Metallurgy translations: "timbre"?

It's more than just processes.Today we can analyse for all the elements and we can find exactly were they go in the steel and what they do. Thus the term "micro-alloying" which defines steels now.Though I can't remember at the moment which one , there is an element that can be added which changes sulfide inclusions from elongated to less objectional spherical shape. Compare that to cooking where significant changes in flavor can be made with just a pinch of a spice in a big pot of stew.

So the difference between then and now is that "timbre", the term Carpenter used, is a much more defined "micro-alloy" today? In other words, the things that he saw the results of, people now see the cause of?

Not just seeing the cause of but designing an alloy to eliminate the bad and adding the good.
