Manix 2 XL, My first impressions.

OK I did it... I now have a Gayle Bradley on the way... thanks a lot kreole... Making me get that GB afterall with those pics you put up.

Actually, I have been wanting one for a while and that just helped me pull the trigger (and finding one on the exchange for a very nice price didn't hurt).

:D Good! We're even! I had not paid attention at all to the M2 XL til this thread of yours.

IMO by any measure the GB is one of the best knives Spyderco makes. I doubt you'll be sorry.

Ok we are even then. One question, what's next? ;)

Ok My Manix XL came today. and so far I'm really likeing it. Like its not bad, theres nothing really wrong with it. Though I do find the lock hard to use. Not really a big deal.

I don't know. I'm just feeling this one. But I'll give it a little bit of time. Perhaps it'll break in some and my thoughts will change.

I'm with you on that. It probably isn't a knife for everyone but it is well designed and executed. No major flaws but nothing that I would say that I love either (like the compression lock On my pm2.). The best thing is the price for such a solid knife so even if you don't love it, you don't get buyers remorse and still see its potential. IMO anyway

Are you guys using both your thumb and index finger to disengage the lock? I will admit that it is a little harder to disengage than an Axis Lock from Benchmade but I actually prefer it that way.

Yeah, I also didn;t check for it earlier when it came as had company and was only flipping it open and closed. But mine does have a good amount of blade play.

Can you discribe your blade play issue?

First I'd just make sure all the screws are tight, as a screw not tightened all the way could give it play. After that it might be worth loosening the screws and trying to shift the scales around a bit (don't take it apart else your warranty is void). As I mentioned before, my tip became centered after I disassembled mine, so there is some room for things to shift around even with the shouldered bushing.

edit: Also I should have mentioned there is blue locktite on each screw, so make sure the torx wrench is situated in the head well before turning. Mine wasn't hard to break, but no reason to risk a stripped head.

It had significant side to side play when open. But even more weird something I never had as I decided to try and adjust it, it has even more play when closed. you can actually move the blade around in the closed position so much you can actually make it almost touch the liners. And I can't seem to tighten the thing.

Oh and the lock is so hard to disengage I actually need to use both hands most times so far.

Sounds like you need to send it back to the dealer for exchange.

It definitely seems like something is "off" on that particular knife. Not that is any consolation to you but mine is perfectly centered, locked up like a friggen vault and fairly easy to disengage the lock. I am sure with all that stuff wrong with yours, it might have something to do with the screws not being tight enough which will cause blade plan and perhaps some issues with disengagement. Good luck!

Yeah. I'm not complaining too much. I don't want it to sound like I'm ripping on Spyderco SPyderco is a great company, I understand these things happen sometimes.

The dealer I got it from gives seven days to inspect and notify you wish to return it. So I'm going to see if it doesn't break in or something over another day or two. If not than I plan on exchange it for another one.

I just received mine a couple hours ago! There's a small hint in this first pic in regards to where I purchased it from. I really love this knife. Like others have said....it's very smooth opening and closing. I wonder if the number of coils in the spring have been reduced or if it's a new spring all together but I noticed it's easier to close compared to my other Manix 2 pictured. This is going to be my EDC for awhile.

It almost looks like the same size as the smaller Manix 2.

Looks good. I just traded mine for a military because I am planning on getting the cf/s90v sprint manic XL. I just got a gayle Bradley too and I think you need one of those;). Seriously miles ahead anything else i have had in the fit & finish dept.

I have a Manix XL. I also had an orginal Manix ce that I traded.....would have kept it if it was a pe tho.

The orginal has a very strong back lock, the blade has a little shorter cutting edge than the 2 XL, 4mm thick blade vs. 3.5 on the 2 XL, solid liners, the only jimping is

on the thumb ramp. I really like both knives a lot.

I made a couple of mods on my 2 XL to make it look and feel like an orginal Manix. I used my dremel to grind off all the jimping except the thumb ramp(feels Much better

without the extra jimping IMO) . I also heat treated the clip so it's a medium dark brown color with an anodized top and bottom. I don't like the shiny clips Spyderco puts on most of their knives now.

It looks and feels like the orginal Manix except for a different lock and a smaller lanyard hole.

Mine has a fair amount of side-to-side blade play, and no amount of screw tightening can fix that. The blade is slightly off center as well. Overall, I like the design, the size, light weight for its size, and how it compliments the smaller M2. It's going back for an replacement.

I like my 2XL even more than the Manix 2, which pushed my trusty Native 2 lightweight out of its spot as my usual carry knife.

I accidentally tried to cut a steel wire with it last week, so still have a small spot to sharpen out...
