May 2022 Buck of the Month - 417 Budgie, Silver Cerakote BOS D2 Steel, White Cerakote Frame

Could not agree any more with that last part!
I like the excitement of waiting for the BOTM, enjoy the big reveal and subsequent commentary here (even if it isn't a knife that I end up buying), and putting a new knife in my pocket a few days later.

And much to this membership's credit, we can enjoy and engage in those commentaries/discussions, sans the snarkyness and animosity that other forums are plagued with when opinions differ. No matter how one may feel about one model over another, features, blade steel, etc... we're first and foremost the brotherhood of Buck.

I got mine yesterday, and have had it in my pocket. So far it's cut apples with aplomb, sliced open a baguette for a meatball grinder, and cut the meatballs down to size for said grinder. It's a really useful size, but then again, I like favor small knives. This is my first Budgie, and it compares well to my two other favorite non-traditional smalls. It's about the same frame size as a TRM Nerd, but the same blade size as a Spyderco Ladybug. It has great fit/finish, but is a little stiffer to open than either the Nerd or the Ladybug. Those two have seen a lot of use, though, and I expect the Budgie will catch up. I flushed it out last night, but didn't get any gunk out of it. I don't want to try adjusting the pivot until it's had some break-in. I think it just needs to be used.

I took a family photo along with my childhood knife that probably formed my bias towards small knives.

Sorry, Buck. I gotta pass. Not something I'd carry or use. 😟
Too small (so is the 303 for my tastes), Pocket clip and related screw holes, frame lock, hole in the blade ... Sorry. "Modern" knives just aren't my cuppa coffee.
On the "plus" side, I'm sure someone will buy the one I won't. 😁

That's a huge cut out for the frame lock release. Have you had any problems with the lock disengaging in use?

I'm starting to like this BOTM. Might get one but I really don't need another knife right now.

Wow, one of the slowest selling BOTM's I can recall. It has been out a week now and still 136 left. I'm surprised, not a bad knife even though is was not for me personally. I remember the days of old that I would miss a knife by a couple hours because I was mowing or something. To Bucks credit, I do think the 500 quantity for the BOTM was a good idea.

Railsplitter,

The lock is really solid. Actually the huge cut out is pretty useful if you're wearing gloves. I did some yard work this morning, and was able to open, use, and close the Budgie without any problems.

Thank you. That's helpful because I'm considering getting one. I never even gave the Budgie a second glance but I find the white with blue accents very attractive.

The Budgie reminds me of an old knife I used to keep clipped within reach just in case I ever found myself suddenly dangling from my treestand. Never got in the way, barely knew it was there, but ready and able if needed.
