@ betzner...

I guess I am left to scratch my head a little here. I am not trying to be a smartass, but isn't it somewhat incongruous to want to see who is viewing a particular thread, but out of the desire for privacy, you limit who can view your profile? On the one hand, you want transparency. On the other, you aren't transparent yourself. Again, I'm just trying to understand your thought process here. It seems like this is a big issue for you.
Its a big issue, yes, but I have tried to follow the suggestions in posts 20 through 27 which offered advice about keeping the issue up front so it doesnt disappear. That's pretty much what I tried to do in most of the posts following. But I am not going to go back and try to dissect each post to see what was positive or negative, etc.

I would like to clear up one thing. I have never ?had a private profile. I believe I kept my birthday off display, for very good reason. But to my knowledge, my profile has always been displayed. As to transparency, i have argued for transparency almost always in any conversation about it, and pls note I have no idea about who can and cant view my profile. Must have been some confusing mess of boxes that needed checked. Pardon me for having had three strokes right frontal lobe, memory center. Maybe that will solve your question about any incongruities. To say I am not transparent is, in my opinion, out of line. I dont think you are being a smartass but we are all entihtled to out own opinion and my opinion of you calling me non-transparent is of the sort there are probably rules against discussing. No offense taken, however, because of your ignorance of my health state.

I'll just stop there. but yes, I read every word of Mr T'.s fine right up. I read every word where I follow. And do I come here for the people or the knives?vb Does it really matter, though it's for the knives and the people in that order. While knives may be he reason people come, its the people who are the backbone who without, there would be no BF. Do I like BF? I absolutely love almost all I see in flat awesome I use. But that doesnt mean I am going to shut up about the display of people's names.

Good discussion all the way around. But we will never always agree on everything. Except perhaps that Buster Warenski was the finest maker of knives ever to live. I know, its kinda close to advertising, I'll stop.

Have a good day, gentlemen.

The "not transparent" observation comes from not being able to see your profile. I understand that there may be information such as your birthdate that you do not want getting out. But if I click on your username and want to see your profile page, this is what I see and it is everything I can see:

I am no expert, but I believe that message is the result of having a box unchecked that I believe was checked by default with the new forum software. If you would like to change it, hover your mouse pointer over your user name in the upper right corner. A menu should pop up. In the left column, 4th category down is "Privacy". Click on that, which will open a new page. Go down to "View your details on your profile page". That is the box that prohibits anyone from seeing your profile when there is no checkmark there. If you want to change that, simply check the box and then choose one of the three options in the drop-down menu underneath it.

Listen, you are entitled to feel however you want. I am not judging you; only trying to understand where you are coming from. If I did not care at some level, I would not have asked the question in the first place. In the end, it's all good. Whatever you decide about this BFC hiccup is all good. We may not always agree on everything (as you said), but that is not necessarily a bad thing either.

As far as Warenski goes, he was exceptional no doubt. The finest maker ever? Mmmmaaaybe... ;):D

Thanks a bunch for showing me the way to fix whatever the problem is. Af'ter I read everyone's comments this morning, I pulled down the box and was a bit familiar with what might be found. I had seen the privacy button befofe but never changed anything, not knowing that apparently the system changeover might have. And no hard feelings in any way. Head injury people tend to have a trigger finger and react without full thought being given. Usually it's under control from training. So, thanks for the helping hand, it is definitely appreciated. Now all I must do is remember it, lol. Thanks, Bob

HH Frank Knives tickles my fancy a little more but Buster's knives are in the top 5 of the old school makers.

I did a 30-second Google search and found this link for the Xenforo 'Members online' Add-on. I think this is what you are referring to?

There may be reasons that Kevin doesn't want this, but price isn't prohibitive. Heck, I'd ante up.

That would just show who's visited Bladeforums in the last 4 hours. There's already a "members online now" on the main page. This add-on doesn't show who's viewing a thread or a subforum.

^^ Got it. I didn't know this. This seemed to me what was asked for, but you are correct, it does not address the individual forum's needs.

Just for clarity (my own, mostly), if it happens that the plug-in is simply not available to do what was able to be done before, I put that into the category "that's life", meaning any discussion is over and done with. For me, at least, that would be one example of a satisfactory conclusion, ie, it can't be done with the new platform in place.

An analogy would be an employee who just couldn't deal with a switch in company cellphones from one ISP to another. There are differences and as a user or employee, such company decisions need to be accepted as future practice. I think that when I first started to "knock" this specific difference, it was driven by lack of more responsiveness, personal opinion and what a neuropsychologist would explain as an "organic personality change". It means the brain has been affected by major trauma and it doesn't process as before. Through this discussion, I feel back on track and thank everyone for their forebearance, 'cause I can get real bitchy when it happens, though something I am trained to see coming. Sorry, off track comment but felt it might give insight.

Back to the subject - Another example of satisfactory conclusion is where the company or owner has bottom lined the pricing, presuming availability, and then that's that. IMHO there is no better source for anything knife-related than Blade Forums. I knew that when I said I might renew at a lower level - and in the process, cut off my nose to spite my face. I already look like crap. Just another example I can attribute to the injury, but no, that was me even before, lol.

Anything in between these two poles - cost vs availability - is stuff bearing room for discussion, and that's what's happening here. I go with however and whatever turns out. I enjoy BF, staff and members way too much to throw such a large part of my enjoyment of life out the window.

Best regards,

Bob Betzner

Edit: Error on my part, responding to a post from page one! Thought it was recent.

Is this not an issue for any other members? I am a little surprised the lack of interest from the members and no response from administration.

I saw a use for it when it existed and would occasionally use it for casual reasons, but have really never experienced a time since the changeover when I missed said function, so it was clearly not an integral part of the forum for myself. I suspect a great many folks here are in the same boat, because there aren't many that have mentioned it since the switch.

This is pretty much where I stand on the subject. I liked it when it was there but I don't really miss it now that it's gone.

I like to visit the GB&U forum occasionally and I can remember a few times when it proved somewhat useful there. Sometimes members who were the topic of a thread could be seen viewing the thread but not responding with their side of the story. Still no big deal but I thought it was a good feature in those cases.

Oh man, I loved that feature and miss it a lot. It really did make the forum a lot more fun. It was great to be in W&C and see a huge mob of people gathering in a thread, and just KNOW you're about to watch a full-blown meltdown in real time! And then you'd see a moderator like Esav lurking and you knew the fun was gonna kick up a notch. I'm sure the feature will be added back into Bladeforums as soon as Spark gets it figured.

....falls into the category of "I could care less about it" ... to *ME* and me alone of course it seems much ado about nothing.
