Massdrop "dropping" knives and EDC gear

the sad part is, amazon is already so ingrained into every facet of the marketplace that you almost can't avoid them...
most brick & mortar stores these days get stock from them, so you're just stuck

specialty stores that only order direct from mfgs are a dying breed

& with the crazy market cap they've managed to build on these last dozen years, they've bought up many supply chains and mid tier stuff that it's like a virus...

perhaps amazon should just be renamed hoover, as they suck up anything that makes $?

No thanks, not giving the 'zon a dime. Jeff Bezos can suck a ....

I have a Gent Select which is a nice little knife. Got it on the exchange though. I have their knife/edc sorter thing and it's great.

Truthfully, they haven't been relative much lately. TBH, took so long for the sorter thing to be in stock, I forgot I bought and it showed up four months later. Great surprise! Lol.

Every once in a while, Massdrop had a fun exclusive product or a great price. It was cool but I did have some issues dealing with them. For instance, I got in on a couple of "drops" only to have them mess up and not have enough product to fulfill my order. In at least one case, they weren't the only place to order but they had the best price. Having taken a month to finally let me know why I wasn't getting my order, I missed out entirely on the product.

Now that I think back, I'm not sure I've really loved anything from them since they dropped the "Mass". Now I guess I can "Drop" them from my bookmarks and unsubscribe to their emails.

I bought a few belts though MassDrop. Good belts. I’d do it again.

I bought a couple of knives from them. I regret doing so as it’s a testament of me falling for market hype.

I bought a flashlight from them about 3 years ago that I still carry everyday. Tough little guy, has survived many falls and a 3 week extended stay under the snow in my driveway.
Never bought any of their knives.

Bought an AD-15 at an interesting price, but the knife came with a dented blade. As I am not living in the US, I didn't even bother contacting Drop customer service. Also bought a few EDC related items which were flawless, especially a Maratac flashlight which is aging beautifully.

Unfortunately, with the MAP policy, they were essentially selling Spyderco knives at the same price as the other retailers, but with a 2 months delivery time.

I got a Glow in the Dark EDC Forums Mannix that I"ll guess was an over run at a great price and then I got the Super Gold Endura at an OK price. Comparable to the other FRN Exclusives.

But they were mostly an impulse buy spot for me if I saw something I didn't know I needed.

All the time their prices have been edging up and their 3-6 month delivery window undesirable. I started comparing them to Amazon (which is pretty expensive in Canada) and they were mostly within +/- $5 or so but on Amazon the shipping was free vs. their fairly high charges and way faster. I did not order from either, I just compared the out the door prices and delivery and that doesn't even entertain the possibility you would need to arrange a return.

I would be willing to guess that they took a few baths on their Drop gear like that watch they presold and maybe some of the other gear that was forever in the coming soon. So they decided to shrink the business to some small easy items they know they can preorder once enough buyers pre-pay. Just like the small knife companies that do this eventually someone gets burned.

They're not getting out of the knife/EDC business, they're just not using the "drop" system with them anymore. Instead of taking preorders and estimating lead times, which pissed a lot of people off in the past as their estimates are often months off, they're making the runs and then listing them on Amazon as in-stock and ready to ship. To me that makes more sense than the business model they used before.

I believe that’s only for existing designs. As I understand it, there will be no new designs or collaborations.
