matriarch

I would prefer some other color than orange...dark green, dark blue, camo...but i'd probably buy one or 3 in any color.

All Right Already!!!!! All Right we'll forget the Orange handle :D It was only a possible suggestion for a Christmas collector's set anyway. And I did think that it might be a good idea for people who work in the timber, jungle or wetlands like I've done in the past. But we'll forget that one :o

But I do want some kind of a G-10 handle. Or if we have to do it with FRN I would like it made really grippy and tacky for better overall grip. VG-10 Steel would be fine but I'm not opposed to ZDP-189, D-2, S90V or maybe some other super steel. But I'm very content with my own personal VG-10 Matriarch. I would love a belt sheath to go with it as well.

This knife was such a great overall design for many reasons. Now I respect the Civilian highly. But for my hand size, the weight of the knife and the ease of handling I do prefer the Matriarch. WE just can't let this one die. So let's sort out our disagreements and see what we can agree on shall we? :)

I really don't understand how any of you can say a matriarch is better then a civilian. I mean the only thing possibly you might be able to say anything about is the weight and that is neglible when your talking about a knife which is just a bit shorter and i say neglibly thinner (I have very small hands but I can still hang on to a civilian without a problem). It really isn't all that much smaller but in a self defence situation, every last mm will help you. I personnaly own 2 civilian and wouldn't trade either for a matriarch. I think of it as sorta like saying your penis is too long and you gotta cut it shorter for some odd reason. It's not like you'd really use both for anything else but self defence.

well one definite pro for the mat' in the mat' vs civvy' debate is the mat' was priced quite a bit lower, at least when the mat' was in production, like $60 or so vs $150 or so.

would the small amount of blade length make a real make or break difference in a SD scenario? ya win with the civvy/lose with the mat? i for one seriously doubt it.

most folks would probably be like me and own both anyway lol.

FWIW i wouldnt swap my grey matriarch for your civvys lol, of course that really doesnt have much to do with anything though.

i dont think anyone is saying one is better than the other, just that one is a lower priced (or was) decent alternative to the other,

handle ergo's are a very subjective thing, just because "X" likes "Y" doesnt mean "Z" will.

i wont even get into the cutting of penis's lol, leave me outta that one.

Come on guys we could get into a "Ford vs Chevy" type of discussion as to whether or not the Civialian is better or the Matriarch is better. But the bottom line is what you, The End Line User likes the best.

Hey I love both models. And if I didn't have a Matriarch to use for SD I would have a Civi in it's place. That would truly be my #2 pick out of the entire knife world. And that's just how close and thin my preference is over the Civilian. So please folks we can reason together.

Both reverse S blades are truly a force to be reckoned with. To say it would be worse to be cut by a Matriarch than to be cut by a Civilian is about the same as wondering how bad it would be to drive off a cliff doing 80mph or 90mph. The end result is the same irrespective of which model you gravitate toward.

Both blades are great designs. Both are Spyderco's finest SD blades. And I truly appreciate both blades. But the Matriarch just feels a little more comfortable in my hand. Hey I'm for improving both of them if that's possible. So what is wrong with that? I would even be content to stay with a FRN handle even though I like G-10 slightly better. Really there's nothing to be at odds about.

really nice pics here especially the "business" pov lol

So is the Matriarch just the older version of the Civilian?
Just different materials?

Oh no! the Civilian had been in the line up for a long time before they ever made the Matriarch. The Civilian has been around since the GIN-1 blade steel era and that goes back a long ways.

There is a story behind the Matriarch and I wish that Sal or one of the Spyderco factory people would step in and tell us the story. There is a connection between Spyderco and some folks they knew over in South Africa. I had heard that most of the gray Matriarchs were all supposed to go to South Africa. I only got bits and pieces of that story so I'm not 100% sure what transpired there.

The Matriarch has only been around since the ATS-55 era. And most of your Matriarchs are ATS-55>> the VG-10 versions are considerably more rare and more highly sought after.

IIRC there was (or is) a lot of women getting assaulted/raped in south africa and the mat was designed a a low cost SD weapon for SA women, for some reason or another the originals had grey FRN IIRC, and also IIRC spydie made a run of them with grey handles for bladeforums members, a BF special edition, i think thats how it went anyway, if someone remebers for sure chime in, its been a while now, but it sure seems like the made a BF run of 'em.

the civvy is probably 10 yrs older than a mat.

I would imagine the cost factor was a major reason for the initial motivation to get it made.... the Civilian is seen as a high end knife out here and dealers charge like wounded buffaloes for one.

That's the first I've heard of the Bladeforums connection with the Matriarch but it could be true. I used to have 2 blue Spyderco plain edged, VG10 Spyderhawk models that were both Bladeforums special editions and the 2 I had even had a collector number on them. I believe that there were like 300 or so made for that purpose.

Also they have a blue handled Spyderco Native model that was a Bladeforums edition. But I must admit that this is the first I've heard about the Matriarch being a Bladeforums special edition. I don't doubt it though because BF and Spyderco seem to have a good working relationship with each other.

Like I said I wish one of the Spyderco factory people would come in and explain what the connection was with the Matriarch and the Knifemakers or merchants of South Africa.

i might not be remembering right but it sure seems like there was a BF mat w/the grey handles, 2 or 300, something like that, back in '00 or maybe even '99.

i've been around here a while though and have seen a lotta different models/options/special editions/etc so its easy to get confused, but i sure seem to remember that 1.

It's time for a Sprint Run of a new Matriarch. I would like to see it with a G-10 handle and hopefully a thicker laminated blade that could also be used for utility as well as self defense. This could be a huge marketing tool for Spyderco's great line up of Hawkbills.

Everyone I know that either owns or has owned a Matriarch loves it. This model doesn't compete with the Civilian; it compliments it. I hope you all agree.

Everybody say AMEN! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::D

Ive had a Matriarch VG-10 as a day to day carry for years. I never actually realized that it was discontinued. I hope to get a new clip for it and and find a nice place to store it.

it will get replaced with a Civilian this year ;)

A sprint run would be a good thing...

Where did this come from? "You don't have to wipe your feces everywhere Mr. Brownpoo." WTF???

But I see JDS' post clued me in.

An oxymoron has nothing to do with morons. Look up the word it means: oxymoron (òk´sê-môr´òn´, -mor´-) noun A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.

IMHO the top of a orange knife sticking out of my pocket is not very concealed. For a concealed weapon to be bright orange is "contradictory" by nature, thus an oxymoron.

JDS or amen74, are you adult enough to apologize for your failure to know an elementary school vocabulary word? Although, possibly english is a second language for you both.

Still no reason to be insulting.

I wonder if a CF handle would be close to the weight of the FRN?

I'd have to buy one of both.

Spyderco has a modest offering for 2010. There will be a larger version of the Honeybee and Bug called the Grasshopper. Second half of the year there will be a large leaf blade folder in a Super Hawk frame. The Matriarch – a smaller Civilian style folder- will return as a sprint run with a brown Zytel handle with only 800 offered in each of plain and serrated. They will have the Endura and the Delica released with a variety of handle colors including green, purple, blue, gray, red and brown, and the grind will be fully flat. They will also offer the UK pen knife as a lightweight model also in a variety of colors and two blade styles. There will be a fully serrated sheepsfoot rescue model. Also a titanium and a carbon fiber offering. The Bifold will come out and will be treated as an auto. The blue Manix that will be coming with the flat ground S30V blade and skeletonized liners that greatly reduce the weight. It will have a heftier price tag as well. A sprint run of a Tim Zoada will be coming with VG10 steel, 4220 MSRP, carbon fiber handle, double liners and 1200 pieces. Jason Breendon designed folder with a very off Pterodactyl looking blade with a 1? section on top of the blade that looks like it should be sharpened, but isn’t and a slightly curved cutting edge almost Ulu style. Very odd! VG10 steel and shipping mid year. An extra large Lum Chinese folder with a “peel ply” carbon fiber handle which has a very smooth finish and VG10 steel blades. These are being made in Japan.
