Maxpedition Experience?

A bag slung from right shoulder to left hip, lets say, works fine. You can slide the bag behind you a bit for hiking. I'll use a fatboy or similar for Disneyworld, the zoo, etc. where there is a lot of walking, and it works well.

But a "real" backpack like a pygmy falcon II with 2 shoulder straps and a belly strap is optimal. It distributes the pack on 2 shoulders and does not flop around or slide. The pygmy falcon II is a nice smallish pack but still plenty room for hikes.

Seems like I own half of the Maxpedition lineup. Every time I am jonesing for a new toy, I get another Maxpedition.

Got for each of my boys a condor II for use as a school backpack. Spendy, but should last a good long while. I've never seen a Maxpedition wear out, though I'm sure its possible.

how does the versipack ride when you walk?
Is it wobbly, or constantly shifting? That would be a major turn off.

that was one thing i didn't like about the bag. you have to adjust it high so it doesn't hit your hip. if not it will bounce and wobble when you walk. i find myself putting the bag so it sits on my back instead of my front or side. again- i'm a girl so i have to constantly adjust it b/c the strap kind smooshes me.

Thanks you all for the quick responses!

Horndog, Jetblack and Stormstaff, how does the versipack ride when you walk?

Also I'm curious what you think is the advantage of carrying a bag with only one sling instead of two shoulderstraps.

Thanks in advance! ;)

I havnt had any problem with my fatboy shifting, its pretty stable.

Hi,

I did a little more research and found the Sitka.
Just saw an excellent review of it on Maxpedition's site and I think this bag is just what I need.
Any objections or remarks? :D

Greetings,

Sitka is an excellent bag so long as your don't overload it. It rides better than the lunada/malaga packs due to the way the strap is setup and that it is longer overall causing the small of your back to take some of the load.
The Jumbo versipack can be pushed off to the small of your back and rides quite well. If your real active wearing it, you can use a mini-bunge cord run from the pack to a belt loop to hold it back there.
With any one strap pack, your going to feel the weight if you overload.
If your going out on a multi-day hike, IMO, wear a traditional backpack with two straps.

About knife carry with one strap packs.... I have crossdraw sheath setups on my hiking blades. Never gets in the way and easy access.

I like their designs but my experience hasn't been that great quality wise. I had a Condor II when it first came out. It worked fine for a while but then the main zipper did that annoying this where it comes apart by itself after it was zipped. I couldn't fix it and had to send it back.

I also had a Jumbo Fatboy when it first came out and the main buckle would not latch properly. It would come apart with only a slight tug.

The customer service was great, I sent both bags back and they replaced them really fast with no hassle. Maybe I was a victim of early to market products, I don't see much complaining about their quality so I just probably had some bad luck. I would give them a try again if there was something else I wanted.

I've had a Pygmy Falcon II for a while now and it works pretty well. I use it a lot for dayhikes, hunting, and fishing. I'll even use it for overnight trips when I'm going to somebody's place, a cabin, or other shelter of some sort. It's not huge, but if you pack smart you can get a pretty good batch of stuff in it. Built pretty well too.

My dear, whatever do you mean???:D:D:o:p

J/k, my wife has the same.....concerns;)

there's just no good way to wear it. you put the strap to the side and you smoosh one. you put the strap in the middle and they just scream "HERE WE ARE!!!!" i just can't win. and pack packs are no better b/c then both get smooshed. kelty has a pack for woman but i don't always need something that huge.

You could try an ALICE pack. The pack straps are wider apart than most civilian packs for wearing over body armor, and on most people they ride kind of outboard on the shoulders, so they may miss your squeezers.

Although I really don't see the problem with the strap down the middle "Here we are!" thing.

I have a colossus with a water bottle holder and an M1 that I'm using for a F.A.K. and I don't find it uncomfortable nor do I find it shifting or wobbly. It works great for walks, ball games, etc. because you can quickly access your stuff without removing the bag. Now if I'm going long distances or carrying a bunch of heavy stuff, I switch over to my Condor II.

A strap down the middle on a cold morning ... Nothing like saying "Here we are and we've got our "High Beams" on.

I digress, here is a photo of my Colossus setup.

Nice bag. Can you take a pic with it on for scale? Or on your old lady for effect :)
How do you think it would move on a bike? Probably to much?? I may as well just buy 3 bags. One for each purpose. And so each Rat can have it's own bag :)

Really? Doesn't move when riding moderate -fast?? I like the Colossus the best because of all the compartments and just need something small. The Pygmy is a small pack looks nice but lacks the compartments. I know I will end up with both. :(:)

i never had any issues with it. i don't ride much anymore since i got my gym membership.

Well now, you just found a "nitch" market, so start designing! :)

MrsCoffee has the same issues with a couple of the monostrap packs I have, so I revamped a Nike pack so that the one strap goes top to bottom, on the shoulder, and clips to the waist strap down low. Will have to see if I can find it, it was an easy mod.
