Maxpedition Falcon II Question

Damn, that's flippin' sweet brother. Fits excellent. What ya gonna put in the proteus?

Don't know yet. I'd hoped my Hennessy Hammock would fit the bigger compartment, but it won't.
I can get my Jetboil into the larger compartment, but I really don't like having it at the base of the pack.
I think I may just use that bigger Proteus section for a change of clothes. Rolled pants, shirt, and extra socks.

This rig is really only for warmer overnights. I cannot get my down bag anywhere in the pack and would need to strap it to the outside.
I have larger packs better suited for colder weather overnighters--a Kelty Morraine (3600 cu in) and a Gregory Keeler (4800 cu in).

I got bit by the Maxpedition bug here recently so I put together a little setup that I mainly use for a BOB, but can also be used for camping.

Condor II
F.I.G.H.T. medical pouch
M1
10x4 bottle holder
Compass pouch
Med roly poly...for just in case.

Maxpedition makes a great product.

I have a large ALICE if I need something bigger.

I have a change of clothes in my Falcon II. I was thinking of putting a cook kit in the Proteus when I get it. I also have a large ALICE pack. It's damn near filled to the gills.

Dubz, a cookset should fit just fine in the Proteus.

Well, I fiddled around, and I can get a complete change of clothes in it.
Rolled hiking pants, poly sock liners, and a poly under-shirt fit in the bigger rear compartment.
Folded shirt goes in the front compartment. Wool socks go in one of the side compartments.
And I have my pack cover in the other side compartment.

Wow, that must be a bit more capacious than I thought. What kind of pack cover do you have?

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil xtra-small. It actually fits better with the Proteus attached to the Falcon II.
Going to have to figure out a way to strap off my sleeping pad when the pack cover is on.

Damn, that fits perfect. Gonna have to get me one of those. Thanks for the heads up.

What I would like to know
(not to change the subject, but to change the subject)
What pouch are you using for the Map60csx?

I have an older pouch from them, dont remember the name,
but it has a center strap with a buckle that
hits the side of the antenna,so I need something else.
Yours doesnt look like it fully covers the sides of the Garmin?

Maxpedition 5” Clip-On Phone Holster: http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/5-CLIP-ON-PHONE-HOLSTER-8p444.htm

I bought it because the vendor had the GPS60CSx in it on their product pictures, and it seemed like a good fit.

I took off the metal clip and used a Maxpedition TacTie to attach it.
To keep the center strap from messing up the antenna, I just leave it kind of loose.
But I loop the GPS lanyard back up and run the strap through it. That way, the GPS can't go anywhere.

Can do.

Mind you, these are poly hiking clothes.
With thicker stuff, cotton for instance, I might not be able to fit everything.
When I get time, I can take a pic of the clothes I fit into the Proteus.

Would love to see some photos. Thanks.

I go these specs from the Max site, for the Proteus.

# Main: 9" x 6" x 3"
# Frontal: 8" x 5" x 1.5"
# Side: 6" x 3" x 1.75"
# Belt: Integral Waist Belt at 49" max

Thats a neat Combo that you guys came up with. I can see this being great if someone already has one of those two bags. I'm in the market for a new Day/over night pack and am looking at packs from Alps, Kelty and the like. But love seeing what you guys are coming up with. :) Am looking forward to seeing pics of what you all are loading in yours.

I am thinking of a similar setup using the Proteus on my FII.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but in addition to the above I am thinking of modding the pack panel on the FII.
I am not too crazy about its flat textured design and am looking for options on adding some kind of padded back panels to create airflow sorta like what the Camelbak Motherlode has.
Anyone know of some cheap aftermarket mods that can be stitched or velcroed on?

I just found my setup (Falcon II and Proteus) at an online retailer with great close-out prices!
Glad I saw this thread and did a little research!

I am having the same problems with a Vulture 2....I'm 6 foot and the belt is around my belly. When you combine that problem with the huge bulge from the hydration bladder this pack is just about worthless at 30 lbs. This has my intrigued though. Has anyone tried to put the proteus on the bottom of a vulture II? Are the bottom straps the same distance apart as the falcon? If I could get the hip belt in the right place and a few extra cc's, combined with a kydex insert to fix the bladder bulge, the vulture ii might be a keeper. Any info would be appreciated.

How do you access the main compartment of the proteus like this? It seems like it would be blocked by the bottom of the backpack.

You unbuckle the bottom two straps and tilt the Proteus.

Isn't it annoying that you can't get anything out of the Proteus though? Connecting it like that closes off both compartments. Only used for stuff you don't use much? I have a condor 2 and a proteus and I like the setup, but it seems like kind of a pain.

Edit: Haha. Totally missed the bottom 2 comments.
