I've been thinking pretty seriously of ordering a Medford praetorian. Finding written reviews seems fruitless. Does anyone here have any experience they'd like to share? Thanks, Corndog

They're absolutely ludicrous knives. Too thick to cut well, and too heavy to even make good paperweights (I'd worry about the paper getting crushed). However, they are generally made pretty well, although the price is absurdly high for what you're getting.

Sidenote: I don't know how a knife company keeps a straight face while charging its customer $475 for this: http://www.bladehq.com/item--Medford-Colonial-Fixed-Blade-Knife--36961

Despite the above, part of me misses my Micro Praetorian. It was a goofy but sort of cute little knife:

Medford fans are undoubtedly going to show up and tell me I'm wrong, especially about my claim regarding cutting ability. They might even show some pictures of a Praetorian crudely splitting open a tomato.

But at the end of the day, the quality is good, and if you like the design, then you should go for it.

I don't see how they sell anything. I guess there must be a folding pry bar market.

Not matter how thick, strong, and obtuse the blade is, the pivot will be a weak point when prying. Buy a pry bar, and buy a folding knife. One prys, one cuts. Simple.

There is only one thing I can think of that can do both tasks equally, and that is a mother-in-law...

I am guilty of liking the design but cant bring myself to spend that much on those materials. up here in Canada the praetorian runs about $1000 new!!! I cant see one in my collection anytime soon I can get a gun or a couple Busse knives for that price, that will be able to baton right trough that Medford.
they look cool though ...
IMO

I find them absolutely ridiculous. When did we get away from knives actually doing what knives are supposed to do.....that is, cut things? I think they take the overbuilt knife thing to the extreme. I have held them and messed with them at the SHOT Show. Not for me. I want a knife that will actually cut rope and be useful. That is just my opinion, and obviously not shared my everyone. Hence the fact that Medford sells all they can make. IMHO, Les George VECP does everything better, and actually cuts.

They're better than striders as far as build quality but the designs are like the tops knives of folders (funky weird looking). Their Vulcan finish is amazing and the pocket clip the comes with the praetorian literally looks like Kermit the frog.

I've always been drawn to Medford knives but have never owned one. The overbuilt style is cool but, in every day use, isn't very necessary and is often less effective for "EDC-type" tasks. Compared to similar offerings on the market they're definitely overpriced. Also, this obviously has little bearing on the actual knives, but I find the owner very off-putting.

All that being said, I'd suggest checking out Grayman knives if you're really set on an overbuilt folder.

While an owner's character has little to do with the knife, with all the great options out there today, their character sure can affect the decision to purchase.

So let's ask some serious questions here...

Has anyone ever benefited from the construction of a Medford?
Can one do things that a Sebenza or Delica cannot?

Someone please define "overbuilt". Thick blade stock, poor finishing, wonky edge geometry, and designs that were probably made while Greg was on LSD seem more like "underbuilt" in my opinion.

I have a Medford Viper that is an absolutely fantastic knife. It is so thin behind the edge it slices effortlessly. Build quality is superb, I love the ergo's, the flipping action is way, WAY too fun. Sometimes I just want a big thick knife, OK? That was rhetorical, because frankly nothing anyone can say will alter my opinion on this knife WITH WHICH I ACTUALLY HAVE EXPERIENCE. :)

Hey CD! If you like the design buy it brother!! Who gives a shit what other people say.
I would keep an eye on the Exchange. They come up for sale regularly.
Good luck!!

I have owned a Medford TFF-1 for about 2 years now. It was in my pocket and getting used almost every day. It now shares pocket time with my new XM-18. I can honestly say the Medford is built every bit as well and it is much sharper. The only critique is I bought an early model with the aluminum show side scale and it is Cerakoted. The coating is wearing on the edges but I know that's the sign of a knife that's being carried and used. If you like the Praetorian, I say go for it. My buddy has one and he has had nothing but good to say about it.
If it's not your cup of tea you can sell it.
