Mesed up my BRKT Grasso II

Just got this last week and decided to try it on a dead branch that was sticking up from a tree in our yard. It started to chop easily but developed these two dimples/burrs whatever- towards the end of the chopping. It only touched the wooden branch no hidden metal or anything that I could see. Not sure what to think, I'm no Bushcrafter. BRKT website says this is a chopper, did I abuse it? Any ideas? My fault or should I send it back?050 (800x600).jpg048 (600x800).jpg

looks to me like the edge was ground a bit too thin for a chopper, I'd send it back, probably email them first

Bark River knife? Probably "user error." "Improper chopping technique." :D

Seriously....Sounds like another misground knife came out of their shop. BRKT will regrind it...fixing new knives is part of their exemplary customer service.

Looks about right. And yes it is totally your fault, that dead wood is much too hard for a chopper to handle. ;)

This should be posted in their forum to get proper critique on how to use one of their knives. :foot:

BRKT has a "tendency" to grind their convex edges way too thin...

It will be YOUR fault but they will "fix" it because they care.

I'll echo what everyone else has so far insinuated.

"ECHO...ECHO...ECHO...ECHO...ECHO..."

:D

Basically it was ground too thin, which seems to be par for the course with a lot of their stuff. They'll regrind it for you, causing you to lose what looks to be at least 1/8" of blade width at the belly. Not good. If you send it back I'd try to insist on a replacement and for them to check the grind thickness to ensure it has sufficient supporting material at the edge.

Oh man....I had a similar situtation with my grasso bolo 3. To be honest it can happen with any knife steels when ground too thin. My advise Google some good cutlerly stores in your area and have them resharpen it. Brkt will pretty much do the same if you send it back. Plus you might save $15 for shipping.

If you would post this on bark river forums I guarrantee that you will piss off a good amount loyalists. Let's see what Big Mike would say about this in this forum since he has all the bolo versions.

I slightly disagree. I have an aranyik e-nep that I abused when I took a trip to Samoa and it didn't suffer any chips or rolls. It just got dull like a butter knife

Man, I'm learning a lot here. I didn't see a BRKT forum anywhere on our forum. Can someone point me in its direction and I will post pics there as well. I will send it back and insist on a replacement. Kind of lost confidence in them since this was my first BRKT purchase after months of looking. I'll do my homework next time-guaranteed.

BRKR is on another knife forum... They will fix it, but it will be YOUR fault.

Well, Ive read some of his responses and I'm not sure I would quite characterize them as "very professional". What I do know, according to that forum, is that he has no faults and does no wrong. His followers will remind you of that after he tells you that.

With my interaction with him indeed he was professional but you know if you act like hitch then you'll get treated like one. It's as simple as that.

But yeah I would compare that forum with North Korea.

OP, like I said 10 posts ago, they will fix it, but it will be YOUR fault...

Ill leave it at that.

I'll thrown in my two cents worth. I personally found Bark River Grasso Bolo III to be ground for combination chopping and cutting. Mine developed some rolling as well (which is preferable to chipping), so I spent a bit of time with 400 grit wet sandpaper until they were removed, putting a working edge back on it with only the black compound on a leather strop. It's now one of my best choppers, with no blade damage from soft or hard woods.

Or you can easily send it back to Bark River as they have a no questions asked warranty and will send it back to you looking like new (abiet with a little less belly).

As to the knife forum that cannot be named... don't even get me started. Although I've had no issues with Mike Stewart personally, some of their fan boys can be a bit nasty to people posting negative comments about their knives.

Please stick to the issue with the knife and NOT what happens or how people behave on another forum.
