Match cases

I've got one of those standard brass match cases right now, that the top screws down on over the body. I like it, but I've had to glue the rubber seal back to the top a couple of times.

I know about the KM stuff, but it's not my price point right now. Has anyone used these? Thinking of including one or two with my next order...

I also use one of those larger orange plastic ones with pleasing results, but it is sometimes a little bulky for pocket carry. Not sure how big those would be.

i use a Silva compas/ match case that is made of solid aluminum. i own two of them, both are in different survival kits. they run between $12 - $16 at several sporting goods stores.

I am not sure what you mean about large orange ones, but I use prescription pill bottles. The orange ones with the child proof tops. They are waterproof, small, and see-through.

I think the orange safes he is referring to are the Chinese-China-Mart copies of the OD Green, USGI Match Safe. I have both, and the K & M and the Silva above...and some more...they'll come in handy with the book pending and all. :D

Don, weren't you going to do a review of some match cases?

Yeah, I was and probably will in one way or another. But I am also writing a book with my Brother about all of this stuff... I don't think you can beat the K&M really, I ordered the one that is longer for the REI matches which are also excellent. After that, I like the Silva then the standard USGI plastic matchsafe... The old Marbles and Ever-Dry don't usually get the respect that they deserve, either.

Just something to think about. I attended a survival school up in Vermont around 18 years ago run by Ron Hardt. He liked the plastic match cases, his reason being, if you're behind the eight ball, and already suffering from hypothermia, you may not be able to unscrew the top of a match case. He stated that with the plastic case, you could just smash it open with a rock, if you had to.

Thats whats nice about K&M, there are no threads. The top is like a plug with two o-rings for seal, held in by friction. You just twist to get it off.

+1 for K&M

Actually I keep my REI waterproof matches in a K&M case AND then also carry a cheap orange plastic case from Campmor to carry the regular strike-anywhere matches I use to light my Coleman lantern.

At some point I should dunk both cases and see what happens.

I have a Silva and it works well, but it isn't long enough for the NATO style matches (REI has the best). I just use it for regular strike anywhere matches.

Someone asked about the anodized aluminum match safes in the photo at http://campingsurvival.com/lmalma.html . They are too short and can be hard to open, but they are light and strong and use a replaceable o-ring seal.. I got one at Bob Wards Sporting Goods in Missoula.

The orange plastic ones seem to work just fine for strike-anywhere type matches.

The K&M is longer and can use the NATO style matches. I like buying quality small business products when I can. Definitely on my wish list.

I have an old Marbles swing open case and my old boy scout match case. That's what I use and love.

I'm ashamed to say I've generally used plastic film cannisters - Probably getting hard to get hold of these days though! :D

I went to WalMart some time ago and asked the girl behind the photo center counter if I could have a few 35mm film canisters. She asked "how many?" and I said as many as she could give me. Came home with over a 100. :D Figured I better stock up as digital photography will make them obsolete in the next few years.

But, +1 for the K&M!!! love mine.

Bargain! :D

I must do the same, they come in handy for all kinds of things.

I have the plastic match case and few pill bottles. They hold more matches and some paper to strik on that i cut of match boxes. To make sure they last longer i got in there some of the packages that absorb moister. I found that keeps the matches longer. Last time i counted i had 34 strike anywhere matches in one bottle.

Have you tried coating the heads of the strike anywhere matches with nail varnish?

(Sound of Grandma sucking eggs somewhere!)
