Message for Newbies-Introductions

Just wanted to say thank you to BladeForums and all those who freely share the information it has taken them many frustrating days to learn. I am a new maker that like many others does not have enough time. Anyway, my name is Donavon Phillips, from Rolling Fork, MS. That's in the delta for anyone familiar with MS. Thanks for the info, hopefully one day I'll be the one answering the questions, instead of asking them.

My name is Matt Gregory, and I seem to really enjoy wasting belts and steel... by trade, I'm an audio/video specialist in the truly elitist sense of the term (upscale home theaters and hi-fi 2 channel systems). I live in the Southern Tier of Western New York (40 miles or so south of Buffalo, in the snow capital of Western New York).
My passion for knives started very early in my childhood, and through seeing the work of masters (on this, and other forums) it pushed me to test my mettle (pun intended). So far, I don't seem to get enough time to practice, but eventually I'll make more time...
Thanks to all who post! I'll admit that I'm more of a lurker than a talker on forums like this, but I prefer to offer something when I post, rather than just yapping with no real substance.

Mine turn? Aight... *stands up*

Ahem.. My name is Bryan, currently residing in tropical Anchorage, AK. I am slowly working up to the title of Amatuer Knife Maker. Still at "Just a guy with a grinder" stage :D

Presently work at a knife shop and am working with a local knife maker when I find time (Which is scarce). Working on my first knife, using a jig for this one to get a feel for the belts, grinding, after heat treat grinding, etc. Next knife will be a free hand fubar :D

Thanks to all who post their knowledge, screw ups, tricks and more. It greatly helps and is much appreciated. Guess that's all

Welcome,Welcome...........Any advice for a fellow forum member as i build my new Media room under my suspended slab carport? :D

I'm Pete Crowl. I from Waterloo Indiana. I've been a knife maker for a few years. I forge mostly and have made most of the equipment I use. I enjoy coming here and finding out what everyone is working on. This forum certainly is a wealth of information.

Thanks to all

Pete

I'm Jeramy Gadberry. I grew up in Montana, watching my grandfather grind knife blades, beat horseshoes, and do just about everything else a man can do. He could build a barn, plow a field and brand cows all day long, and then go home and play fiddle, guitar, piano, and sing. When I go back and read the letters written by people of that generation, the language is so precise and articulate that I can hardly understand it. Modern English doesn't even seem like the same language. My grandfather and the men of his generation are a real inspiration.

I now live in Northern California, near Santa Rosa (long story). I started grinding blades probably eight years ago. I soon moved on to forging and eventually damascus. Ultimately I found that pattern-welding ruined everything else for me. Nothing interests me as much as taking a fresh piece of damascus out of an etch and seeing the pattern for the first time. I had no supervision or instruction other than the Bladesmith book and the sage wisdom of places like this forum. Thank you all for that!

I traded a few knives and sold two if memory serves me correctly. Then my landlord sold my house and I lost my job all in the same month. I had to give up and move on. It's just been in this last year that I have been able to start picking up the hobby again. I'm hoping to be back to making damascus by the end of the year. This time I have better tools, a bigger budget, and a great deal more experience. Maybe it will work out.

My name is Jon Cook, from St. Louis, MO, my handle is from other forums where I used to have a 1993 Rx7, which is thankfully no longer mine.
I am 26 years old and have collected knives since I was young, then i got into shooting, cars, bikes...the list goes on,
I started "making" knives earlier this year, I moved into a new place and started throwing knives again (hadn't in a couple years) and kept being frustrated by not having what I wanted in a throwing knive, so i made one. I liked doing it, although it was frustrating for lack of tools.
I have made one other so far, that came out pretty well, thanks for the compliments, those who did so, and I have another in the works.
Unfortunately i am working on 2 project houses right now, one of my own and 1 for my business, so time is short, when both are done, i hope to build a forge and get a decent grinder and really go to work. Right now i have a backlog of drawings and concepts to work on when i get going again.

thanks to everyone for putting up with stupid and/or repetitive questions that some of us newbies have, it helps us out alot

i look forward to looking at everyone's creations and hopefully posting some of my own soon

I think I already introduced myself somewhere, but in case I forgot to...

I'm Andrew Petkus from Columbus Oh, I'm still in the newbie stages with 3 finished knives and a few more in various stages of completion. Been hammering for about 5 months with another few months of research before that.
Welcome Andrew, My wife and I lived in Columbus untill 1980 when we moved to S/E Ohio. I've been forging around 7 years fulltime. If you get down this way, stop in, we'll pound some steel. Fred :D

My name is Cheryl, and I am your daughter...

Well, folks, I appreciate all the knowledge I've gleaned in here, and I try to keep the shenanigans to a minimum in the Shop forums and in the Wilderness forum. My name is Dan, I'm a civil servant, and I'm 26. I live in the badlands known as Maryland;). I have dabbled in woodcarving, and I am interested in knife making, but I don't think I'll get into it big time right now, although, I like learning about it. I am buying some customs here and there, and really like a lot of what I have seen on this site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you again for the information I have gotten from this forum.

didnt see this thread until today so...........

Hey folks ! My name is Todd , I live in Fresno , Cali and I work in the Point of Sale industry.
I've always loved firearms and knives and have collected the latter for years , although most of what I have isnt what you would call.... well lets just say its not high dollar knives made from exotic materials :)
Anyways earlier this year after moving into a new apartment I got really bored and wanted a hobby so I thought I would clean up some of my older blades and from there I went.
I have made my 4th knife (thanks to you folks on here and a few other resources) and am working slowly on my 5th.
I have discovered that since I hate summer so much that my future knife making will dramatically slow during the summer months (just too dam hot here) so during this time I've been experimenting and playing with filework , wood finishes , making sheaths and just learning.
I have a lot of tools but no workshop save from my boss's which I can use anytime I want, complete with belt sanders and various grinders , drill press , etc.
I do my own heat treating at home , Okie style !~!~ One day maybe i'll have my own forge/oven/workshop but not in a long time.
House prices have SKYROCKETED in Fresno and in California period , I couldnt afford a house even in crachville right now.
You folks with your own setup are lucky indeed ! :)

Lately also I've been working on a few folder kits that I'm starting to enjoy a lot , but I want to get back into the grinding and so forth....Once Fall hits and the temps drop I will. (I cant deal with heat over 85*) lol.

Anyways I appreciate the help I've gotten so far , your a great group of folks.
Take care ,
Todd Fries.

Greetings, all. I'm the possum, and I live in Southern Illinois. Made my first knife, oh... lessee now... 'bout 19 years ago. Been a hardcore tinkerer or passionate hobbiest ever since.

I'm not withholding my name in any attempt to offend. Really. I know some of you guys would much rather know someone by name, so I'm only writing this to at least explain that I'm not trying remain anonymous for dishonest reasons. Not too long ago, I posted a thread about how I used a knife to kill a racoon. I just don't want the wrong person to see something like that, and be able to look me up in the phonebook. I don't want to deal with that. They could probably find me if they were determined enough, but I don't want to make their job that easy. I have shared my real name all the time in private emails with people I trust, so if you're really curious just drop me a line.

Besides, would a possum by any other name be any less vile or revolting? :D
