Backed out of a custom trade on a Tom Brown Tracker. After confirming he was good with the trade he still kept the trade post up. After seeing it and confronting him if we were still good he said yes. Got an email from him today that stated," he got an offer he could not refuse"!! I was making him a custom bushcrafter with lefthand sheath for the Tracker. Out the time and materials until I can sell the knife. Left hand sheaths are not very easy to sell. I would be cautious of trades with him because if he finds what he thinks is a better trade he will drop you like a bad habit.

hopefully we will hear from him and get an explanation.

an agreement to enter a trade is as good as an "ill take it". the knife should have been listed as traded and treated as though it were no longer his (because, well, it wasn't).

did you save any correspondence?

i would also hope the "other" trader is able to see this thread.

I have all his emails. His postings of still wanting to trade the knife after making the final deal is what raised the red flad. I guess I can sell the bushcraft knife but the time and money spent is what sucks. Some of the fun of trading on Bladeforums is meeting new people and having fun with trades. Oh well. Lesson learned.

This brings up an interesting "issue" with trades vs selling. Typically, one posts a price he/she wants for their knife/item & you may/may not sell it at that price or possibly haggle. No problem there.

On a trade, though, it's set-up more like a auction, in that the trader "fields" offers & decides on the best offer. That's fine.

One thought is that if 2 people agree on a trade, then it's a trade (Basically the honor system). The other thought is that it's the Trader's knife, therefore, they can trade it to whomever & for whatever they want.

In this instance, though, this is more like a purchase, though it is a trade. If the person agreed to a custom knife & sheath, I think that person should honor & carry out that trade. After all, they know that the other person is making something "special" for them, not their usual item. In this case, I'm "guessing" that the knife itself could probably be sold, but the left handed sheath "could" be harder to get rid of.

That, IMHO, is a different issue vs the typical trade. In this case, "trentu" is out something. At the very least, I would think that "mdsmith" "should" offer to compensate for the sheath. I know I would if it was me, IF I changed my mind, but I honestly don't think I would simply because the other person is out something if I don't & I don't find that acceptable (I wouldn't want that done to me).

It's one thing if no one's out anything, I think it's different if one party is out something & that changes things, IMHO.

I'll admit it would be better to hear from "mdsmith" & get his side of the story.

I hope it works out in the end.

Well he did contact me and said he called off the 2nd trade after talking to the other gentleman. I told them to go ahead with the trade. Hopefully he has learned a lesson about keeping his word. He does seem to be an okay guy and hopefully will not do this in future trades.

Tough situation. You definitely went out of your way to be a gentleman about it and set a great example of how the aggrieved party can behave.

When someone agrees to trade for a knife to be made for them, they have to be real careful about leaving the maker stuck with it. That is not an ordinary trade, as CL01 pointed out.

I hope you are able to sell the knife and sheath quickly.
