Merc Worx Folders

Good grief. I'm all for bucking the political correctness trend but that is a little too much.

Citori, In some respects I agree with your previous post, but if you had any loved ones who had "been there, done that" then I doubt you would buy one either. I'm not in the market for a "WTC Terminator", now or ever.

Can someone please explain what I'm missing here ? Is this about their sales tactics or is this something else? Thanks mike:confused:

If the market can handle the price of one of these pieces, then so be it. Currently, people are paying a premium for certain brands, that don't seem to be worth the retail price, but it's all cyclical, depending on what the hot trend is in the marketplace.

Do I think a factory knife is worth $400, when there are many knives of comparable quality available for half the price? No, but ff you want one, buy one.

There is one brand which isn't worth the premium price, but if anyone brings up this topic, you'll get shot down with phrases like, "you don't understand...You don't own one...They are used by real Operators (phone operators?)...etc etc...
I'm not saying which brand, because last time I did, my email was stuffed with interesting comments...

I guess I'm not understanding and it probably doesn't matter. Here's the bottom line for me. I bought their big folder, I opened the box, fit and finish were fantastic. Not a stitch of play in any direction.I noticed a problem in the grind I called MercWorx the gentleman that I spoke with was nothing but that, a gentleman. He instantly said no problem we will send you a brand new one. We spoke for about 30 minutes and I couldn't be happier with the way I was treated. Is the knife fantastic? It is to me! Is their customer service top notch? They were to me! Is the knife the best in the world? That depends on who you ask! Is it worth the money? That depends on who you ask. Will I ever use it in a military or covert situation? I sure hope not! Can it stop a bullet? I doubt it!Will I feel real good whipping it out of my pocket to cut something? You bet I will! Bottom line....Here's a company that is willing to make a decent handmade knife as well as offer great customer service. What more can be asked? If the price is to high just keep your eyes open for another member selling one and I'm sure you'll get a great deal.I know I'm going to be looking for a few deals!! Thanks mike

Mike - I am with you all the way on this. I haven't handled one - but I trust you know what you are talking about.

It is easy to poke fun at the Mercworx marketing strategy because it is both overblown and silly. But that doesn't really have anything to do with the product in hand. For all you boys that pay attention to marketing as part of your purchasing habit - learn to ignore it.

Can't afford the cost? - Then don't bother.
Compare to someone else's prices? Well, those makers that some will call "custom" makers don't make customs (at least not very often).

So, except for reputation, why should the handmade tactical folder from Mercworx cost any less than those made by Maker X? This is a very honest question, and not easy to answer - so don't bother insulting me. The "handmade" aspect of knifemaking has been debated endlessly. Knife in hand is the only measure of worth for a user. Collectability is a completely different issue.

Wow, $400 and bad grind lines...sign me up. Oh wait, I could spend alot less than $400 and get a knife with a bad grind, never mind. For the price they're charging I would expect them to be a little more careful about letting substandard products ship out the door.

Dan - ever spend $600 and get a bad grind line? A poor liner lock? A chipped point? "Custom" makers aren't perfect either.

What matters is if something goes out the door that isn't right, the maker needs to be committed to repair/replacement.

I would expect more from a new company. I would expect them to be concerned with their image enough to spend the extra time to inspect their products before they ship them off to a customer. Maybe I'm being naive or maybe I just expect people to care about the quality of their work.
Maybe I'm just so turned off by the comic book quality of their self promotion that I find it easy to fault them for shipping a sub-standard product. The shadow warrior/spook/super duper secret society stuff is really stupid.

I'm so SF guy but I have trained with some special forces and with some green beret's,and you know what I saw all of them carry? Spec plus Ontario knives.I also watch TV closely when I see special units operating and I never see any of these "special ops" knives?

Dan every company and every custom maker has had problems out the door.I didn't even look at their advertising when I made my decision to purchase. My very good friend and a respected dealer here told me he had a couple of these knives and said I should take a look.I saw the knife and it appealed to me so I bought it. When I noticed the problem and called them they treated me exactly the way I would hope to be treated, with respect!! Anyone that knows me knows I tell it the way it is(or atleast the way I believe it is) I believe that Mercworx is truly offering a quality handmade knife at a slightly high price, thats not to say it's not worth it.Sometimes a company doesn't make the best of marketing decisions and maybe Mercworx didn't do such a great job promoting this one but you have my word it is a quality knife. If you call them and talk to them you will see they really do listen and do care what you say. That's alot more than I can say for some of our other favorite knife companies. I hope you guys don't let the packaging stand in the way of getting one of these. Just to clarify something, the reason I am standing by them is because they did treat me with respect and that is everything to me!

Masterchef, well said. That is the best possible reason to get a knife.

I agree, if you like a blade and it works for you, who gives a damn if others like it.

I for one have have been critical of the the advertising of Mercwerks in the past. But if they produce a quality product, I'll be one of the first in line.

Masterchef, I look forward to a report.

Gee, I think the first person we knew who bought MercWorx fixed blades had to send them back cause they weren't even sharp out the box.
Now we have the first person that we know of buy a MW folder and has to send it back cause of bad grinding.

NIB as I said we all have to make our own choices but how can an up and comming company survive if we don't stand by them through the begining stages? Bottom line,I'm happy and I think they're really trying so I'll stick with them till they prove me wrong!!
