the house. It's kind of a 'redneck' operation, lol. We unload semi-trucks with forks on a New Holland tractor, lol. You get a lot of weird looks from the neighbors when you're pulling 11 pallets off a truck parked in front of the house, with a little blue tractor. Ha.

Thanks for the comments and input. I don't like buying people 'crap,' because I hate getting 'crap,' lol. I know it's a knife that's going to last, and I know it's certainly going to be used. Ultimately the price doesn't matter, I know it isn't going to live in a drawer all its life.

This^^^^^^^

I have been carrying and using my S30v/G10 Manix 2 for a week. Love the ergos, solid feel, size. Still undecided on the BBL.

The good news is that he doesn't own a knife with an Axis lock! He's only played with mine a few times. He'll like the ball lock - hell, he'll love the damn knife. :D We buy other people things we like, and I know I like nice things. :p

Ha definitely a good outlook.

Don't get me wrong, wasn't trying to knock the lock on the Manix, there are NEVER any doubts about it! It's just not as effortless is all I was getting at.

Glad to hear you held out for the G10 Manix, at a great price too. You both should be very pleased with it.
