Masters Of Defense knives

The folder is NOT a Blackhawk MOD. It is a US made CQC mark 1 auto.

Originals before Blackhawk. I got them brand new in Summer 2005.

After taking those pictures I realized they needed to be cleaned. Washed with detergent and tap water, dried and lubed. They look much better now! Function was always smooth sans the dirty looks.

I'm trying to figure out exactly when MOD went out of business....hope someone knows.

I was thinking both of the pics you two submitted contained a Hornet, yours original, the auto with a belt cutter a Blackhawk. Guess I was wrong, they must be two different models.

Sorry...didn't realize they made them with the belt cutter. Thought that was a Blackhawk modification.
Na man, it's all good. The mod mark 1 and 2 both were avaliable in auto with belt cutters.

I know there were still MOD knives being made in North Carolina in 2008.

There were A LOT of different renditions of the MK I...but I'm unaware of the MK II being available with a seat belt cutter...got pics?

No pics, I could probably snap one next time I am at my wife's parents house. The mark 2 with the belt cutter also came with a hard plastic sheath that held the knife while closed, unlike the hard sheath for the mark 1 that held the knife while open like a fixed blade.

I am friends with a guy who has documented a significant amount of their knives...it would be awesome to get a pic to show him, when you get a chance.

Yeah guys....I'm just confused on when the original company went out of business. That's what I need to find out.

I keep seeing all these MODS that look like they are the Black Hawks. I just don't know how to date them. I was under the impression the ones with the belt cutters were Black Hawk era until NCCNC informed me otherwise.

It could be that the auto line had a lot of variants. I'm primarily familiar with only about five or six of their manuals.

I wonder what the ID characteristics of the original MOD's would be.

I will get some solid info for you early next week as to when the knives left the USA, or were sold out to blackhawk.

I'd like to know whatever you can find out about em. That would be great.

A few on mine. My father in law was the GM of the machine shop that made them. He has multiples of every blade they made NIB. It is quite the MOD collection. Some of the fixed blades are VERY nice. Notice the Harkins triton was mis stamped, which made it a second.

Hey NCCNC, dropped by to see if you'd posted that info yet....

Saw your MOD Harkins Triton pic again....I've posted about my Tekna Ocean Edge dive knife here recently, mentioning that I've always thought it was the perfect OTF blade profile. Your Triton blade has always been the closest thing to it out there. I plan to find one soon.

Hope you make it back with the MOD info. I'd really like to have more on them. I'll check back.....

I have been collecting and researching MOD for a while now and can maybe answer a few questions I've read on here. MOD started in 1998 with 5 original models and was later acquired by BPG in November 2003. There is no such thing as a Mark II with a seat belt cutter although early model Mark I and IIs did not have a window breaker. I have quite a collection and a few for sale. I will post some pics later.

Thank you for the info. I needed to know the timeframe of the original company so I can sort out the "real" ones from the "other" ones.

What caused the confusion on the Mark was that it's sometimes hard to pin down whether a model is an ORIGINAL MOD or one manufactured by a later owner of the name. Huge difference in quality IMO. Usually I can pick off the later ones by sight, as was the case on the Mark, but not always.

Nice collection by the way. I had just posted on a "grail" thread that I would love to own the MOD Collectors Boxed Set Ltd. Edition Numbered. It contains five of their knives, probably the five you mentioned they opened with. I have the Point Man out of one of those sets and I want the others now.

Hope you return with pics of your collection.

EDIT: The original Masters of Defense has to be the most elusive knife comany in history. :glee: Now I wonder if the original company only made the original five models---those in the collectors set---and the slew of models out there now were made by others after acquiring the original company.

You mentioned you had "researched" the company some. Any links you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

I work with several guys that machined MOD knives for years. I don't know where they were originally made, but for years the entire line was made in asheville nc in a machine shop called turnamics. My wife's father came on as GM there in 2005 and they were already in full swing producing all the knives in MODs lineup. Turnamics is still in business, and you could probably call and ask them more specific questions if you had any. They make I-9 bike wheels now. The pawn shops around here have lots and lots of them collecting dust, simply because they made them out of the factory as seconds or whatnot.

Sorry didn't know about the "no sales" allowed I only sighed up are reading the forum. I do have some links from Laura Burgress PR contact for BPG on the December 2004-2005 line which I would consider a collaboration of the two companies and not "true" originals although the quality is still there. I have personally spoke with Laura regarding other MOD matters as part of my research. Pics coming soon. http://www.policeone.com/news/94232-blackhawk-s-masters-of-defense-knives-for-2005

Thanks, Jon. Great info; first thing like that I've seen. So the original company ran '98 - 11/03.

Still want to see the pics.

Here is another link to what I believe is one of the earliest if not the first few Ladyhawks I personally have ever seen for sale or even pictured for that matter. Zoom in on the blade markings. The business name is printed out LLC and dated 1/98, the inside of logo is bare and the blade material is ATS-34 and not 154CM like on all my other models. I've never seen another one with markings like this and I own a Trident marked #2. https://www.arizonacustomknives.com.../Masters-of-Defense.aspx?product-listing.aspx Here is another link on the buyout by BPG http://www.tactical-life.com/tactical-knives/seven-supreme-sequels/ Now can anyone tell me how to load my awesome pics?

Jon, no problem on the mistakes. It happens to all of us and there are no hard feelings on anyone's behalf.
As for pictures the best way to load them is to use imgur.com, upload them, and paste the "BB Code" link it will provide. Let me know if I can help.
