I just got a spyderco Native 1 it is a fabulous knife, great design and fits my hand and needs well (have a para military but it is a little too big for my pockets). I can't wait to edc the native, but... when I studied it closely I notice a glint of light on the blade and then noticed what looks like a grind issue (see picture), I know it is a $50 knife and the rest of the knife is beautiful but I want it to be perfect, I got the knife from Great Prairie Knives (great service I got the knife super fast) and I can return it, unfortunately they are now out of stock and I like the knife so much I do not want to send it away!! I guess I can also send it to spyderco, what do you guys think, am I being too picky!
thanks

Yes, I think you are being too picky. (Hey, you asked ;))

It looks like something that will be gone in a sharpening or two. For me, it wouldn't last twenty minutes, but then I probably wouldn't have even noticed it before I sharpened the knife to suit me.

That would bother me. It doesn't look like a grind issue.

Looks to me like someone dinged the blade then returned it. You could sharpen it out, bur I'd return it.

On a $50 knife that's going to be a user I would say sharpen it out.;)

2nd. It looks like the edge got dinged. So what though, it's an edge. It should be sharpened anyway.

I would say if it's going to be a user then just sharpen it, it probably wouldn't be worth the time and effort to return it. If it was a piece for your collection then it might be worth returning

+1 on a manufacturing issue....hard to imagine that as a ding.

As per what to do with it, I could go either way. I hate sharpening knives, myself. Always pay other, more talented people to do it.

Hi Tomdogma,

Sorry for your your dilema. It doesn't look like a grinding glitch, there are no grind marks in the ding.

looks like it was an impact on another piece of metal.

We can fix it, but I don't think it's a manufacturing defect. Our QC people in Golden are very good and they would have seen it.

You can send it back to the dealer. You can send it to us with $5 for shipping back. You can sharpenen it, which I agree would be the easiest choice.

+1 to just sharpening it. Dings happen, and that's a pretty shallow one.

I snagged one of those early $40 Natives from Wally's back in the day, and I noticed that when the blade closed, the edge (just barely) rested against the lockbar's spring, inside the handle. It resulted in repeated edge damage (to a small portion of the edge)... Anyway, make sure that this isn't the cause of your edge damage, since you'll just end up sharpening it out... over and over...and over.

Thanks everyone! in this same order also came a sharpmaker, I am going to watch the video and then go at sharpening it to clean up the glitch. an extra thanks to Sal! with the head of the company taking such personal interest my level of confidence in their products goes way up! I am already debating as to which will be my next spydie...mini Persian??? carbon caly??? rookie sprint??? delica??? mule team (like i need more projects in my life, but it would be a fun one!!) mmm so many cool knives so little extra cash!!!

i am happy now!
I watched the video and then in maybe 10 minutes i cleaned up the edge and now my arm is going bald from me shaving so much hair from it, i just used the 40 degree set up, if i did another series of strokes on the 30 degree set up i guess it will even get "scary" sharp... this is fun!
