Merry Christmas/ get to work GAW

cchu518, holy cow that is a BIG lizard. I remember the Savannah monitor I had when I was younger. Those big lizards are soo cool.

Thanks, he's my favorite! 15 pounds and five feet! We got him when he was 5 inches long. I have a 25 lb Cuban/blue cayman rock Iguana too, he's like a mini 4 foot dragon/dinosaur.

Man! I would love to see them together! My Monitor was only about 29-30 inches, not sure on weight. Carried him everywhere I could get away with, sat on my shoulders all the time.

Cool reptiles guys.
I was deployed to Gitmo in 1979 for Jimmy Catrer's "show of force" & saw those dragon/dinosaurs all over base.
Unfortunately there was no way I could sneak one home.

Winston (who listened when I said "sit") and Isabell. Both were rescued at about 6 weeks of age. Winston was adopted within weeks of my wife and I buying our 1st home. I was fresh out of grad school (wife was just starting. We leap-frogged our way through: one working, one in school) and he took us from being a couple to being a family. He went everywhere with us. Winston is the kind of dog that books are written about...Old Yeller, Bristle Face, etc. and though it hasn't been required, I'm confident he would go for help if I ever fell in a well.
Isabell on the other hand is the kind of dog that comic strips are written about. She was my plan to delay the alarm going off on my wife's biological clock. As such, she was allowed to get away with things that Winston was never allowed to do, ie sleeping in the bed when I was out of town, napping on the couch with my wife during study breaks, you get the idea. For a couple of years I thought Isabell was a little soft between the ears, then I came to realize that, just like my wife, she's smarter than I am and just stubborn. I have seen her (talking about the dog here, not the wife) clear a 5 strand barbed wire fence chasing my in-laws cat and once caught her on the kitchen counter (all 4 paws standing ON the counter) eating a whole bunch of bananas, but to this day she cannot get in or out of a car by herself. She just stands and looks at us till my wife says "She must be scared, just pick ger up." Easy for her to say, she's not picking up the 60lb dog that is smirking cause she won.
Now years later we have two small kids and these dogs are there constant compainions. Winston plays soccor with our son and they both "orbit" the kids as play outside, never letting them out of there sight. I've had people ask "do your dogs bite?" And I tell them "not with me standing here, but approach one of those kids and you'll find out."
Lord, make me the man my dogs think I am.

I miss my two best cats, We couldn't take them down to california when I moved from Oregon.
Leo & Zeus - Who will poop by the christmas tree this year. :(

I'm not really a fan of reptiles but damn those are cool. Do they make descent pets, like by not ruining your house? Do they stink or anything? I want one!:D

They're fairly rare in the U.S. Maybe a few thousand Blue Tegus at best more than that in terms of the rocks. But that said, I don't recommend them to anyone.

It's a very serious commitment. The Cuban rock lives 30 years and gets close to 40 lbs. He has his own room in my house. My tegu has an 8 foot cage. I love them like I would my own kids if I had kids and am incredibly attached to them. I wake up at 530am everyday to do the rounds of feeding our critters before I hop on a train at 720 to get into NYC and work 9 to 630. I get home around 8ish and if I have to care for the animals I do it before I feed myself or anything else. I spend $60 a week on fresh vegetables for the veggie eaters I have a freezer with bags of mice for my snakes and order 2,000 live crickets a month for my other reptiles. If you can commit, they are incredibly rewarding and dog tame, they seek out attention and let you k ow when they are hungry or need to go potty. The Tegu more so than the rock in terms of the latter.

I'm lucky in that my wife shares our interest. We spent part of our honeymoon in the middle of a jungle science center in Costa Rica to photograph venous snakes during moonless nights. We've braved 25 mile hikes in the Sonoran desert to do the same, so it's kinda a lifestyle and hobby for us. Have pics if you ever want to check out, just pm an email! We're looking to volunteer with the blue iguana conservation society in Grand cayman next year.

Yeah maybe when I get a house then. Don't think have the room or $. I think I might get a snake in the near future though. Would really like to see all the animals you got for sure. I always thought your avitar was a pic of a hedgehog but that's the Blue Tegus huh? Will send email or if you can post more here sure everybody else would like to see them too. Can you recommend what snake might be best to get for Apt. living?

Mykel this is a very great idea for a GAW and the knife is killer. If you don't want me to make any more posts please just say so and will stop but am an animal person so hard not to comment on the pics. Thanks for doing this GAW and if my post gets picked send the knife to Rappy. I would be bummed as f#$% if I had to leave my cats behind. Hope you win Rappy. Here's a pic of one of my cat's Eclipsa and her greedy paw trying to rob me of my 62.;)

Will get them both in a holiday photo with some blades later.

Ok, you wore me down (and I think you did a really good job with the leaf…).

And our adoptee (or were we the adopted???) Mallow (for toasted marshmallow color): standard.jpg

Mallow adopted my wife and I, we think when his original owner got too rough with him (little girl must have thought he was a doll). He sleeps on our front porch now. Has a heated water dish, food regularly, a light bulb and a heated pet pad, not to mention a nice fleece and a storage tub to break the wind. We're pretty sure the neighbors still groom him on about a weekly basis but he definitely abides with us.

Great idea...and very generous. Congrats on the new job. Here's one of our boy (on the left) after a long play session with his visiting girlfriend (right). Can't imagine life without pets.

Oh, and seeing you're from my home town, here's one of our very special boy, Diesel. Diesel and my wife had the most extraordinary bond...as if they'd shared another life together at some point. Being a large breed he passed away at the relatively early age of 8. My wife grieves that loss to this day. He passed away after a battle with cancer less than a year after this photo was taken. He was an ambassador for dogs big and small to those who might otherwise be afraid of dogs. I can't tell you how many hearts he swayed with his gentle, calm spirit that belied his appearance. We both miss the big guy. Thought you'd enjoy this pic I did of him as a self promotion when the Hawks were at it back in 2006. I call this one, Couch Potatoes. Go Hawks!

I have two dogs. Rescue dogs. If you want to donate to animals, don't do humanenityshameonthem society. One of my dogs is half Pit Bull & half Lab. The other is a Rottweiler. They will not let you adopt dogs like mine - they will kill them first. Good loving dogs. Protective - yes - as are my my knives and guns. But knives and guns are tools, they can't love. But my dogs do.

51Wk6nbrNoL._SL1002_.jpgBuster is a big ,tall rangy Beagle with perhaps some other hound mixed in. He came to us from the local shelter. I wanted a beagle and there were a couple of them at the shelter, but this old boy walked right up to me, sat down and leaned against my leg like he belonged there. so I chose him. Then the fun started. on the way home from the shelter he was sitting on my wife's lap and threw up all over her. A week later, I took him to a local pond for fishing when he got very upset that I was throwing the fish back in the water and decided to bite me in the breast hard enough to draw considerable blood. It dd cause me to drop that fish which of course he ate. my wife still does not understand how Buster lived through that day. Buster has developed a cancer that has caused this big tumor on his muzzle. The vets 18 months ago told us to not even bother to renew his shots or bother with heart worm, they guessed that Buster would be leaving us within 3 months>That was a year and a half ago. So, he is a tough guy, no doubt, and apart from some moments when he becomes obviously dazed and confused, and occasional breathing issues, he is a normal, and cheerful dog. He is still the worlds best food thief and can eat and entire loaf of bread in under 60 seconds without tearing the bag, I know because he has done it many times, any time I leave the bread to close to the edge of the counter top. He loves to steal food off of children's plates at birthday parties and cookouts, and has an acute sense of opportunity for his thievery. My JK Fanatsy League team is presently named in his honor, The Dakota Beagles..Thanks for listening and for the wonderful GAW that will bring joy to somebody this Christmas season!

All my pets were rescued by me. Now we have four, black, fixed, female dogs. Their names are Moonshine, Midnight, Luna and Star. One other small, fixed, male dog by the name of Solar. His sister, Eclipse, passed last year. One fixed, female cat by the name of Precious.

Good morning fellow animal lovers,
I'm going to wait till after the Hawks game to pick a winner so there's still time for you procrastinators to post pics of your precious pets.:)

Here's my Gang of exterminators taking a break. They are rescued cats that I had spay or neutered. Now they live in and around my shop. Sometimes I wonder if I'm their pet. My shop is 3/4 of a mile from the main road backed up to a golf course next to a Bay. There's plenty of stuff for them to do. For them it's paradise. The're living the Florida life style!!
