Does anyone have any experience with this company? I was looking at their Cinq model karambit's on e-bay as the price is right they got my attention. Looked up company website and found out they also have lifetime warranty. Big question though are they just chinese junk with a hi-tech design or worth the money?

I have a small keychain knife from the company with a tiny hawkbill blade and a bottle opener/screwdriver. one of the least expensive products they offer. Fit and finish are flawless.

For what it's worth, I can't stand them. They've apparently resolved some of the fit/finish issues that they had last year (abysmal) but their designs, while radical, are impractical for me and I haven't found a single one of their knives that was comfortable to me.

I'd like to see this company grow, but they just aren't interesting to me as they currently stand.

Just my two cents.

CitizenSoldierNY, you should call MANTIS KNIVES USA...I think you'll find MANTIS KNIVES an absolute pleasure to deal with. 714-701-9136, and you're right, the LIFETIME warranty is hard to beat. Just like most other manufacturers (ie Benchmade, Spyderco, Buck) MANTIS KNIVES makes U.S. knives AND Taiwan made knives, but the warranty can't be beat.

Ive got a kerambit 3 and the fit and finish are good but its impposible to open with just one push of the thumb hole its more like two or three or you work your way up its thumb holes either way this takes time which might not be good in all situations.
The framelock is also very thin and i doubt it would hold up to much stress all that said for the money it was a good buy IMO.

Just looked at the martialist and have decided if thier knives are good enough for the US catfish anglers tournament they're good enough for me;)

I haven't reviewed any of the newer offerings from Mantis, but last I got my hands on maybe 12 or 14 of them, which at the time represented the entire product line. They're listed in the reviews section of my website and cover a fairly representative sampling of Mantis' fixed and folding knives.

There's a fillet knife that is, well, a folding fillet knife. Not being much of an angler myself I could only look at it as such. It was a nice fillet knife.

I loved a couple of the smaller folding knives; one of them is in my dresser accessory drawer and does regular duty in my pocket to this day. Overall the line is pretty basic in terms of the construction -- no surprises, really. Some frame locks, some liner locks, one or two rocker-bar locking folders.

Jared West apparently fancies design, and thus the one thing that characterizes the line is stylization -- most commonly, the red circular accents that you see on some of the fixed blades, one or two of the folders, and the kerambits.

I didn't have any problems opening the kerambits, but everyone's hand is different. I also didn't notice any edge-holding problems with the 420HC, but I couldn't speak to variations in heat treat on individual knives.

My opinion, both as a consumer and politically, is neutral toward the company; I paid for the knife samples I received, and thus have no "dog in the fight" where the company's sales are concerned.

In answer to this question, I would not characterize them as Chinese junk, no. The quality is decent at the price point, on par with Taiwanese imports and other knives of that category. Nothing mind-blowing, but decent knives at prices that are at pace with their relative value. The style, I think, is what will attract buyers, and that's a subjective matter of personal taste. Clearly they do have a distinct flavor that unifies the product line stylistically. Whether that's good is up to you, I'd guess.

One thing -- the kerambits are not intended to be drawn into a reverse grip. They're not set up that way and can't be used that way.

Sharp Phil,
First off I like your site , had found it through google search a time or two before , definitely informative. As for Mantis, I have large hands so I wouldn't foresee a problem as for the style it suits me. And not being a large investment if it's not to my liking can always gift it to a brother or friend. Thanks for the in-depth reply.

I like mt TA2 Seymour. Good ergos and keeps a good edge. Dollar for dollar, it woyuld be hard to find something even remotely comparable.

I recently purchased the Mantis karambit model MK-1. (Actually I purchased two!) The two I brought home are excellent. The only problem I found is that there seems to be some quality control issues with the lock-up. The first one I picked up at the Smoky Mtn. Knifeworks had a perfect lock-up but I had to open the boxes of two or three more before I found another one that engaged as well as I wanted. Overall I am very happy with the karambit. It's a nice folding karambit for the money and well worth the $25.99 I paid for it. Not a bad little framelock folder for the money.

Just watch out for the lock up on some of them.

Just watch out for the lock up on some of them.

If you can't trust the lockup on a knife it should be destroyed and disposed of in a safe fashion.

As consumers have we forgotten what the heck we are doing?

I also remember all to well the claims the company made when they first began their ad campaign. ZDP knives, BG42 knives, S30 knives which didn't exist. Then they bacame 420hc when questioned by people looking to buy BG42 and ZDP knives.

Quote from Jared West ( mantis's owner) taken from Phil's site:
"The result is a line of affordable knives of decent quality for the money, including the only brand of knives officially sanctioned by the United States Catfish Anglers Tournament Series. "We're the only company they endorse," Jared states. "We're [also] the only knife company in the world to offer S30V stainless steel on a folder for less than $100.00 [USD]."

The only company in the world to offer a S30V knife for less than $100? Nope, not true, and never has been. Spyderco had the S30V native in stores including Wal mart before mantis even existed. That makes Jared west either ill informed, or a liar. Oh yeah, Buck had the 110 out in S30V by then too. Wait.....so did Kershaw. I could go on, but why?

Yeah, I'm gonna run right out and buy lots of mantis knives. Knives that might injure me because of poor design or quality control from a company with a questionable history. An owner that either lies or doesn't know what he's talking about.

They do look cool after all though. Red accents! Like Homer Simpsons "speed holes" that make a car go faster that's exactly what I need in a knife! ?

I wonder if the catfish like red accents? Joe
