Manix?

like, "Manix a fine knife, for sure."

You, my friend, are very, very, strange.

Funny, but strange.

Thanks for the laugh. (First of the day. Hmm. 1:45pm... not bad.)

I was just looking at spydercos site and I noticed that the blade steel for the manix is listed as just S30V while all the other knives with it have it listed as CPM-S30V. Is there actually any difference or is it just an oddity in the listing?

Same thing.

So, Dennis...let's hear your thoughts...

:)

The Manix has everything to make it my favorite current production Spyderco (had to say current production so my Wegner doesn't get jealous ;) )

  • Full flat grind
  • Extra wide blade
  • S30V blade steel
  • Versatile blade shape
  • Super strong lock (reminds me of racking a shotgun)
  • No blade play
  • Secure grip
  • G-10 scales
  • Multiple clip position availability

The knife looks and acts bigger than it really is. I think this is because of the wide blade. You can see from the pictures posted above that it really isn't any longer than the Benchmade 710, but it sure looks a lot bigger. The manix seems to violate the laws of physics. Lucky for us the laws of physics arent enforced by man so I think this is a great knife for people who want mega folders but are limited to under 4" by law.

Mine locks up tighter than the bark on a tree. No blade play at all. The blade is perfectly centered and doesn't rub the liners upon opening.

The handle is pretty ergonomic. I have handled a few knives that are more comfortable, but I would put this near the top. This is totally subjective though. I have heard one complaint about the handle. The reviewer, Wire Edge, said "I don't think I'm going to like the sharp 'pinky hook' at the butt end. It seems like every time I index the knife and then go into a hammer grip, I get poked with the G-10 at that extreme point of the flare. The grip is very secure, but somewhat limited for bigger hands." I personally like the pinky hook. It fits my hand just right. My hand are a little above average. I do see where this could be a problem for someone with really large hands. I dont think it will be a problem for most.

I am indecisive about the clip position. Part of me would like the knife to ride lower, but I like the fact that the pivot is accessible without moving the clip.

Personally I think this is the best Spyderco to come down the pike in awhile. Its also not as "ugly" as many Spyderco's and may have cross over appeal to people that are turned off by Spyderco's functional ugliness.

I usually by spares of the knives I really like. I have already ordered a second Manix.

I've been waiting and wondering how other people's Manix(es?) would be before commenting on mine.
Mine came with blade play in all directions, though the horizontal play disappeared after tightening the pivot. It still has some vertical play, and being a lockback, it's only going to get worse. I love everything else about the knife, but I guess I'll send it back. Maybe the Paramilitary will go with it.

I just got mine. It's perfect in every respect. Absolutely zero bale play in any direction, even when I yank on the blade really hard near the tip. Everything lines up perfectly both opened and closed. Blade is perfectly centered. I feel like Golden raised the bar on QC for the Manix (sorry about yours Owen). I handled a second one at the store, and it was the same.

I think that Eric stepped up to the plate and hit the ball right out of the park on this one. It's like he read my mind (and other's too apparently) on what a perfect heavy duty folder should be. Congratulations on a great design Eric!

If anyone is interested, River's Edge in Columbus, Ohio still has 3 PE and 2 CE in stock right now. (614) 792-EDGE (3343). They're great people to deal with.

Dennis and/or Keith,

How smooth is the Manix's opening?

I consider the Golden Native to be one of the smoothest and most effortless to open lockback I own. How does the Manix compare?

Thanks

For a lockback its pretty smooth. I think the oversize opening hole and size of the blade helps in this respect. Its not going to be as smooth as some liner locks and such, but not bad at all.

Cool. I'm glad to hear y'all aren't having any blade play.
Here's something weird. It mostly went away went I fiddled around with the screw through the lockbar, and slightly loosened the smaller T6 screws. Now there is just a barely perceptible "shift" when I put pressure on the blade.
Regardless, I am all over this design. I CANNOT stop playing with this knife. I love it. The Paramilitary keeps jumping in my pocket when it's time to go to work, but maybe I'll start carrying the Manix once I get used to it. It doesn't seem so huge after using it, and carrying it around the house for a couple of days.
The factory edge was great, and it's one of the few factory knives that I own that I consider usable out of the box. Usually, I reprofile the edge, put a mirror polished back bevel at a lower angle, and all that good stuff, but I've been really impressed with how this knife cuts right out of the box. I gave it a stroke or two on the corners of the Sharpmaker white stones, and stropped it on a loaded strop, and it was popping hairs off above the skin. Haven't beat it up or anything, but I've been using it around the house.
Yesterday I cut up a few cardboard shipping boxes, Rid-X and detergent boxes, a gallon jug, and one of those big plastic bottles that 5lb of protein powder come in. It still shaved cleanly, and two licks on the strop put it back to popping hair again.
If the lock doesn't come around to absolute perfect after screwing with it some more, and I do send it back to get checked out, watch me buy another one first. Finally got a big flat ground blade with a Spyderhole, and tip-up carry (yeah, it works great with a zip-tie), and it's hard to even put the thing down sometimes:)

Hey Shootist16, thanks for quoting me, I somehow missed this thread. I've been carrying and using my Manix since Thurs. night, and I just love it! I actually think it's winning me over, and taking 1st place, putting the Military in 2nd.

The pinky hook really bothered me, too dang sharp. So I took some sandpaper and smooth the G-10 down a bit. It still wasn't enough, so I took a dremel to it and took the point off. I didn't have to remove much material at all, and the knife still looks almost identical, but it no longer jabs my pinky finger, it's much more comfortable to use for extended periods now. I cut up sooooo much cardboard on Fri. morning, probably 500 slices at least. No sore spots resulted. I few swipes on on the Sharpmaker with white stones at 40 degrees and the blade was scaring hair off my arm again. S30V is great stuff!

The smoothness of opening is great for such a rugged lockback. As far as carrying, I've just switched over to tip up. For me this is a much slower to deploy carry method than tip down, but too much of the knife sticks up with tip down. The shiny pivot, and some blade tang shows above the pocket with tip down. Tip up is much more concealed, but there's still a pretty big chunk of knife handle showing.

No prob. I thought your review was very well thought out. I also believe in giving credit where credit is due.

Speaking of credit, Eric did a great job on this design.

My Manix is quite smooth both opening and closing. It's one of those knives that, even though there's no play in the blade whatsoever, will "drop" the blade when you release the lock, for super-easy one-hand closing.

P.S. I also have the Chinook II, and prefer the ergos on the Manix. Feels like it was made for my hand in multiple positions.

Thank you Sal!

The Manix and the yellow Pacific Salt plain-edge, I'm going to get them both!
