Member input wanted! New WS&S Rules Thread

I'm a big believer in the old saw, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". It sure don't look broke to me.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, that's the gist of briang, JeffH, Fonly, Tonym, Baldtaco II (what the hell is a bald taco, anyway ) and a couple of others, as well.

I'm a big advocate of more skills and less gear, but you know what will happen if you made a skills only sub forum - it would die a quick death.

If there's problems, then fix it, if not .....................

One of my pet peeves:

"Hey, look at this post I wrote in another forum: link."

If I want to know about it I will go read that forum. Is your opinion so earth shattering that you need to cross post across the whole site?

It finally hit me what the hell his name is...... I never put two and two together until you split the name into two words.

Anyhow - I like the idea of rules and are not opposed to them, but there is a pretty civil forum and doesn't get out of hand much at all. I'm of the opinion of Doc - "If ain't broke don't fix it"

Also - I do like the idea of "more reviews from users and not knife makers" but how would you ever enforce it without being too selective and just pissing a bunch of people off? I think the real rule surrounding that "issue" would be for the maker that posts the knife to also post a small review or possibly pics of the knife in use. I know what you are getting at with this, I just think you need to be careful in how you execute it.

I think I`m one of the "culprits" who post pics of the knives I make here. I like to give the owners "sneak previews" of their knives, and also enjoy getting feedback on new models. I think this forum has the more actual knife users than the others, and input is very important to me. But, no more pics of my blades from me, I will let the customers post them if they wish. No more "name the new knife" contests either, that may be construed as the same thing.

I'm not big on rules in my free time.

This is a great forum that has a way of self-policing itself. Members are courteous and civil to each other. Why cloud that with more restrictions?

For a view into the cesspool of forums that need tight guidelines, one needn't venture very far into the Internet.

My dos centavos... Your mileage may vary. Tax, freight, and title not included and other restrictions may apply.

One thing about the W&S forum vs. other forums is that folks don't post enough PICTURES. If you don't have a picture... it didn't happen. I'm not sure this should be a rule... but I just thought I'd whine a bit... ;):D

I really like seeing pics of all the cool knives and gear.

I'm not sure why we need this. We are one of the best semi-self governing forums I've seen. We could have hundreds (if not more) of "No More" post suggestions. Everyone has pet peeves, but rarely do we see any serious misbehavior involving many of the mentioned items thus far.

If you don't like post links, don't click on it. If I have a "Giveaway", I do it in more than one forum, so I will link to a general post. And, yes, some of these have something to do with WS&S.

If you don't like makers asking for user type reviews, don't read or respond. I have found out about some great gear through just this type of posting.

Suggesting that nobody post survival ideas unless they have directly experienced them is purely unacceptable. We all have much to learn. Try thinking outside the box and listen to newbies as well as the voices of experience. Sometimes untried ideas spawn great innovation.

If we allow many of these suggested rules to be taken too seriously, this forum will end up like some others with banned smileys and infractions given for even a kind word. That would suck.

The better term for this is "guidelines" and it's actually helpful for newbies if we have a thread posted that gives them a quick summary of how awesome and laid back all of you are, and how laid back this forum is. Please don't worry - nothing will change here feel and looks wise, or information wise. We're not going to be taking an authoritarian approach -- it's just that having the guidelines set up and posted will help "sweep the corners" as Esav said, and actually perhaps prevent mistakes being made by newer members.

As you know, both Kev and I are very hands off in our moderation style, and we try to use diplomacy and mediation before turning to infractions and scolding. As you also know, I personally am NOT laid back at all when members become rude to each other.

That's my biggest rule (not a guideline): "Jump on in, but play nice."

As a moderator here, I feel very protective of our members, and feel that this forum belongs to all of us. This ship steers itself better than pretty much any forum on the internet, so Kev and I don't have to grab the wheel often and bring it back on track.

Remeber, too, that we posted this thread and asked for all your input - we're pretty democratic here!

Unfortunately if John follows up on this statement then I think this thread has contributed to the diminishing of WS&S. John please don't do that. I really enjoy your threads as I do the other makers who post here frequently.

Is this really such a terrible thing? I always felt that the makers who contribute to this forum really care about the user-base they cater too and I really can't think of any maker who posts here regularly who doesn't contribute in other ways apart from 'hocking their wares'.

I understand there is this inherent tension between the 'skills' group and the 'gear' group. Yet I like the diversity that I find here. Even every now and again when my feathers get ruffled up, that is still part of the entertainment process for me. If I want sterile, I'll go read an encyclopedia. I tend to come here to read a little bit of colour and also to see some in all those wonderful pictures people post. If anything, our users tend to be polite, sometimes a bit stubborn, slightly opinionated, but rarely do we see arguments that get overly personal. In other words we are a community of real people. Gosh, if we ever implemented the don't drink and post rule, my stats will take a nose dive! Finally - truth is opinions are like a**holes, Everybody NEEDS one!!

The moderators do an excellent job of striking out racist comments and are pretty good at keeping the politics out of it to - which is pretty darn difficult given the broader membership of BF (Kudos to you guys).

Thus far, in three pages of posts read, one clear and very concise guideline speaks to me as a good one to follow:

'delete unnecessary pictures from quote threads'. I would even suggest extending that to 'delete unnecessary script from quote threads' also. This is something that saves everybody time and only asks the poster to take a bit more time to consider their response.

My 25cents...

Instead ... maye we need to use the prefixes more productively. That still leaves a busy forum, but one easier to find relevent topics. Right now, this is what we have available:

How To
Recommendation?
Review
Off-Topic
Photos
Water
Shelter
Survival Kit
Firemaking
Skills
Food

Any suggestions for additions or revisions? I think some of them are too specialized and we need more general ideas, like putting camping and traveling and hiking under one category like "travel". Maybe lump
Survival Kit, Firemaking, and Skills as "skills". Maybe
Water, Shelter, Food as "needs".

I like the idea of using prefixes rather than splitting off a bunch of sub-forums (fora?). Here are a couple additional prefixes that might help:

Trip Report
Gear Test
Rant
Maisey ;)
WSS Event

I'm sure there are several others we could come up with just by looking over common themes that come up.

I think its fine. I love yall, and nobody has offended me yet..:o

You guys are super cool, and we run a tight ship, are great to newbies, and have a great atmosphere.

You mods are great. Kev, and Brian, you do a fantastic job.
Whatever you(we) do, Im sure it will be great, or it will get changed back. Letr rip!

when quoting a response with several pics, delete the pics that have nothing to do with your response, so that the computer dosent have to load the same things twice.

Times 10,000,000!

I hate that, and I have high speed. It's such a pain to scroll down through the same set of 10 pictures more then once, let alone 3 or 4 times.
If it's just 1 pic I don't really care at all.

I thought the W&SS was going good....was there any complaints ? We all are pretty polite to a degree with each other and more or less self policing ? I know there is a knife makers sub forum was there a issue there bleeding into W&SS ?

I agree with kgd. Please don't do that John.

I think you covered it pretty well, here, k, and so did 'mymindisamob' when he said, basically, if you don't like the subject matter, don't click on it.

Agreed, sometimes this can be a bit annoying, but there are other times it could add to the poster's position. I don't think this needs to be a hard and fast rule, but it wouldn't hurt to comment on it when it happens.
