as many of you know i hunt, own a barrett .50, .270 win .300 wea mag blah blah blah.....

i'm going to thin out some hunting rifles and want to pick up a couple long range predator rifles that most folks could shoot in a pinch.

predators will average a couple hundred pounds and be of soft skin.

lets say 500 yard/quarter mile shots.

i'm sick and tired of reloading and don't do it except for the barrett .50

so.....

advice on store bought rife and match cartridge.

PS: please don't try to trick me or amy will get pissed!

thanks in advance you white feathers.

PPS: pics welcome and this is just a friendly soft target shooting thread ;)

For off the shelf performance, and if money is no issue the very best is Accuracy International.

The AE comes in a .308 which will easily reach what you want with great accuracy.

A little cheaper but almost as good would be a Sako TRG-22 in .308

And even cheaper still is the Remington 700P LTR in .308, which is one I have and I have shot a 7" group of 5 shots at 650 yards, and I am no marksman, let me tell you.

(not my gun)

As far as ammo, if you are shooting targets you can't beat Federal Gold Medal Match ammo for off the shelf accuracy. And 168 grain .308 is a round anybody can shoot with great accuracy and easy to find in stores.

Hope that helps.:D

skunk, all of the above are excellent choices, if you have time take a look at the cz rifles, i do not know what all the calibers are, but i do know that the olympic teams use the cz rifles.
i would definitely do a bolt action or single shot, i personally like the savage with the accu-trigger system and you can get them at wally world if yours has not stopped carrying firearms yet...and they have a scope on them already, and they come in all of you upper calibers, i am probably going to get one of them before next hunting season.

sounds like you are going after doll sheep, mountain goats or something in that area with that long of a shot and the weight...

Merry Christmas Mr & Mrs Skunk. If I was getting myself another Xmas present like that, I would be very tempted in Cooper of Montana's new Model 54 (repeater) in .308 Win using a 168 grain boat tail projectile. Also I would be topping that repeater with a NightForce 3.5-15x50 F1 (First Focal Plane) scope. I think that just might do what your looking for

I couldnt see the pics , but 200 lbs predators?????

THis aint your average ground hog, praire dog, or coyote ?

A 200 lb wolf would be scary. Is mtn lion considered predator???

What are you calling a predator?

:D

Rem 700 in .308 with 168 HPBTs will do ya fine out to 400-600 yards. Soft skin critters won't stand a chance.

Of course if you relaod the round with Lake City brass and 4064 powder, you'll cut the groups in half ( Army team loads). I've shot this load for years and have never been disappointed ou to 400 yards on small critters.

Good luck, Stinkie.

Well, Skunk, I'm fond of my Remington 660 (light and quick in this kind of country) in .308, and a big +1 on the Federal Match. I'm surprised that my carbine can be that accurate, but it is! :)

So, skunk, which rifle are you going to give me?

I would settle for the EU Uncle MoFo.

Not as available as .308 but still commercially available, I'm thinking you need a .338 lapua. I have a Sako TRG-42 that's chambered in it, and regularly shoot it 600+ yards out to 1000 yards. I'm not Carlos Hathcock with it, but I can put down two legged predators at that range, even if it may be a shot in the foot, or ear, or hand, it'll still hit and the caliber is no slouch. Quite a bit more accurate than my old Barrett m99, but not all that much cheaper to shoot.

Want .308? I'd buy an m1a, throw it in a sage EBR stock and build a modular m21.
