May have saved my Dad's life tonight !

Eric my best to you and your father.
When I first took Industrial first aid in the mid 1980's, they made it seem as if it was your fault if someone didn't respond to your efforts at CPR. In the early 1990's an American Cardiac specialist that did a lot of work in Trauma wards started the modern approach which is now seen that, the person is dead and you cannot harm them. Ocassionally they will come back by your efforts, usually if they come back it is due to more advanced life saving approaches.

No matter what happens always remember that you did what you could.

As I said my best to you and yours, and hopefully you and your dad will be laughing about the "scare he put you through" this time next year

Hey Guys...

Thanks to all, Very much....

Well we had a rough week here...
On Saturday night I got a call from the hospital and was told my dad wasn't taking his meds, and basically escaped from the ward...

Security found him wandering in the basement. He basically had to be forced to come back upstairs...

When I got there he was trying to escape again..I walked him back to his room, however I talked him into taking his meds and staying put..

Him being a flight risk they told me that he could get outside past security and asked if I could stay the night..

They put us in our own room together.. I had a very restless sleep and was up and on guard til about 4:30am before i dropped...

Again in the morning he tried to escape out the fire exit, and triggered the alarm..

I talked with the nurse and they ordered something to calm him down. Had to actually hold him down to inject it...

He mellowed out after about an hour, but was still acting strange and saying some pretty wild shit, and utter rudeness to the nurses...

I told the nurse that if he tried to escape again to call the police and we would "form" him and take him into the city to the Pysc ward where they could restain him.
This hospital doesn't restrain.

The doc said he was having withdrawls from his meds and that delusions and strange talk was quite normal..

After about 3 days on his new meds I could already start to see a change in him. However they still have him in a locked down ward which requires a password to get out of.

We had a nice visit today played a few games (checkers and Manopoly junior) with the kids, and I could see that he is nearly back to his old self of being friendly to all...

My brother in laws father had a stroke the morning my dad was admitted,, so he is across the hall .. They have been spending alot of time sitting around and talking, so that is good and is proof to me he is on the right path to recovery.

Tomorrow I go in for a meeting with his doctor. Next Wed we are going on a camping trip, so I want to see what the doctor has to say about him being released for R&R for 4 days. We'll see what she says about his progress.

Needless to say I've got VERY little work done this week... Last week I was on track and Finally almost caught up on my work.Well that all got shot to hell LOL.. Oh well,,nothing I'm not use to..

I guess it's back to 12-14 hour days next week for awhile... :)

Anyway,,

Thank you all for your Caring, Support and Understanding..

You People Truely are my Extended Family!

Hey Guys...

I also just wanted to say that his delusions were dur to his either Not taking, improperly taking or an interaction with his meds..
Although his does have pretty bad depression ( ever since my mom died) he is normally a very friendly , highly intellegent person..

I think once we get his depression under control we can get him some help with the loss of my mom and his wife for nearly 30+ years...

Don't give him time to brood. That just fuels the depression. You're falling behind in your work? Hand him some Kydex and tell him to get busy! :D

There was a joke years ago that modern medicine was so powerful, you had to be in perfect health to take it. It's not a joke, when you take so much, it does effect you, not always for the best. It's got to be the right stuff and the right dose, which is hard to balance.

It sounds like he's getting it under control. With a little help from his son.

Hey Esav....

Yaa man,, that is the plan...
I have a couple of new machines that need to be built, and there is a TON of cleaning up to do, so once we get back I'm going to put him to work.

He is my Chief machine builder and I've got a new design that needs to be figured out.. I'm going high tech.. :)

Mike..
Thanks much :) :)

Went to see him today. He asked for his mouth organs the other day and today he was jamming with another guy on the piano..He hasn't done that in years.. A Very good sign...

He's really looking forward to getting out...I have a meeting with his doctor tomorrow and Tues,, so hopefully there will be some good news for him..

He's looking forward to the camping trip when last year at this time he didn't want to even talk about going...

I am very happy to hear that your Dad IS doing better!! I am still praying for him and you!!

God bless your family and watch over them my friend....I know the fear you felt, and my ordeal ended badly. I am glad he is still with you. Now is the time to say whatever is in your head and heart, while your loved ones are still here...not after. Hope he gets outta the hospital soon. Gene

Hey Guys..

Thanks!!

He came home today with No restrictions and with the blessing of his doctor..

It was kind of sad for my dad to leave,, he made a few friends there one my brother in laws dad and another older gentleman who actually lives there in the ward.. He has no family to really speak of.. So my dad plans on going back to visit him when we get home..

So he's pretty happy to be home and looking forward to the camping trip..

Eric that is GREAT news!! I am sooooooooooooo happy to hear that! I hope you guys have a GREAT time camping!!!!

I don't post much but wanted to take the time to pass on my well wishes. Thankfully, It looks like everything turned out ok. Just so everyone knows - It is very common to break ribs and/or sternum during Compressions, unfortunately I've done it several times. Like previous posters have stated - If someone isn't breathing or doesn't have a pulse a broken rib or two is the least of your worries.

Hey Guys...

Well we are back from our camping trip...

All in all it went very well...
Luckily the weather was decent, we had good shade at our campsite, air conditioning was steps away so ifit got to hot for my dad he could get some relief...

Mostly he was cold at night, but we bundled him up well..

He had one rough night but we handled it and everything was OK...
We have his meds pretty much under control now and hopefully they stay working...

This week I'm signing him up for therapy to keep him moving and for something to do...

Heres a couple of pictures of our trip..

Normark,

This is the first I've read of this thread. I'm sorry to hear of all that happened. I do think you did some damn fine work on the first night keeping him alive.

Old people are awesome. They don't get the respect and care they deserve a lot of the time. Good to see you guys taking care of the old dude.

I have found that our parents bring us up and clean us and look after us, then when they get old we have to do the same for them.

Keep us posted. He's a cool looking old guy. It makes me chuckle a little bit thinking of him trying to creep out via the fire exit and stuff. Being all stealthy and stuff. He's still got the fight in him. That's good.
