Merry Christmas and Totally Off Topic

Pretty much everything said above is true, most rifles will out shoot the guy behind it. I've owned AI's Hk's 70's remy's Steyr-ssg69's you can pretty much hit a specified target at a thousand yrds. It just takes alot of trigger time behind the gun, reading the wind, ranging and soforth. So it just depends on how deep your pockets are and what you'd like to spend. Might I sugest Iron Brigade Armory, or Gap rifles or Ai's it just depends on how battle hardened you want you rig to be. And of course your $$$. Then you've got optics, get the best you can afford. Because you can't hit what you can't see, more $$$. Good Luck Sir,

I'd absolutely love one of those.

Me too!! The price tag for a CheyTac package is very steep though....around $10k. You get a lot for your money though.....pretty much the ultimate sniper package IMO. The Chey-Tac Long Range Rifle System includes: Chey-Tac M200 Intervention rifle, CheyTac tactical computer (commercial PDA with CheyTac ballistic software), Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X scope, and Kestrel 4000 wind/temperature/atmospheric pressure sensors, linked to the PDA. The Tactical Computer with sensors and internal ballistic database provides all necessary data for long range fire. CheyTac papers state that the entire System is capable to deliver sub-MOA accuracy at the ranges of up to 2500 yards (2270 meters).

I'd have to save for a couple years to acquire one unless the Corps starts using it.

Staying with your military theme, I like the Knight Arms KAC M110 SASS with the supressor.

Page 22 in the catalog.

Knight's makes some nice stuff.

Or you could buy my HK.

Are silencers legal in Idaho?
But Knight Armory does make some nice semi-auto rifles.
I liked their SR-25, it has a very nice barrel.

Anyway if the zombies come, most of the sniper rifles mentioned here are a really bad idea. Lets think about it logically zombies have all the abilities of a human minus any significant thinking skills. But they will probably be able to hear well and use senses as well or maybe better then most people. So the bang from that 50 cal will take down any zombies who are lined up in a mile radius, but it will alert any other zombies to your location. and then its gona be hard to run with that huge rifle. Also as long as ammo is concerned then you need a caliber thats really plentiful in most gun shops which you are going to raid on your way to salvation. Z51 proposed the best choice a silences sniper rifle, in a zombie scenario a silenced weapon is a huge advantage. A system like VSS Vintorez or AS Val would have been a great choice but you'd never find any ammo for it. So the best choice would be a short range silenced sniper, a silenced SMG like HK MP-5SD3 with good glass and set on single shot would be ideal.

But me personally, I'm ready for when the zombie epidemic starts. I'm gonna tie bunch of knives to my hands, put on bullet proof vest and a tactical helmet, I mean lets face it, chances are you are not going to be one of the survivors. So at least I'm gonna be the baddest zombie out there and will live long enough for scientist to discover the cure that will turn zombies to normal people.

P S sorry if I ruined the seriousness of your discussion.

i agree, but i will be one of the "last" survivors  ;)

I have both the Sako TRG42 and Sako 75 Hunter in .300 WinMag. Both have proven sub-0.5 M.O.A. right out of the box. The .300 WinMag has 190 gr. Sierra MatchKing bullets available from Federal, and that's what my TRG eats. The Sako 75 eats 180 grain Nosler Partition (Formerly 180 grain Sierra Gameking but Federal doesn't make it anymore). both rifles have Zeiss Glass (The TRG has a Hensoldt 4-16 x 56ff, and the 75 Hunter has the 3-12 x 56T Diarange) Both rifles will easily do the trick!

For a lower price and nearly as good, there is the Remington 700P, available in .308 and I believe there is .300 WinMag as well.

.338 Lapua Mag is too much cartridge for 500 yards for your purposes. Maybe not 'too much cartridge' but rather 'the hassle of ammo supply doesn't justify the expenditure'.

There are some people who swear by the 6mmbr for varminting. That round is inherently accurate and Cooper Rifles chambers it.

cool and thanks, i'll look at those sakos, i have a sako in 22ppc but that obviously wouldn't have enough poop to take out much of anything at 5 or 600 yrds.

I don't see where Skunk ever mentioed exactly what predators he is planning on shooting but around here they are typically coyotes. For them 5.556/.223, .243, 6mm and the like work well. .308 is overkill for a coyote. Also Skunk wanted something anybody could shoot and something smaller than a .308 would fit the ticket. Considering what we have seen of Skunks goodies price appears to not be an issue. Besides the variety of bolt guns mentioned a Wilson Combat SS-15 is a possible option. IIRC they will install and zero optics at the factory.

My two cents worth.

600-700yard 'effective' range

.308 win. 168 or 175grain as needed.

Bolt Gun - aka 'Cleaver'

Rem700PSS 20-inch BBL (cut, recrown), NF 2.5-10x32 mildot

5-23-09-handcamera015.jpg

Gas Gun - aka 'Hammer'

GAP Custom DPMS LR308, 18-inch BBL, EoTech or NF 3.5-15F1 mildot

Works up close and long range...

Of course he did, he is going zombie hunting.

But, I agree with what you said, right tool for the right job. Then again if we apply the hog philosophy, skunker is going to buy two of every rifle mentioned in this thread.

If I had the coin right now, I'd be getting a Desert Tactical SRS. http://www.deserttacticalarms.com/specs.html

I met them at SHOT and they were great guys, definitely ones to stand behind their product. Quick caliber change if you are inclined to change your mind about what you NEED at the moment. It's bullpup design makes a full size rifle look like a short barrel and if you run a suppressor it's about the size of an un-suppressed regular rifle. The trigger was very good for a bullpup and the existing caliber conversions cover most of all the requirements from short work to loooong stuff. The price is actually bearable when you consider all the advantages of the system. I've considered thinning my gun safe down a bit and getting one, but I just can't bear to sell a gun...

I also recommend GAP built rifles.
http://www.gaprecision.net/

I have a couple by them and I've been very pleased all the way around. Both accuracy and customer service have met or exceeded my (high) expectations.

If your considering a .308 I'd go with 175 grain bullets, and a 1 in 10 twist barrel. I've shot even heavier bullets out of a 1 in 10 with good results. But the 175 is time proven for long range shooting over the 168 grain, it stays sonic longer and bucks the wind a little better at distance.

remington 700 ltr
black hills match

decent scope and mounts (Scott at Liberty Optics is the best - he will take good care of you)

done deal.

Any out of the box AR15 will work @ 500yds. Fun plinkers too. Lottsa mods/accessories available, different caliber uppers. Best of both worlds!!
P.S. .270's a great round. Nice flat shooter.Like a 7mm Rem mag ;-)

Rat, nice cleaver gap builds some very accurate weapons. It's set-up nice too.

Thanks - the bolt gun is fairly stock, mostly cosmetics, could use a trigger-job, shoots well under 1MOA with 165 grain FedGameKings, what I feed it the most of...

The DPMS LR 308 is a full custom from GA Precision. Built for hunting hogs at night. Works. :)

WinMagFrog is absolutely correct about the GA Precision quality of build. Exceeds all expectations of quality, function, customer service. I'm saving up for a GAPrecision Crusader, mainly because I love the name. ;) And I'll run it in .308, because it's a well-known cartridge by me. I'm torn between the .308 and .260... we'll see. :)

What I really need is a PVS-26... ; )

.

James, I'm thinking "Long Pork."

In that case 5.56 would be a little on the small side in my opnion. For the ranges Skunk is talking about .308 is a good round when used with good quality bullets. I've always been a fan of something along the lines of the M40A1 adopted by the USMC. For more range I would go with .338 Lupa in a platform like the 98Bravo by Barrett. For closer ranges the REC7 (also by Barrett) in 6.8 SPC would be a great choice and would handle a variety of predators from 300 yds and less.

I like the REC7 so much that it will be my next long rifle. Of course that will have to wait until I'm out of school and maling good money once again.
