I guess so. I emailed Camillus awhile back and received a call from Camillus this morning and a voice on the other end said that Camillus had them available for $20.00 a set. :D

How do these compare to the originals? Are they still big and fat or are they more streamline? What models are they for? Crewman I hope!

I didn't ask, but I am assuming that they are the same green micarta they use on the Becker Extreme. Maybe not though. The scales should fit all of the Becker line. Don't know if they are the same dimensions as the originals. Even though I havn't had any problems with the originals slipping in hand, the micarta should be more grippy I'd think. Well worth the 20.00 they quoted me.

I'm also interested in picking up a set. I think they'll make the Becker an even better knife. It's a +1 to the cool factor as well. Mac

Just ordered my scales 5 mins ago! :D As stated earlier, they were twenty bucks and 5 bucks shipping. I also ordered a Ranger Little Bird today and can't wait to get my hands on it. And let me just say that Justin at Ranger Knives is awesome. His customer service is incredible!

I ordered mine this morning as well. The rep said she believed they fit all the becker fixed blade knives, but she didn't know for sure. The slabs on the Xtreme are not as thick as the old green plastic style. In my opinion they offer a better grip and are "+1" on the coolness factor. By installing micarta handles you will lose the hollow grip space, and will have to find shorter torx heads to secure the slabs. If you choose you can just epoxy the slabs and forgo the bolts. For twenty bucks i think you will make a nice improvement to what ever model you have.

If you have some tools you can buy your own slabs from knife-making supply houses. They are MUCH cheaper then $20.00. I think the last set that I bought was $3.50 for 2 pcs at 1.5" X 5". You can also choose the thickness.
There is a lot of grinding/sanding/drilling you have to do though. So the $20.00 may not be a bad deal if you don't have toe equiptment or just don't want to do it. I like doing that kind of stuff, plus it gives you a "personalized" handle.

One thing i meant to ask the rep this morning was the exact type of micarta that is used for the scales. Do any of you guys know what is used? Is it a green linen micarta? Just curious. Also, I saw somewhere on the web a guy that used his old scales as a survival capsul worn around the neck with paracord. Not a bad idea!

During the mini kit competition on Hoods Woods site, I saw where someone had used the scales as a capsule to house extra gear and thought it was a great idea, but I'd suggest using a break-away lanyard strap of some kind. Paracord will hang or choke the wearer under the right circumstances.

The Xtreme's have what appears to be a black linen micarta. Almost a dark grey in color. I hope this helps.

I have heard that sanding or grinding micarta is very dangerous without the proper equipment to protect your lungs, so a little safety plug here might be in order..... No, I'm not a lawyer! :D

Micarta gives off fumes while grinding, you need a resporator filter designed to filter organic compounds. That's supposed to take care of the formaldahyde micarta gives off.

You will need cartridges that are rated for "organic vapor", AND "formaldehyde". Micarta gives off both phenol, and formaldehyde gases. The phenol is handled by the organic vapor part, but the formaldehyde requires extra protection, hence a dual rated cartridge.

As far as the dust not being dangerous, I beg to differ, but I got it straight from a dept of health toxic materials guy in Californis some years ago that it WILL absorb through the skin, especially if you are sweating. I placed that call after coming down from a micarta induced bout of serious high blood pressure, and rage. It was so bad that I spent 8-10 hours laying in bed and grinding my teeth before it wore off.

When I became more rational, I called the health dept., and finally got ahold of this guy. He told me that exposure to phenolic resin gases can produce reactions that are much like the drug "PCP". A super adrenalin flow that can last hours, and result in sensitivity to chemicals(me) etc.

Powells85,

That $20 is starting to look like a better deal after all. Thanks for the heads up. Mac

If you planned on doing more in the future then a small investment isn't bad or if you wanted a different color then the Extreme handles, but I think for most the $20 is worth it.

Working with the stuff outside would reduce the worries of the gases more, but one of the makers who posted in a thread said he had a fan from his shop blowing it outside and he had no grass growing where any of the dust had fallen. Something to think about for anyone with pets/kids
