I saw an ugly looking knife in the back of a catalog and thought it looked like something from Starship Troopers.

Anyways the company that makes it is called Mantis.

I went to their website and their knives are actually fairly expensive, and all of them look...well...creative...(wacky).

Are these just novelty items or are they decent knives?

Some are quite expensive.

Mantis has a very bad reputation here.

They have been caught advertising their blade steel as being a premium alloy while producing those knives with mundane alloy instead.

They have also promoted spamming of this site by their "militia".

IMO their designs are without merit.

:D I thought maybe they hired Trekkies or something to design those knives. They appear to be designed only for weird looks.

They say S30V for some of their knives...false advertising?

Is that illegal? Just a crappy tempering job or a different metal altogether?

I don't know about their current materials.

They got busted a couple of years ago.

None the less, I'd buy any other brand instead of Mantis.

I saw some of there new products- a couple of folders...they use 440v insead of some crappy steel, and the blade length is over 2" while the blade thickness is like 1/4"... Anyways they look pretty...normal.
I know they have bad reputation here, but just give it a look.

Once a company proves that it's untrustworthy it's REALLY hard to win back that trust. Seems like a lot of Mantis threads lately. Either their marketing is starting to pay off or a new knife is about to be given away to a "militia member".

A 440V/S60V knife for $43? LOL sure
Yeah, especially after the incidents knarfeng mentioned, that definitely raises a red flag. Maybe somebody at Mantis accidentally typed a 'V' instead of an 'A' after '440' when writing up the spec sheet. :p

Meh 440A/440V, they're both the same premium alloy steel right? ;)

Mantis has managed to produce an american made balisong so hideous and bizarre that I find CCC's more appealing. That deserves some sort of special suck award. If they were full sized I'd probably buy one anyway though I think...

Never cared for the designs at all. Some are simply hideous! But, there is one small folder I am interested in and will probably drop the $43 it cost, just as an experiment...........yeah, expeirment sounds good. Talking about the Pit Boss. I like the steep wharncliffe blade, but like others, doubt that it has CPM-440V as the blade steel.
