Manix2 CPM S110V

14.9 dps? What's the difference between that and 15 dps? Does .1 degrees really make that much difference?

The variability in flatness of most hones is sufficient to eliminate a 0.1-degree precision in establishing an angle even on guided sharpening systems which are not that accurate. As to the theoretical difference in performance should such precision actually be achieved, any reduction in required force to complete a cut would be unnoticeable to most machines not to mention the human hand, and a 0.1-degree change should not be sufficient to noticeably increase/decrease durability of the edge.

I may sit this one out! I've had such back luck with the FRN Spydercos I've purchased recently (Endura Aogami SB, Native Lightweight CTS-XHP, Stretch SB) that I hope they make a G-10 version of this S110V Manix 2. FRN just doesn't like me! :(

All of those models are from seki city japan and the manix 2 light weight is made here in the USA. This may or may not make a difference with the "problems" you have been experiencing with FRN.

Good point. I ordered one from National Knives just now.

Glad I ordered one. It's smooth, blade centered, no blade play, easy one-handed open/close and a nice shade of dark blue on the FRN handles. All good.

Personally, I'd still like to see a version with G-10 and/or CF.

Hmm... the secondary bevel is uneven, most visible at the tip... not that it matters, just obvious from the images. I am arguing with myself about whether to spring for this, the BD-1 Manix2, or neither and be happy with my ZDP CalyIII :p

Correct. The clip side is ground wider than the tip and the non-clip side is the opposite. It doesn't bother me.

I know what you mean. I really like how light mine is, but my Manix 2 s in g10 feel more sturdy. I also like the price and don t want to pay more for the carbon fiber for minimal weight savings over g10. I ll see how well it holds up. (I can t help but think about a comparison with the griptilian which has a similar price.)

I'd love to see a version in CF. Very cool. :)

Didn't know this was coming, but very happy to see it. The FRN Manix design is a definite step up from the Endura / Delica in my book, but I was not at all moved by translucent scales or a BD-1 blade. And very happy to see a regular production rin involving a fancy steel variant. Hopefully the trend will spread to the PM2 in time.

I think this will make a perfect lightweight companion knife to a large fixed blade, and if I can swap out the blade with my cts-xhp Manix, I will probably end up buying two.

x2...the see through combined with BD1 which seems to give abysmal edge retention turned me away from an otherwise great design.

I got my 110V Manix LW today. I like the color, ergos, fit and finish, the finishing on the edge of the blade (even and fully removed the burr). Even the balance is pretty good for such a light knife, and it carries really well. They did a great job with it. It's just a cool knife and I was blown away how cheap it was for such a rare and exotic steel! (I always figured S110V = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!)

(I'd love to see Spyderco shift to S35VN for the Para2 and harden it to around 60.5-61 HRC given it's tougher steel that does well at hardness levels S30 hasn't always done well with...S30 was nice when it came out, but IMHO S35VN is a huge improvement and I can't imagine the cost is that different. A full production M390 option wouldn't be to bad either! Sprint-only models just see prices that go too high even though the Para in the LE steels is a great work knife...but not at the secondary market prices!!!)

I received mine today and it is perfect in every aspect except in that the edge near the choil is slightly oversharpened. Roughly a 1/16th of an inch missing. The bevels are mostly even though and it has an relatively thin edge, as least thin enough for me. It was so close to being perfect!

Carbon fiber would also be sick but the addition of carbon fiber would detract from the amazingly low price this amazing steel is being offered at. Perhaps in the future we'll see some sprint runs.

I also found BD1 to have ridiculously bad edge retention. Not sure if the heat treat was bad on the batch I got, but I always found it amazing how terrible it is on my blue lightweight. Sharpens up super fast and easy though and I still love the knife. Just need to touch it up REALLY often.

I think S30V is decent steel, but I was never overly impressed with it. M390 on the other hand I am extremely impressed with. It's the one steel that really "wowed" me. If they ever make a Paramilitary 3 and Manix 3, it would amazing to see it made with CTS-204p in the production models, which is Carpenters version of M390. I know Spyderco likes to use American steel is their American made production models (and even non American models for that matter) so the Carpenter version would be more likely. However if they decide to upgrade the steel, like in the 2015 model or something, the shift to S35VN would be good. Or even better, CTS-XHP like they did with the Chaparral. Who knows, it could happen. The Chaparral (S30V to XHP), and g10 Manix 2 (154CM to S30V) etc is proof that Spyderco is willing to change the steel in their production models without making an entire new knife.

After multiple sharpenings, I've found CTS-BD1 to be a solid performer, similar to VG-10.

I don't think it was your batch...I sharpened a BD1 LW for a friend and literally ran it through a few pieces of cardboard and that in itself killed the scary sharp edge. A M390 blade could probably do that exact process say 100 times more before seeing that sort of loss in sharp. I think a Delica I have in AUS-6 gives more edge retention. I'm not sure what Spyderco was thinking there given their base VG-10 is a great steel as-is (as was their 154 when they used it.)

And I'm with you on S30V. While not a terrible steel, it never quite lived up to what was claimed of it and so it raises the question if price is justified. Most S30V knives I have are good, but no better than CPM-154 and so it's made me question if a price difference is justifiable. Kershaw has seemed to recently shift a lot of knives from S30V to their Sandvik steels which I think some give almost as good performance and at a very reduced price.

It seems steels like ELMAX, CTS-XHP, and S35VN are the steels that S30V was claimed to be. And while a lot of people say S35VN is not that different from S30V, I think the bump in toughness allows S35VN to see hardness levels that S30V would be more prone to issues with chipping/other damage, so to me S35VN is a nice improvement and more justifiable in price than S30.

I've only been EDCing a M390 knife for a short while, but I too am really impressed by performance, and was surprised how much easier it was to sharpen over other steels that give it's sort of retention/wear resistance. It's definitely a great steel for folders!
