SO I see some of you guys know about the coast of NC. Who would be up for a masonboro island recreational camping trip?

Masonboro Island is located near wilmington NC, it is an uninhabited island with lots of camping and could be lots of fun.

You would have to canoe a mile out, and I recommend packing in at least some wood to burn, just in case.

probably a 3 day trip. Who would be up for it?

been there done that.. its a blast but the bugs can be a total beotch. the no see ums mainly. skeeters i can deal but the no seeum's hurt.. i lived in wilmington for a few years, school, women, blah blah.. some foraging and if the tide is right you maybe able to spear some flounder for dinner (need high beam flashlight for night time spearing).. perhaps a homemade crab trap. take or catch some cut bait (clam meat works well). if you guys are fishing take a small container and dig for clams and or mole crabs. the mole crabs are for pomapano (fresh clam as well will catch fish). toss your line into the wave breaks and watch for the light tapping. pompano is some great eating.

I was hoping to make an improvised clam rake but I made need to re-think that.

Joezilla, Im 13. I wont be able to make it this time around. My dad Apparently forgot about this, as when I reminded him about it today, He said hes working on the 7nth, and I dont want to try to go when he is tired. He said if it was a week before, or after he wouldnt be working. That figures.

I'm still in, if work permits. I've been working a second job, some, trying to save a little for the new family member that is on the way. So, we'll see how it swings. However, it sounds like there might be a boat shortage, and if that is the case, you guys probably wont miss another person. Might be grateful for it.

EMT, don't pull out yet! if you do, I may be going solo.
I got three cancellations after that last post.

good! come do it again then! How do you eat mole crabs?

:)

ha! never got that hungry. you mentioned possible fishing so I mentioned a good bait to use that is readily available (though you may have to dig around to find them). I wish I could come but we are taking a week off next week to go with the family to Oak Island, NC and we are going to jamaica for the honeymoon in December so my vacation time is spent.
We didnt camp too primitive when we used to camp there 8-10yrs ago.. Besides I dont know half of what you guys know so it would be nothing but a learning experience (other than the fishing) ;)

Still on:

Meeting time: 10am Friday AUGUST 7
Prerance Rd, Wilmington, NC 28409

Location information: This is a small lot and boat ramp made by the USFWs to facilitate boaters/campers. We will leave our vehicles there for the remainder of the trip and take the boats out. It is advised to take any valuables out before hand. Please look at the Google link to see the parking lot with the boat ramp on the right side.

WHAT TO BRING:
This trip is set on maximum minimalism, so the “can use” tools are one large chopper (bk-9, machete, axe, etc) and one small “neck knife” (Izula, Bk-11, Charlie May Neck knife, etc). Sun block and bug repellent/ head net. Old Bay seasoning.
PSK: a small survival kit full of goodies that you make yourself. Fishing gear, etc.
Boat: if you have one to get out there. I may have other boats available but room is tight on the roof rack. We will be using the boats as makeshift shelters.

Water: There will be at least 10 gallons of water brought out on this trip (its August on the beach). You are strongly advised to improvise your own way of desalinating sea water and avoid the water bag if you can. Challenge yourself!

BACK UP bag: (this bag is categorized as a “just in case bag”. Bring what you would need to keep semi-comfortable. If you take prescription medications or are allergic to bees, etc, you should bring stuff for that too.
Change of clothes, some light food (m&ms, foot with calories), small tarp, cell phone, etc.

THere are only 2 people signed up right now, myself and EMT lee.

I cant believe nobody wants to come hang out with me and Joe. It's going to be fun!

If you can move it to the last weekend in August, I can make it out there!

It's a little late for me to rearrange my schedule to fit with that. No way you cant just come the 7th, 8th, and 9th? Then it would be me, and two moderators! :p

Also, Joe: What are we doing for firewood? From what I've read, there is "little to no" firewood and it's recommended to bring your own. Hmm.

I knew I was going to be in the Raleigh area soon, but I just found out it won't be till the end of August.

Bugger all.
