may I ask about knife dealers?

well I got shut down & told to use google instead. feels like the $30 lasted 1 day

Nobody "got shut down". I suggested that instead of posting hundreds of knives individually, creating a new thread for each knife, and asking "how much can I sell this for" for each individual knife, that maybe you take a few minutes and Google the knives yourself to see if you can find out what they are selling for.

Some knives are very easy to look up. The knife you were asking about that prompted my suggestion had the brand and model number printed on the blade, a simple Google search for that information provided a selling price for that very model within two pages of results.

I also made it clear that I was merely expressing my personal opinion. I don't speak for this forum. And I stated that as a Gold member there is no limit on how many knives you can ask about.

I also took the time to research a very obscure and hard to find knife for you, one that was difficult for me to find, including a selling price, and I researched another knife for you and provided a selling price range.

Let's not play the victim or exaggerate what actually happened. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/queens-cutlery-what-is-it-worth.1890486/

In MY OPINION, it's one thing to ask the members here for help trying to identify and price hard to find knives, but it's another thing to ask for the members to research and price every knife in your fathers collection when you could easily research some of them yourself. But again, that's just one members OPINION, and you're free to ignore it, just like I'm free to ignore your valuation requests.

Good luck with your research.

thank you for your clarification. I took it as you volunteered, then complained about what you had done. I think I understand your position now, so thank you again

Do you have pictures? Not individually at this point, just like 50 knives at a time lying on the floor or something. Start one thread with a bunch of pictures in it just in bulk like that, with knives in neat rows or even numbered, and you can at least get them identified here pretty quickly. Getting likely prices is going to take longer and be less certain.

fyi - we're talking hundreds of knives. thank you I did see that suggestion elsewhere. I will do that for, for example, he has a group of thin silver pocket knives, so I'll do those as a group. he also seemed to group them physically - meaning several isolated in a box together & others in another box. I'll try to take group photos like this as well. & I'll try to do a better job w/ the pics & include a ruler as requested

for example this little guy was segregated w/ others. I'm assuming the "10K" stands for maybe gold plating?

Something to keep in mind. While it is possible someone will see the knife and be able to rattle the info off , often we do research to come up with the answers(we are into knives). It sits better if we feel you are working for the answers also, rather than just waiting for us to do the work, at no profit to us other than the satisfaction of helping.
Yours is a big project and it will take some time, work and patience.
Good luck

thank you. I am (our family is) immensely grateful because we are just about completely ignorant & want to honor our Father's memory. we are currently juggling so many things because he just passed the end of July, without a will or trust in place. while there is no real rush, he kinda asked me to look after these knives, before they start "walking away" on their own, if you know what I mean. I had some photos from 2018 & 2019 so I started there. now that I have some additional collective guidance (from you kind & generous BF members) I will follow the suggestions I'm getting, moving forward. such as going to that knife show this past Saturday. thank you everyone, for your patience & understanding. now that I know there probably aren't any great treasures in the collection, it kinda takes the heat off. really don't know what he was thinking, saying 1 knife might be worth $30K. I just have no clue ...

I'd recommend you just take your time, get a bunch of group pictures together, and post it in one thread. People should be able to identify individual knives from the group pictures, and also point out things that might need a better picture to identify or that they suspect might be particularly worthwhile in terms of value. But we'll also be able to identify whether a whole pile of fifty knives is made-in-China gas station cutlery that is only worthwhile as scrap metal. So it'll be the most efficient way to go about categorizing your family inheritance. Work on identifying everything, then decide how to sort it, then you can start thinking about what they're worth.

Well in fairness you were kind of pushing everything else out of Bernards forum with that litany of posts😀. That's why I suggested group photos and maybe a single thread. I have seen folks have great success that way. In this case it seems to be pretty well documented in terms of the collection so a little checking of ebay for completed auctions as a suggestion isn't entirely out of line.

Oops somebody beat me to it!

Great attitude, hang in there I'm sure this is a stressful time.

Hope a few people take this to heart and get that will made!

well, wish me luck. finally took possession of the collection. no easy task. a few weeks ago, I strained my back moving one of these boxes, that I had over loaded, from one room to another, in his house. I do that sometimes & have muscle relaxers for it, when it happens. it's been years since I needed them. anyway, got them all (I think) boxed up, I mostly recovered from the back strain & moved thru his house & into my car, then into my house, then up to their final resting place (for now). the lawn bags are full as seen, but the boxes are not. regardless, it's gonna take me a while ... hard to explain the emotions of taking them away from Mom, riding with them hundreds of miles away & moving them to where they are now. hoping to do justice to the family & Dad

Good luck! Unfortunately I now understand first hand what you are going through. Hang in there.

I'm not sure if I should get the gold membership so I can ask about individual knife values or just ask for referrals of reputable knife dealers in the Boston area & lower Westchester, NY

while I have an interest in knives, it was a passion of my Dad's. at almost 95 he recently passed away & now I'm trying to help the family. I don't know if using the forum will be too time consuming, so maybe visiting a dealer in person would be better for us. we have probably 200-300 knives to deal with

any thoughts?

thank you in advance ;-)
I’m in your situation with my Dad’s knives, lighters (which are in my daughters hands) & coins.
There are two ways I look at it.
1. Get the value due your Dad’s collection.
2. Find a good home for his collection, in his honor.
For me, #2 sometimes overrides #1. The thoughts of an opportunist grubbing up my Fathers passion is unpleasant.
I plan to sell on here, with the hopes of, most, knives going collectors. I’m in the process of learning the ins & outs.
Also, your health and mental state shouldn’t suffer entering into an alien arena. It can be daunting.
Im not suggesting you take a loss, but holding out for that fair market value prolongs the task.
My suggestion would be, take one box and look on line for several of the knives. There should be mfg. info on the blade. Get the feel of research. It will get easier. I’m not talking down to you, I join you, in looking at boxes of potentially valuable treasure with doe eyes. The suggestions of pics on here is invaluable! These guys know there stuff!!
Good luck, God bless you and your family.

S sonofaghost You are getting SOUND advice from these folks. Yes.

I live in Norwalk, CT and have many contacts up here in this area. MOSTLY dealers who specialize in Handmade and Customs.

This being the case, if your Dad's knives ARE Customs, you may have a gold mine in value, OR simply heirloom value. (Meaning not quite as valuable as emotions make it out to be. A very real thing.)

Group photos will REALLY help. I have much knowledge myself of who what and where....

Send me an email if you like: jcooper AT sharpbycoop.com

We all wish you the best outcome.

Another member here has and is in the process of going slowly through her husbands collection for the last half year now, bit by bit. Slowly going through small batches at a time and asking questions and learning as she goes, on IDing, information, and values. You already have the Gold level membership so you are good to go in all areas of asking values and selling too.

I’ll tag her for you. You can take a look of her different sales posts and get a feel for the kind of help she is receiving here from our community. I bet if you contacted her she would be willing to offer you suggestions and tips if you so desire, she is a good member. S stanandlaurie

Also, take SharpByCoop SharpByCoop up on his offer too. A+ member, 100% integrity, his knowledge and contact base would be hard, if not impossible to match, you can’t go wrong at all by reaching out to him.

I’m very sorry for your loss and I feel for what you are going through.

I wish you the very best.

Sincerely,
UPS

Sorry for your loss OP. My father died a few years ago, fortunately (unfortunately?) he left behind 1 knife and 1 shotgun so I didn't have much to go through. I am not knowledgeable on old timey knives but I can try to assist you in looking stuff up on ebay and google. I'll try and remember to keep an eye on your thread with pictures. Good luck.

A dealer? No, absolutely not. They are in the business of selling knives, not identifying them. If a dealer were to identify some potentially valuable merchandise among your collection, you'll be offered pennies on the dollar if you don't have any idea what you have.
Same goes for asking on the internet. Don't entertain any offers until things are properly identified. There are unscrupulous people out there who troll the forums looking to scoop up stuff cheap before the owner knows better.
Post good, clear high resolution pictures that can be enlarged to look closer at details.
Best advice so far in a thread full of good advice. . .
