Maroon Linen Micarata Bullnose+ others

Can anyone recommend an oil to use on the Bullnose scales? Can I use the same mineral oil on the natural micarta that I use on the blades?

Yes you can use the same mineral oil but its not really needed with micarta unless you just want to make the color pop/look wet. Only the outer layer/threads of the micarta are exposed and get wet. The epoxy/resin used with the layers of material make it solid and pretty impervious and they don't need the care that other natural materials like bone or wood do.

Ok I wasn't sure what to do. I used some 200 grit sandpaper on the scales to make it a little more grippy and it seems to have lost the natural canvas color so I was going to use some oil on the scales to bring the color back. Maybe I'll just leave the scales alone and not use the mineral oil.

The more I carry my natural canvas and od green canvas bullnoses, the darker and dirtier the handles get. To me, the handles look that much better with a worn look!

Yes you get the worn look by carrying the knife and using it, but I'm trying to add more grip to the micarta. I'm going to run out and pick up some 400 grit just to finish it off a little, and give it more of a matte finish than shiny.

I think you can definitely make it grippier with some sandpaper. My guess is that the more you carry and use it the smoother the handles will wear so you may need to scuff it up periodically. Good luck, post some pics when your done!

How is the blade pull on them, on a 1 to 10 scale, and can they be pinched open without much trouble?

I'd say the pull is around a 6, not too loose and not too tight. I only pinch open, never use the nail nick. In fact, out of every bullnose I own there is not one that cannot be opened via the pinch method. It's probably one of the reasons I love the pattern so much, easy to dig out of the pocket and open with out much fines or fuss.

Good to now that even an arthritic old fart can open them easy then. I'm intrigued by the lighter color micarta ones.

Are they a similar size as a Case sodbuster junior? Or the regular size sodbuster?

The main difference is length. It allows for a thong hole.

A bit wider at the butt end too.

A tad thicker but not enough to be noticeable in hand or in the pocket.

Still and all in all a very pocketable and portable knife. I've got quite a soft spot for the Case Sod Buster Jr. but really enjoy the GEC # 71 Bull Nose too.

Trev is right Carl. The pull on the Bull Nose is right at a 6 - very nice and smooth pull but I have to qualify that by saying that my hands and fingers aren't as strong as they used to be (I'm 70) and I do need to use my thumbnail in the nick to open the blade on the Bull Nose knives that I have. I tried on several before I made this post and just couldn't quite pinch them open. Still, they are a pleasure to open and use. I might add that I can't pinch open the Case Sod Buster Jr. sitting on my desk either. Regardless these knives are very very nice.

One other thing. Notice how the spring of the Case Sod Buster Jr. wraps all the way around up to the top of the frame whereas the spring of the GEC Bull Nose does not. Not a big deal - just thought it was worth pointing out.

Here are a couple of pics of a GEC Bullnose with a Queen Country Cousin and a Case Sodbuster jr. They are slighting larger than a Sodbuster jr but much smaller than the full size version.

Wasn't trying to step on your toes Trev. I had those pics available and thought this would be a good opportunity to use them. Besides, they don't call me "ole nimble fingers" for nothing. errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, actually, I've never been called "ole nimble fingers".:)

I can share the love Ole Nimble Fingers:thumbup: It's always nice to see your test run Orange! Did you get the redneck versions and keep it mint or did you use it?

I've just never gotten around to using the Redneck version and I haven't used the test run knife either. If I tried to carry and use every traditional knife I have, I'd probably have to carry a dozen knives in any given pocket and maybe change them out two or three times a day in order to use/carry them all. I just don't have a belt strong enough for that.:)

I have found the perfect belt for you Ed, you'll be able to carry all your knives with you!

:D

I have so many uncarried knives it's frightening!

Great looking in the Maroon. I'm trying to stay out of trouble lately though, so no new knives for awhile here. I do like the sodbusters though. I love my yella CV Jr :)

Great pics everyone.

is it too much to ask for a wood or stag version?

I'd be happy to pay a premium

That's what I like to hear!! I'm all in on wood and stag versions! I even hit them up on their facebook page! Maybe we need some more "request":D

Oh man, I love nice stag. If they come out with a stag bull nose, I very well could bite on that!!!
