Interesting results. I wonder if there was any residual oil on the blade, and while the upper side was subject to direct rain impact that may have sped up the oil removal by mechanical means, while the underside was shielded. Sort of like when you use the sprayer attachment in your sink versus letting dishes soak. Or perhaps UV breaks down oil more quickly?

It certainly held up better, visually, than I had expected.

Nope. There was no residual oil on the knife blade John. No oil on any of it as a matter of fact. You can see that the pivot also rusted.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Great thread. Looking forward to how much the oil will affect the knife.

Well, this post will wrap-up the adventure this knife was on. The knife stayed on my woodshed roof for 43-days. To sum up,

This is how it looked when it went on the woodshed roof.

This is how it looked after I cleared the snow away and as I took it from the woodshed roof.

And this is how it looks today. I did not detail clean it. Removed the rust with Flitz and then lightly sanded the blade and finally touched up the micarta covers with some RemOil. It's been 18-days or so +/- a day or two and the covers have faded somewhat but not bad.

I still don't like the red micarta. It's too red for my taste but I've decided to keep it.

Thanks for following the Mudbug's adventure.

Very entertaining and educational experiment, ED; thanks!
The knife held up surprisingly well, I think. Is GEC the Timex of knives?
Maybe I don't have to "baby" knives nearly as much as I do. (I'm sure I take much better care of my knives now than I did my Colonial Forest-Master when I was a kid, but that old knife is still in great shape, except for bent springs from youthful indiscretions/stupidity.)

I'm closing this thread.

I'll start a new one for my next project. Comparing delrin, micarta, bone, and stag left to - who knows; soak, roast, freeze, ........................................?

It'll be interesting and on target for this sub-forum as it will encourage discussion about cover materials used on traditional knives.

Thanks again for looking in.
