Message for Newbies-Introductions

Hi everyone,
I'm Brian Colby, been a knife knut for a few years. I just finished my first knife a few weeks ago. I've been hanging out with Peter Atwood for a few years. Done a few kit knives, had alot of fun with them. I also went to my first Blade show this year. What a cool time. I met alot of people who's knives I love. Talked with people about making them learned alot. Not as much as I've picked up here. I've been meaning to join the NECKA, which I really need to do. I'd love to get down to Indian George's sometime.

Hi, I am Walter Powers. I am a retired person and live in Lolita, Tx. This is roughly halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi, Tx. I started attempting to make a few knives as a hobby. I have completed 8 so far and am now working on 7 more. I do only stock removal. I have severe tendonitis and some arthritis that would make the hammer bit almost unberable.

Shoptalk is without a doubt the greatest wealth if information you could ever want. Nothing is asked of anyone but to share information. We've all come here with questions and answers to just about any topic under the knifemaking sun.
I't not a rule to introduce yourself here, but it makes for a more pleasent experience to know to who we speak. I know a lot of folks are a bit worried about posting personal information on the net and I respect that. But please at least give your first name and fill out your profile so we know were you live. It wont hurt ya. ;)

Larry Nowicki here. A little more about me http://www.nowickicustomknives.com/docs/about.htm . My site meeds a little update but I'll get there soon.

I just registered on BladeForums the other day, and just did a search for a place to introduce myself, and found this thread. I'm not a knife maker, so I'll keep searching for a more appropriate place, but I just looked at Dave Kelly's knives on the link a few posts up.....!!!!!

Dave, I have to say that yours are the best-looking knives I've ever seen in my 53 years. They look just perfect. Practicality plus beauty in one. I think the reason is that your overall designs, excellent in themselves, are combined so nicely with the textures and colours of the materials. So many custom (and production) knives these days look either stiffly mechanical, impractical, or overdone with flashiness. Yours, sir, have class. Serious class. One day I hope to own one. Thank you for posting your photos...I would love to see more, if you have any!

hi my name is john worthington i come here every day to see whats up been making knives for 12 years now some time full and some times part time part time now as i am a house dad and look after my 3 boys [8,4,2] full time .keep up the good work this is the best forum there is
cheers john

I'm not a new guy, but I suppose its good for everyone to participate in these threads once in awhile. Course your probably better off not getting to know some of us degenerate bastids who've been hanging around here so long ;)
I'm Matt Shade, don't know for sure how long I've been making knives. Stumbled through the first one a couple years before I found this place and been at it ever since. Guess maybe 8 years of it. Don't know how many knives in that time...some would say none, but I do manage something that closely resembles a knife now and then. I guess you could call me a part time maker since I sell one once in awhile. I'm mainly into stock removal, but have recently got into forging, and I make a few folders now and then when things have been going to smoothly on the fixed blades.
I'm also a full time college student (working on a degree in construction management),raise and show quarter horses (reining), working full time doing maintenance at the county fairgrounds and part time for a hay and straw farm....and jealous as hell of you guys who get to spend time in the shop everyday without having to choose between sleeping and grinding!

My name is Frank Eaton, I am active duty Army...although right now all I do is play military skydiving instructor, and I make knives on the weekends. In about 3 years, I will retire from one, and move into a real serious career of knifemaking. I have been making knives for almost 2 years so I am an amateur at best, but where there is a will there is a way. As the initial post said there is more info floating around here than in most libraries, just have to filter.

Hey guys my name is Marty Young and I'm from Irvine,KY.
I'm going to get my knifemakers membership one day when I'm comfortable calling myself one.
I've learned a lot listening to you guys and I'm really glad there's a place like this to come to.

Good Morning BladeForums!!!

I am David Farmer (I know, you could tell by my handle). I live in Dickson, Tennessee, but I am moving soon. I have been interested in knives all of my life, being raised on a farm and having an outdoors-life hobby. I have been in the tactical aspects of knives in my 30ish years of martial arts and self defense training and instruction. I started making a few months ago.

This forum is a wealth of knowledge, and I, for one, am greatful for all of the information that is given out. It has helped me.

Hello.

I'm Alex, from Baltimore, MD. I don't have much to offer in terms of knowledge, since I'm not experienced in knifemaking (made a couple of rough, unrefined blades, put some handles on a couple blanks, etc), but I hope to learn from all the people here who've posted pics of their amazing work and kindly offered their advice to those in need.

Thanks to all!

Peace.

greetings to all...i'm mike, and i am not, as yet, a knifemaker. i have always been interested, but never acted on that until just this past winter. as i was looking at some of the really nice stuff you all are making i figured maybe i too could do that. so i started getting together the parts needed and built a forge--found something to use as an anvil--got some scrap steel to practice on and started reading up on the "what/how/why" ----and pounding hot iron.
I have always done some type of crafting but not any one specific, but this has caught me and i wish i had started long ago. there is so much to learn about all the different types of metal, forging, making the arms do what you need so the hammer can make the metal do what you want it to do-----and a great deal of info is passed freely by those of you that know how to do it to those of us that don't-----and (as a "learn from doing" kinda person)---many thanks to all.
additional usless info about me:
mid 50's - married 33+yrs - 2 adults (they used to be kids) - 3 huskeys
living in tucson now since 1998 - lived here before - 1980 to 1990
i have always worked in a "hot" enviroment, shipboard engineroom, GM foundry, and commercial/industrial a/c service since 1976. if i can help any of you in any way--just ask...........
so with that i'm outta here and again thanks--azmike (mike perry)

I originally posted this in the "Who The Heck Are Ya?" thread, but it never hurts to re-introduce yourself:

I'm Brent Schermann from Milford, IL. I'm a former Marine, current Machinist working in a Hydraulic/Pnuematic Cylinder Production Facility. I've had one type of knife or another since I was a kid. I've always been fascinated with the form and function of even the most basic cutting tools. I started selling commercially made knives several years ago as a side business. I would commonly get the question "Did you make any of these knives". I finally got tired of saying "No". Working in a machine shop I had access to a lot od worn out files and a couple of grinders....and that's where my addiction started.

And this in Fitzo's "Teachers and influences and thanks" thread:

First, I would like to thank my wife and kids for putting up with my long hours at the forge and grinder. Without their understanding I would never get anything done.

I started a little over a year and a half ago grinding old files that I got from work. I picked up a couple of books and that helped a little.

The first knife maker that I met was Jerry Rados. He showed me 3 of his knives, one folder, two fixed blades. These where the first handmade knives I had ever seen and I can still picture every detail. Jerry also gave me information for the Chicago Custom Knife Show and said I should check it out (which I did, and will be checking out again this year). Jerry had another maker with that day by the name of Karl Anderson. As luck would have it, Karl lives about 8 miles from me. He gave me an open invitation to visit his shop and over the past year or so has helped me out greatly.

I would like to thank all the makers that I met at the Chicago show last year and and the Blade Show this year who offered up advice to a new maker they didn't even know. I'm sorry I can't remember all your names but I do appreciate the kindness!!

I have been a visitor to this (and other forums) for the past year or so, but until recently hadn't joined. So even though my name is kinda new I have been benefiting from information for some time now and would like to thank all of you that have taken the time to share your knowledge with us "newbies"

And just in case I missed anyone....Thanks everyone!!!

Hi guys, my name is Jay Hinton, and I live in Pasadena, California.

I've been reading this forum for a number of years, but only recently started making knives. The information here has been invaluable. I'm grinding my first batch right now, while my buddy and I work on repairing an old kiln so we can heat treat. So far, I've been working with 1084 and 01. Eventually I'd like to move to stainless, but it's freaking expensive stuff to learn on!

Thanks guys!

Jay

PS: What happened to the search function?!

Hey Everyone.

My name is David Schott and I am from Salem, Ma. I am a relatively new knifemaker. I began my knifemaking at age 16, when I bought some mild steel and ground myself a tanto on a bench grinder, heated it red with a torch, and plunged it into my sink. I knew nothing of hardening or steel types or even what made a knife a knife. I also threw out that knife two years ago not even thinking about it (regrets now). Then my uncle passed away and i was left with his collection. Among it was a Joe Kious knife that I became interested in. As time went by, i found myself more and more drawn to customs. I knew I was handy and had some artistic talent and handcrafting and art is in my blood coming from a family of germans who all worked with their hands. A year later I am selling knives to the public, just getting into the foray....

I am one of the younger makers that I have seen at 26. I hesitate to even say that as it sometimes influences people to believe I am haphazard and careless or somehow less dedicated to making good knives. For the time being, I let my knives speak for themselves and have had no complaints :)

I am currently working on a website, but for the time being, a few of my more recents can be found at:

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie knifemaker from (what used to be!) a small town just a few miles north of the
Air Force Academy, called Monument. I have found this forum to be an invaluable source.
The folks here are fantastic! They are always quick to lend their expert support and have always been a big encouragment to me. Thanks to all who have been kind enough to answer the many questions I've posted over the last year.

I plan on attending both the PKA show (Denver, this month) and the MKA (Missoula October). Hope to see some of you there.

Best regards,
Dana Hackney
Monument, CO
