Member ratings?

For the people who know me here I'm a pretty upfront kind of guy. I goof around a lot and I have been known to get some peoples noses out of joint. Some folks get it some don't. I've never hid or run from a fight, but I can see where this new system may start some sniper mentality. I don't see myself using this feature much.

Just for the record when you read my posts. If you think for a second I'm kidding, I am. Because when I'm not kidding there won't be a doubt in your mind.

I, for one, have turned off my rating option in my profile. I am not allowing anyone to rate me as well as I will not rate others!!!!!!!!

I do not like this option!!!

For "GB&U" or "The For Sale forum" it might be a good idea. But to assume that most of the individuals that post will actually not use this feature as a weapon is to assume too much.

I can see it now, watch what you say, don't be frank & honest, and what ever you do.......look out for a "troll war"!!!!!!

And what about W&C????

This is already causing major concerns, and IMHO, it's not just because it's something new, it's because it's not a good idea.

Mike & Spark,
Please reconsider this feature as it is currently being used. I'm sure most will like it as a tool that can be used for their knife trading, but I'm also sure that most will not like it in "general".
And to not just come off sounding like a whiner (not that I care much about that since you can't rate me anyway) , I do like alot of the new addtions that you have made to your site.

I only complain now to try to help maintain some order here. I don't want to see honest/open discussion leave this forum just because people are now afraid of receiving negative ratings.

I really don't see a big problem here. If you don't like the rating feature, don't use it. Anyone who's so concerned about their rating as to edit controversial posts will certainly turn it off in their profile...

Some of you folks are extraordinarily conservative, and I don't mean just politically. You have computers, so obviously you've come to terms with Mr. Edison's magical wires, but other new ideas just don't seem to set well.

Relax! Downrate me! Enjoy the new stuff!

See? That was fun, huh?

Ratings without accountability--the ability to look back and see why somebody got knocked, and by who and how many--is a terrible idea. It's just plain wrong.
A certain percentage of people in any population are, well, jerks. I suppose the rating system is meant in part as a way to be able to spot them from a mile away. But without accountability it won't work that way. You're inviting a jerks' field day.

Ratings? Rating? I don't need to stinking ratings!! Ha, haaaa!

I think that one of the major problems with the rating system of UBB v.6.0 lies with the (silly) rifts that you see here. Each maker (I'm talking more about companies as opposed to individuals) has their own following and when one member of one maker's clan has aproblem with one member of another maker's clan, you get these HUGE battles, which objectively speaking seem pretty senseless. So it is too easy to get one's rep damaged quickly. Likewise, if all you deal with is one clique on here (aone maker's clique or any of the others- with 10 000 members you definitely get cliques!) you may get an "inflated" rating.

I'm just glad that crappy "upgrade" is no longer here!

Well I have been looking for this rating thing and cant find it! One of you smarter guys tell me how to view these ratings?

Rob, they lasted about a day while Spark tried to upgrade the system here. We're back to normal for the time being.

Why don't we just use it (or not) and see if it becomes a problem before we start complaining about it.

My first flaming folder topic

I don't know if it is good or bad!
I don't think that this is such a big deal...
I for one, am going to turn off the member rating in my profile and not rate others.
I can see it being of use in the for sale areas, though.
And a thankyou to whoever gave me those stars before we were downgraded...

Ebbtide out.

Why don't we just ignore it, since it has virtually zero significance in the known universe?

I think it should be given a fair chance. It can always be disabled by the moderators if it becomes a problem.

It's usefulness, even in the "Sale" or "Trade" forums will probably be very limited. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to obtain a top rating. Ultimately, it may end up to be rather "self-serving".

But it doesn't hurt to give it a chance.

I must have missed something but was there ever discussion on why we need a rating system here? Would someone with an undesirable rating (e.g., a "1" or "0") be banned from posting? Is it valid to assume that the comments of someone rated a "5" should be believed more than the comments of someone rated a "2" or less on any given subject?

IMO the rating system is an unnecessary distraction away from the discussion of knives and could subject an innocent poster to wear a "Scarlet Letter." Just my $0.02
