Metallic container for boiling and cooking

How about using a USGI individual 1st aid pouch? I bought a complete pouch less Med's on eBay for something like $18.00.

All I wanted was the plastic insert for the front pocket of my Maxpedition M5 that I use for a 1st Aid Kit.

The plactic case was too big for where I want to use it.

Water tight case measure 4x 5.5h and 2d.

It would never work for a minimalist PSK, but I've been eyeing these snowpeak Titanium Trek mugs for a while now:

.7 liter capacity (24 oz), weighs 4.25 ounces, comes with a lid, the handles fold flat against the body, $29.95. The thing of it is, I've just about decided to go the US army canteen cup route so I probably won't go this way, but that mug sure is interesting to me.

Thanks for the link, bulgron.

I've been looking for a stainless steel or aluminum mug with a lid, for some time now. It's a bit pricey, but it's nice to know it's available. A lid is something to consider - on the surface, it helps to keep crap out of your cup, but more importantly, a pot with a lid boils much more quickly, thus requiring less fuel.

Hey Doc, good thinking.
Even if we had a metal cup, bring along a compact falttened piece of aluminum foil, or two. It has a hundred uses, and now, with your obsevation, 101. secure aluminum foil over the top of the cup/pot for quicker heating/boiling.

Re titanium I use a Vargo 700cc mug with a slotted lid off ebay for a good price. Worth a look.

i built this kit around a small fanny pack, i the double water bottle variety, include a stainless G.I. canteen cup, i keep one of the water bottles full, the other holds food, first aid, and items i want to keep water proof, the cup hold a lot of other stuff-- fire starting gear, para cord, and a outdoorsmans blanket and two space blankets fill the pouch. larger knife and small saw or game processing gear in the pocket, food stuffs go in the pouch. so i have the shelter, water, food thing worked out.

skunk,
sorry i am somewhat digitally challenged, but will try to get some pix for you.

I have some of the small trangia tins listed on the first reply they are very good quality but not what I would call daily carry items for a PSK.

2dogs-- cool link.... we should get together and go for a hike sometime.... have lots of knives and gear, will travel:D .. allscared@yahoo.com

i use a snowpeak 700 ti pot/mug.... i love it. it is the perfect size for both drinking and cooking.....

Hi guys

In my small back pack I carry a small coffee can. works pretty decent. You can also dig with it fairly easily.

I am putting together a smallkit and I am going to try cutting a small coffee can down to about three inchs high and packing it with all the fixins. If I cut it nice and straight I think I will still be able to use the lid with a little tape.
what do you think.

. . . There isn't much you can't cook with a sierra cup and a small billy pot. I've used one since the '60's, and the Aussies here know what they are.

Okay--I'll admit to not being an Aussie, and therefore to not knowing a "billy pot" from something that doesn't get inhaled. I have seen the term used in print, however. What, exactly, is it?

I origialaly went with the Sierra-type cups, but then went to the nesting cup that fits over the Nalgene bottles.

The bottles hold a litre, and that is what the Katadyn MP1 tablets will cover per tab.

The cup is stainless, folding handles, and I'm savin' pennies for a Ti one, if it will make a difference...

A cylindrical cookpot with a bail, usually a lid too, not always. Imagine a small paint can with a bail. The Australian Aborigines first latched onto these for cooking their bush tucker when metal trade goods arrived. I used to be able to find them here. About a pint to quart capacity. Just right to make a soup, then a pot of tea or boiled coffee.
