Memories.

A little fill in for post #41- picture #3 Of course Rick Menefee and Bret Dowell in Ricks finish room. Next picture of sheath maker Larry Parsons Mustang, Oklahoma. The folder picture is from the Steamboat Arabia that was sunk in the Missouri River during a storm in 1856. It was rediscovered in the 70's in the middle of a field buried 40 feet deep. The folders were discovered in the wreckage shipped in a packed barrel. The folder designs are still popular today.
The first picture is Chuck Stapel holding the sword he made for Disneyland Europe he made to be buried in the rock-King Arthur Special.

Thank you so much!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I agree with STeven here.

I was torn on saying anything about it, because I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the old photos... I recognize many of them from books I own like the Gun Digest Book of Knives published in 1973. There are quite a few photos I haven't seen before and they are super cool.

But I do think there's a disconnect from what Gus was starting with this thread. I could be wrong and don't mean to speak for Gus... that's just my gut reaction.

Not complaining or wanting Pocketknifesheaths to quit sharing... just sharing my thoughts is all. :)

I apologize for the lacking, I'll try to do better.....

To answer some of your questions STeven. I know a lot of the people I posted, but not all of them. And as I posted I thought this is not a who is - who thread?

Holger - I never met him in person, talked to him on the phone a couple times. What a great guy, he made me laugh a lot.

The movie pics are more of a time stamp, where were you in that time?
Pretty much same with the presidents photos?

The civil war photos? When I was growing up we played all the games - Cowboy & Indians, Cops & Robbers and of course "WAR!" Can't remember how many times I played or how many knives & swords I made? All I remember that it was always a bloody battle.
Now being older I still study and read about the wars and history.

I never met Bob Loveless, wrote him a letter and did get his autograph. Seen a lot of his knives and would very much like to have one.

In the past eight years I have lived with Todd Davison. Through him I've met Bob Dozier and AG. Bob really liked my sister Karen, she has long red hair. We would see Bob at the Tulsa Gun & Knife Show, he would wave to Todd come on over and pull up a chair.....:)

Rick Menefee I met 2009 Blade Show. Picked him up at the Atlanta Air Port and got to hang out with him all weekend, we had fun.

Paul Long - I've talked to him on the phone, had to ask him some questions and he was great answering them. Thanks Paul....

Tony Bose - I met him and got his autograph - would very much like to own one of his knives.

Todd had been in Jimmie Lile's shop and tells me some of those stories about him.

I've handled all the thousand slip joint knives Todd has made accept about five of them. Those are good memories...... watching a maker progress like that.

Here is a couple shots of Todd in his old shop.

Lin Rea top left - met him at the Oklahoma knife show - what a great guy.

Kyle Royer next to Lin - Never met him, but I do have the image of the last knife he made burned into my memory now....... Thanks Kyle & Caleb....:D:thumbup:

I've met Eric very briefly.

Never met Jim yet, but plain to hopefully use his mad skills here soon.

Hey Al,

If you saw the original post that Gus put up, he put the names, too.

It's REALLY helpful for people if the names are there(when possible) to put it into context for them to understand who they are looking at.

From top of the referenced photo, it looks like Dave Nittinger next to Kyle, not sure who the lady is and then James Batson.
On the bottom is J.R. Cook, Ron Newton and John White...not sure who the other folks are.

I know those people and those names, but have also been in the game for over 28 years now, and get to a fair amount of shows...what about the people who can't/don't get to shows or don't even live in the U.S.? Maybe this makes sense....the photos themselves are priceless, but add even more value by attaching a name, maybe where they were taken and why they give you memories if it isn't already apparent.

And would like to repeat, you are posting up some superb photos.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I met Ed Fowler in Vegas, that was pretty cool and John Young, Bil Ruple and a few others.

I think I talked to Ed for twenty minutes..... good times.

I'm sorry STeven - I don't know them all. When I first posted, I said these are some photos I have saved?
And I may have saved it because I new someone in it? But maybe not all the people in it?

I appreciate any help in that...... Thanks! I learn something all the time here.

Anyone who wants to name them is very welcome to do so. Maybe we will hear how they know them?

In post #41 Al posted a photo of me in my shop with Leon Treiber (now deceased). He is also in the photo of the Arkansas Show award winners on the first row in the maroon shirt. Leon and Chuck Ward came over to the shop that day for a visit and Chuck (always camera in hand) shot the picture. Leon lived about 4 miles up the Guadalupe River from me and Chuck was visiting him from ARK.

STeven the gentleman top row middle is Lee Ferguson from Arkansas and next to him is his wife Linda a knifemaker and scrimshaw artist in her own right.

One of the things I regret is that in 1986 the American Bladesmith Society was starting or decided to have a group meeting at the Tulsa Arms Show. Bill Moran was there doing a cutting demo in the back area. I think there were 12 bladesmith there to start. I did not think to take a camera but tried to visit with several of them there.

A great idea for a thread Gus ! and Steven, 2005 was the year I wasn't able to make it to Ashokan, sorry to have missed meeting you!

Here are some folks I’ve met over the years;

Dan Maragni, for those of you that might have gotten an old, I mean really old Cold Steel videos before, the guy in the garage banging on the Trailmaster was Dan, he has long since moved on and became an excellent bladesmith himself, although to find a blade of his is pretty rare to do as well, but he did make a nice one Seen HERE

IMG_1275.jpg

A good friend that I met and known for years now from Ashokan, Jim Siska, his knives are beautiful, caught this portrait of Jim at Ashokan, as most of these will be from that locale

IMG_1246.jpg

This guy is hard to tell who he is, with all that hair ! But it’s Jerry Rados, I think he liked that beard!

IMG_1247.jpg

A shot of Jerry and mastersmith JD Smith checking the forge

And JD making some flames as he hammers down that Damascus

IMG_1331.jpg

Old blue eyes himself, Don Fogg, from time to time gets up to Ashokan too;

And a good friend and possibly a little certified, but, aren’t we all ? Tim Wright, see this thread that Coop started a while back Here to see some of Tim's beautiful work!

And for a couple years Brian Lyttle also has made the trip down and presented some excellent lessons for us, here he is working on some engraving, also at Ashokan

Brian_Lyttle_2008.jpg

Any more I try to get photos as best I can, for times like this…as I regret not getting shots of my friend Tony Bose while I was able to visit while out his way, and at the small knife show we have in Lewisburg PA has some great knife makers as well as some up and comers that would be good to capture too.

Great pics Gary, I dont know I would stand so close to the fire with a beard like that. Yikes!

Great to see some pics of a younger Pat Crawford, one of the pioneers of the 'tactical' folder.

Bill Moran at the Blade Show 2005.

A visitor stands in front of Bill Moran's shop in 2004.

Tthe photo of Charlton Heston, is with SHANE TAYLOR who was making picture damascus before he realized Montana was not the only state in the US

In 2005 I visited Don Fogg in his shop in Alabama where he lived at the time. He had a shop behind his house that was small and very neat and well organized. Leaning against the tool box behind Don in the picture below are two shivs and a larger blade.

Don Fogg at Ashokan. I remember watching his forging technique and thinking how fluid and effortless it was:

Jim Siska immediately after explaining to me that I'd likely never be good at grinding because I lacked the 'knifemaker's tool rest' (carefully note the proximity of his wrists to his belly) - great guy!

Gary and Matt - love the Ashokan pics!

Some cherished friendships have been the real benefit of my involvement in the custom knife community. I don't have pics to illustrate all, but here are a few.

The annual pheasant hunt on the eve of deer season with Matt Gregory and Dan Farr:

To say that my daughter cherishes our summer trips to Dan's cabin would be an understatement.

orig.jpg

Met Les and Bob in person for the first time back at the 2004 SOS show. Bob is sorely missed.

orig.jpg

Anyone recognize this dude who used to dominate the ABS cutting comps? These events are what really gave me the impetus to pursue a deeper understanding of the performance aspects of custom knives. (Reggie Barker, for anyone who doesn't know)

orig.jpg

So many laughs at so many shows over the years, so few captured on my camera:

orig.jpg

This isn't mine, but it sure did make me laugh - who can name this cliff hanger?:

Waiting with Russ Andrews for an hour that seemed like three while the ABS judges scrutinized his MS submission knives. Never in doubt. :)

orig.jpg

Never forget learning to forge my first knife. Didn't think it was possible. What an incredibly rewarding experience:

Some peeps at my favourite show - Little Rock. It was the first US show I ever attended (though several years before this particular pic):

Murray White taught me how to take knife pics:

Collecting raw materials for the 'Knife Game' with Karl Andersen and Lin Rhea:

Another knife friend whose company I miss - George Tichbourne:

I've seen The Pit from a few angles over the years - usally darker, more crowded and a good deal less focussed:

Great photos, Roger and thanks much for the captions.

Matt Gregory always seems to have to take the difficult road in presentation(ie, no captions....no bueno!!!).
