Micarta handles for Becker?

Got my micarta scales today. :D They look great on the black BK-7. I'll try and post pics later tonight if I can. One thing I wanted to mention is that the original bolts and nuts from the BK-7 work fine with the micarta scales. I think someone had mentioned that you would need to buy new ones, but the originals work just fine!

Its nice to see the big negative for Becker blades is now fixed.

Should of happened 5 years ago but we will take it.

Hey Soup, is the grip narrowed with the new scales? I havn't ordered mine yet, I keep forgetting. Too much else going on.

Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap. Did someone mention pics? :D

Soup glad to hear yours arrived. hopefully mine aren't far behind. I am pleased to hear the original bolts fit. I plan on mounting mine on a BK10 which I haven't purchased yet. I had one up until a year ago, I gave it to my son because I was not pleased with the handles. That should be fixed shortly with the arrival of the new handles.

Yes, the micarta scales are slightly more narrow than the originals. The micarta scales are also flat. They don't have the raised rounded contours that the originals have. It reels really good in the hand. My fingers wrap around and engage the grooved detail work in the scales. I figured the detail work mainly served as giving the scales a nice look but they really do improve the grip. My in-laws have my digital camera so it may be tomorrow before I can get some pics up on my website. Man it looks and feels really good. You guys won't be disappointed. I'm only out 60 bucks for what I now have. I'll abuse this thing and if it breaks i'll just slap these new scalse on another BK-7. :D

Hmmm, I wonder if they sell the black sheath on the side too. :D

I was thinking the same thing! I have mine in a Spec-ops survival sheath, but it would look really nice in a solid black sheath!

Dang, I ordered the grips from camillus, using our debit card, because we don't believe in credit cards and 30 minutes later our bank calls and asks if either one of us is in Albania, because someone was trying to withdraw 150.00 from our account. So, of course they probably declined the purchase.

I guess it just goes to show, to each his own. I've read threads for a long time about the Becker handles and almost ordered a set of these replacement one's for a Crewman that I have on the way. However, I decided to go to the AG Russell store down the street to handle them first. I loved the handles on the BK7, which I think are the same as the Crewman, but the ones on the Becker extreme, which I think is the same as the replacement grips just didn't feel right to me. I have small hands and the originals felt great. The others seem to have too many sharp angles that didn't feel right. Now on the other hand, I haven't gotten a chance to use my Crewman yet so actual use may tell a different story.

Longbow the sheath on the BK77 is just another model put out by specops. Just check with any spec ops dealer and they should be able to set you up with one. I think it may be called the operator?

My handles arrived today. Go figure... I ordered mine at the same time as everyone else. I have a question, the micarta looks "dry" is there something you can wipe them down with to add a little color back? I am also concerned they will absorb anything I may have on my hands when I am using the blade.

Thanks

Mine also seemed somewhat dry. They seemed very smoothe compared to other micarta scales I've handled. Out of curisity I got mine wet with water. All I can say is they sure do stick to the hand when they are wet. I was very surprised how tacky they were with the water on them. They did absorb the water very quickly so I'm assuming other liquids would probably absorb as well.

Hmm, not a good thing that they would absorb moisture or anything else for that matter. Might be a good idea to research and see what they can be coated with to protect and enhance them, without making them slick or changing the composition of the material, because whatever is used, will probably be absorbed.

Dang, now I'm sorry I even posted it to the board. :foot:

Posted my concerns over on KF and here is the response I received;

Brad is correct. Micarta does not really absorb anything except the surface will darken from any petrolium product or skin oil. The Becker handles are not polished. They are left with an open grain surface. I would guess that it is a 400 grit finish.

They may change color but they will not be damaged in any way by anything you put on the surface.

Mike......................

No worries guys. Beckers were designed to be used so go for it. Any darkening from your hand oils will just add character. Longbow i am glad you posted their availability. The new handles solved the only drawback I had with beckers.

Ok, my faith in mankind has been restored. ;) Now if my darn card would get here, I can order a set.

I just found out that armorall will also darken and even the color. The drawback is it will have to be reapplied periodicaly. Good luck on your card. I am awaiting my second crewman to arrive. My son refused to part with his.

Soap and water and some light scrubbing brings back stained micarta to new.

Don't forget to sand it down to a custom grip fit just for you.

Micarta is a sweet material.

Just remember to sand it outside, away from anyone, with the proper mask. Micarta dust is *very* bad for you and your lungs.
