Love to enter! I am feeling the spirit.
I am the barbecue committee chairman for our local cigar club. Yup, a cigar club. We have a lot of vets of all ages in our club, and really, just a bunch of great guys. A pretty community minded group.
Every year we beg and borrow food, equipment and sell tickets to earn money for our Christmas Eve dinner that we at the Wounded Warriors/Fisher House for families of the wounded troops. This will be our fourth annual dinner, and I am lucky enough and proud to be associated with men and women that would so unselfishly give up their traditional Christmas Eve to come down and work at our dinner serving out troops.
This year at our barbecue we had a great time, but were lucky enough to have two recovering soldiers speak to our group as well as a mother of a son that is at the Wounded Warriors center. They came by to thank us for our efforts (how little they are...) but more importantly to them was the fact that we cared. They were really inspiring and gave us pause to remember how little we do for our troops these days.
I am pleased to report that we have earned enough money once again at our barbecue to feed about 400 folks (troops and family) down at the Fisher House on the cigar club,
AND to have a couple of Sunday night football events at the Wounded Warriors Center.
It's a lot of work, but the rewards are
infinite for all of our participants.
And this year, two of our veterans groups honored us with a special presentation for our efforts.
Doesn't get much better than that! OK... maybe a new pocket knife would cap the weekend nicely...
