been carrying my user matriarch some this week, they used to be very popular and now since they are disco'd ya never hear a peep about 'em any more, anyone else ever carry one anymore?

i guess they are kinda rare nowadays.

They are indeed rare and snapped up quickly on the 2ndary market.

I guess there were never that many made in the first place.

Proud to say it was a South African motivated product! ;)

Hey Sifu1A? Which Matriarch do you have? Is it the ATS-55 or the VG-10?

The VG-10 is the rarest. I'm not for sure how many of the VG-10 units they made but I've seen many more ATS-55 models by far. I've only ever had 2 of the VG-10 models and I refuse to let go of the one I have now.

Don't get me wrong because I would go to great lenths to even get an ATS-55 model for a backup unit.

Personally I like the Matriarch much better than I do the Civilian. I would love a Matriarch with a G-10 handle. Great thread.

There was from what I was previously told a special batch of gray handled Matriarchs that I heard were sent to be sold in South Africa. I've had 2 of the Gray handled units during my trading days and both were ATS-55 blades.

I've owned 2 plain edge Civilians in my days. But I'm not sure if a plain edged Matriarch even exists? Sure would like to know more about both stories.

Mine sits in the drawer in all it's relative VG-10 rarity.

I appreciate the highly specialised design and it is kind of "grim cool" but no I don't carry it. Our lawmakers take great objection to such practice.

Don't think there ever was a plain edge matriarch.
I don't think there ever was either unless it might have been a prototype or a demo model.

With all the people who have a virulent hatred of serrations I would offer every model of Spyderco blades in PE.

I am a serration fan and I particularly like every Hawkbill in SE and the Matriarch is no exception.

The Matriarch to me has several advantages over the Civilian model. Now I'm in no way disparaging the Civilian model because I love it dearly. However having a large to average sized hand the Matriarch fits me much better than the Civi and I truly would feel more comfortable in a self defense situation.

I do hope we'll see a day when they either do a sprint run with the Matriarch with either a G-10 or CF handle and a ZDP-189 or M-4 blade.

It's not bad with an FRN handle. I wouldn't give up my VG-10 Matriarch even if they did come out with a new one. The Matriarch is truly one of about 8 Spyders I can think of that truly fell through the cracks.

With that being said I think it's one of 8 Spyders I can name off that truly deserve at least a sprint run if not a reintroduction on a limited basis. I like the Matriarch to be sure.

I've always wanted one, never was fast enought to snag one though! The new series of hawkbills in the Salt line should fill the niche in well enough though.

Trust me the H-1 Spyderhawk that was just released is a fantastic Hawkbill. I have the original VG-10 version of it and I can't wait to get both the H-1 versions PE & SE.

There just seem to be dozens if not hundreds of Spyderco fans who I'm sure would by a sprint run or re-intro'd Matriarch.

Spyderco's Hawkbills are eons ahead of anyone who is even a distant second. The Matriarch and Civilian both are literally unequaled in the production knife world. Even the folks who have literally stolen the design of the Civi don't make a very good imitation of it.

Matriarch.... the one that got away :(

Got a Civilian, but I never carry it. Would carry the Matriarch if I could find one in SA.

I have a matriarch that I carry regularly, but have never had to use :) Still have the factory edge.

IMHO, much better knife than the civilian because of the lighter weght.

They did not sell well at the end of their life and were discounted some places.

i have mine and love it. i alternate between civi and matri all the time. my matriarch is FLAWLESS. I bought it when i was younger and put it in a closte and forgot about it.....that and the origonal fs tasman salt with the same black frn handle

It's got to come back>> it just absolutely has to come back to the main line up. A G-10 handle, Exotic super steel blade and a palladium Spydie on the handle scales.

Let's get the ball rolling like the H-1 Spyderhawk idea took off

Do it man! Make it your mission..... I love that Endura 3 handle shape and I would love one. Spyderco forums is yr best bet. ;)

FrankKi>> Vincent Van Gogh couldn't have painted a better portrait than the one you just put up. What a magnificent scene of metallurgical beauty  You Sir have great, well refined tastes in blades and the architecture thereof.

As I said on an earlier post>> This knife just has to come back. This would truly be a slam dunk in the "SD" community. What a splendid blade
