having received my Reg Lge Sebbie about 6 weeks ago, i was nothing short and amazed at the sheer quality of not only the aesthetics, but feel, use alignment of every working bit!
anyway i wanted a Small Sebbie but for some stupid F****** reason i purchased a Strider PT drop point.
Let me say ,anyone out there that has even the slightest knowledge of cuttlery would have to agree that you can't compare the Sebbie with the Pt.
Firstly the blade does not even centre on the Strider when you close it.
I mean there is play on the blade when in the lock position..
Anyway i live in Australia and with all the taxes and import duties associated with bringing in knives, i have come to the complete conclusion that i just wasted A$380..
so now begins the journey of getting the cash for a small Sebbie...
Leaning towards a Small Reg....
Any comments would be appreciated....

Hello kostak.

There seems to be a terrific problem with blade play on a lot of Striders as well as a off set blade when closed. However, there are lots of good ones, too. A matter of bad luck, but as an earlier thread stated - when you pay that sort of money, there sould not be any such risk.
I have read several threads where they have this fault, but the good news is that the firm will fix the knife .... but that is still an inconvience where you are located.
Hopefully you'll be able to get a small sebby soon and forget the bad experience !

We all live and learn :grumpy:

Hexagraph,
i am not even going to bother sending it back for 'repair', because i believe they cant make it any better.
For that type of cash , well CRK is the benchmark..
Anyway i am going to throw it in the bottom of the draw, with the other junk...

Hi kostak,

I see that you're a bit upset about it .... so would I be

BUT, I'm damned if i'd let them off with it, at least shoot an email or fax to them

I hope that the upcoming small sebbie is a good one, you deserve a good break after this :)

Good luck anyways ;)

I have a couple of thoughts for you.

I too bought a PT recently, and even though my expectations where dulled by previous experience with Striders, l was still disapointed.

It sounds like yours had the same problem mine had, essentially the pivot had been left loose probably to have accepatble opening ease. My suggestion is this, go ahead and use the knife hard, (as long as you're not testing the lock). Get a pivot adjustment tool from Peter Atwood. When you get the tool, tighten the pivot, lube, use, etc. I have read where they supposedly have to "break" in.

You got a bad PT! My first PT rattled, I sent it back to Strider, and they sent me another new one. MY PT is rock solid, no blade play, and it is dead center closed!!I would encourage you to send your PT back to Strider!! The PT is an awesome, awesome knife!! I am sorry you got a bad one. STRIDER WILL MAKE IT RIGHT!

I traded my Sebbie for a Strider SNG, and I do not regret it!!

Send it into Strider. Check my profile. I list that I own one a SMF model. Strider will make it right for you. Just contact striderguys and they will ask you to send it in.

You'll have a centered and easier opening blade. I lurk here all the time, because I want a CRK fixed blade. I just can't decide which one.

Kostak, was that your thread on KnifeForums? If you have blade play on the locked position you probably got a bad PT. My PT didn't have that. As I posted on KF, I've just took mine PT apart, cleaned it, lubed it, and tighnted the pivot just a bit more. It's centered now and the slight gap between a washer and a scale is gone. I have to confess that the PT feels just a bit more solid then my small Sebbie  I also find it easier to open then the small classic Sebenza. Fit & finish of the Sebenza can not be compared to the PT (or most other production knives). And one of the good things about a Sebbie is that your 99.9999% sure you'll get a perfect knife from the factory. ( and no worries about pivot tension also...)

The sad thing is that you shouldn't have to send brand new knives back. And while it is great that Strider will fix it it should have never left the factory like that. Also, what if this person was in the Sandbox or in Australia like this person? They should be punished for where they live/operate? IMHO Striders QC needs MUCH improvement, I just figure their knives cost another $40 - $50 on top of the real cost for shipping them back and whatnot when new.
I mentioned this to the Striderguys and they waived the shipping on my last knife but then again I haven't seen the knife again yet either. I know they are super busy right now but to me the products that were already sold should take precidence over new/future sales.

And don't get me wrong, if you luck out with a good new one or get one after it's been fixed they are definately excellent tools but at this price point it shouldn't be like this.

my .02,

oil

btw. I've never had to send a CRK back unless it was for a refurb or sharpening.

I have also wondered why the dealers let these out the door. There where two chances to catch the problems.

I'm wondering now if the "good" PTs sell for $300 and the ones not so good dealers let go for $250.

I too was planning to get the Strider PT but was very concerned of their craptastic quality control. That garbage about if you send it back, they'll make it right? You should NOT have be do that in the first place. They should get it right the first time! I've tried over the years to find a knife that was better in terms of fit and finish, attention to detail, and quality craftsmanship than the Sebenza, but have not found it. Some come close but they can never match the sebenza. Striders are 90% hype, 10% Knife anyway. There I said it! :p

FWIW......I recently bought 2 PTs from one of their larger, better known dealers at a reasonably discounted price. One of the two had the adjustment screw so loose I could turn it easily with my fingers and the blade was not centered when closed. Disassembly, lubing with Militec and reassembly (including setting the pivot tension) brought everything into line. Not having any LocTite handy I shot a little Elmer's Glue down into the spanner nut to cover the pivot screw end, let 'er dry and all is well!
The 2nd PT was in a similar condition only the pivot screw was much tighter. I repeated the process but stopped short of locking the pivot tension as I offered it as a gift to my son who just got back from his fourth trip to the sandbox and will let him set it up as he sees fit when I get to give it to him.
Other than those issues I've mentioned, the fit, finish, sharpness, grinds were excellent and I'd highly recommend the PT as a small EDC:thumbup: .

Larry, I can understand liking them, but you've provided even more anecdotal evidence that their quality control as quite poor.

Personally when I buy a new knife , especially for $250 oe $300, I rather prefer that it's correct, right out of the box.

Why is a Strider bitch session being hosted in this forum?

If you want to discuss the positive aspects of the small sebenza, go for it. I own one and bought my son one in celebration of his first communion. Excellent work knife, and I think highly of the maker. I would recommend them.

That's a good point, you could notify COugar or Gus and have this moved to GBU.

I echo these Sebenza comments also......I own 2 plus an Mnandi and a Green Beret. I only meant to show the "problems" of my PTs were easily attributed to human error and easily corrected. The Reeve organization without a doubt turns out a more "consistently correct" product and at least part of the difference may lie in Strider's push to fill military orders.
The 2 companies cannot be compared on an equal basis, as others here have stated earlier. Apples to oranges.........

Just break the damned thing and get another, keep doing it until you get one thats right. Maybe they will start to do some decent QC when they see their profits start to fall.

Striders don't come in left hand versions. I asked at their booth at a knife show if I could even order a specially made lefty and the response I got wasn't very encouraging. Plus I'm too used to Sebenzas and the Sebbies fit my lifestyle more versus the more militaristic Strider. So I'll just sit on the sudelines for this one.

I have a townhome near Newhope and Garden Grove Blvd. I gotta get a house with a bigger yard to shoot my pellet gun in and to practice with my knives and swords. I list "LA area" because I work in a Los Angeles ER. Hope to bump into a fellow knife fan someday.
